cpm: A python library for theory-driven modelling in computational psychiatry.

The Computational Psychiatry Modelling (cpm) toolbox is a Python library for theory-driven modelling in computational psychiatry and cogniti … ers a wide range of problems (such as risky decision-making, reward/punishment learning, perceptual metacognition), models (including those based on associative, reinforcement learning, and signal detection theories), and methods (such as hierarchical parameter estimation using empirical and variational Bayesian techniques). Such a customisable toolbox aims to …

Effective connectivity of the anterior hippocampus predicts recollection confidence during natural memory retrieval.

Human interactions with the world are influenced by memories of recent events. This effect, often triggered by perceptual cues, occurs natur … Our study reveals network mechanisms of dynamic, involuntary memory retrieval and its relevance to metacognition in a rich context resembling everyday life.

Deficits in the ability to recognize one's own affects and those of others: associations with neurocognition, symptoms and sexual trauma among persons with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

While many with schizophrenia experience deficits in metacognition it is unclear whether those deficits are related to other features of illness. To explore this issue, the current study classified participants with schizophrenia as possessing a deficit in both awareness of their own emotions and those of others (n=30), aware of their own emotions but unaware of the emotions of others (n=50) and aware of their own emotions and of other's emotions (n=17). Groups were compared on assessments of neurocognitive function, symptoms, and history of sexual trauma. ANCOVA controlling for education foun…

Construct and criterion validity of the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) in children referred for neuropsychological assessment after paediatric traumatic brain injury.

The construct and criterion validities of the parent version of the Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) were evaluated in a sample of 100 6- to 16-year-old children with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Maximum-likelihood factor analysis identified two latent constructs that largely replicated the factor structure reported for the standardization sample, with the notable exception that the Inhibit scale covaried primarily with the metacognition factor and not with behavioural regulation factor. Only the former factor demonstrated evidence for sensitivity to the severity of TB…

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Puzzles and Prospects.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a severe and disabling psychiatric disorder that presents several challenges for neuroscience. Recent advances in its genetic and developmental causation, as well as its neuropsychological basis, are reviewed. Hypotheses concerning an imbalance between goal-directed and habitual behavior together with neural correlates in cortico-striatal circuitry are evaluated and contrasted with metacognitive theories. Treatments for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) tend to be of mixed efficacy but include psychological, pharmacological, and surgical approaches, the under

Evaluating the Educational Impact of an Image-Based Assessment Tool in a Gross Anatomy Laboratory Course: A Thematic and Quantitative Analysis of Student Experiences.

BACKGROUND: Learning anatomy remains challenging due to complex terminology, intricate 3D relationships, and the extensive amount of material students must master. While dissection laboratories provide valuable tactile and spatial learning, they often lack structured mechanisms to foster independent preparation and reflective consolidation. The Image-Based Assessment Tool was designed as a structured, student-centered adjunct to facilitate pre- and post-laboratory experience. METHODS: This mixed-methods study employed quantitative paired-sample analyses and qualitative thematic analysis to ex

Reality testing and auditory hallucinations: a signal detection analysis.

The hypothesis that hallucinators are deficient in the metacognitive skill of reality testing was tested using the methodology of signal detection theory. In Expt 1 undergraduate subjects scoring high or low on a scale measuring predisposition to hallucination were tested on an auditory signal detection task. High scorers on the scale were found to differ from low scorers on a measure of perceptual bias but not on a measure of sensitivity. In Expt 2 a similar methodology was used with hallucinating and non-hallucinating schizophrenic patients, with similar results. These results support the hy

The critical-thinking paradox in generative AI-integrated learning: distinguishing efficiency from cognitive depth-a differentiated framework and testable propositions.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has rapidly entered educational settings, yet a fundamental question remains unresolved: does GenAI enhance learning or does it improve immediate performance while reducing the cognitive activity on which durable learning depends? This Hypothesis and Theory article offers a theoretical reading of apparently contradictory findings-improved academic products alongside qualitative, neuroscientific, and behavioral signs of reduced cognitive engagement-which we term the critical-thinking paradox of GenAI-integrated learning. These contrasts may also reflec

Selective interoception impairments and treatment effects in borderline personality disorder.

Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) suffer from severe emotional dysregulation and disturbances in body image and self-perception. Interoception, the processing and perception of internal body signals, is closely linked to emotional processing, but it remains unclear whether BPD impairs specific interoceptive facets and how these deficits respond to treatment. We investigated two key interoceptive facets, accuracy and attention, in BPD patients and healthy controls (HC) using self-report and objective measures before (nBPD=55,nHC = 31) and after (nBPD=37,nHC = 31) four-week res

The balanced mind: the variability of task-unrelated thoughts predicts error monitoring.

Self-generated thoughts unrelated to ongoing activities, also known as "mind-wandering," make up a substantial portion of our daily lives. Reports of such task-unrelated thoughts (TUTs) predict both poor performance on demanding cognitive tasks and blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) activity in the default mode network (DMN). However, recent findings suggest that TUTs and the DMN can also facilitate metacognitive abilities and related behaviors. To further understand these relationships, we examined the influence of subjective intensity, ruminative quality, and variability of mind-wandering o

Does childhood emotional abuse moderate the effect of cognitive behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy versus meta-cognitive therapy in depression? A propensity score analysis on an observational study.

Background Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP) and Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) are effective for depression. CBASP might offer most benefit in patients reporting childhood emotional abuse (CEA). This needs to be confirmed in real-world settings and in comparisons with depression-specific psychotherapies. This study examines the moderating influence of CEA on the effectiveness of CBASP versus MCT. Methods In this observational study, we recruited patients treated with either CBASP or MCT in an intensive day treatment program for depression. CEA was assessed using the C

Obsessive-compulsive tendencies predict seeking proxies for understanding.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Seeking Proxies for Internal States (SPIS) model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) postulates that obsessive-compulsive (OC) individuals have reduced access to their internal states and must therefore seek and rely on external proxies for these states. The present study extended this hypothesis to the feeling of understanding, which had not been examined previously in relation to OCD. METHODS: We presented 148 participants with a computerized task requiring them to read and understand a text on medieval architecture. Participants were randomly assigned to a

Beyond the Prompt: Leveraging Generative AI and Tanner's Model to Decode Clinical Logic in Undergraduate Nursing.

BACKGROUND: Transitioning from theory to clinical practice is a persistent hurdle in undergraduate nursing programs, largely because traditi … algorithm moves students away from rote memorization and toward spatial-logical mapping, promoting metacognition, and transitioning students from linear thinking to complex pattern recognition. CONCLUSIONS: When used as a scaffolded, iterative tool, GenAI enhances clinical synthesis and prepares students for the "chaos of the floor."

Counterfactual thinking and posttraumatic stress reactions.

Preoccupation with alternative outcomes (counterfactual thinking) is a central component of the ruminations of trauma victims. The questions investigated were whether such thinking should be distinguished from general rumination and whether elements of counterfactual thinking might relate to the process of adjustment. A sample of assault victims was interviewed. They completed a battery of self-report scales and thought-listing procedures. Frequency of counterfactual thinking was closely associated with continuing levels of posttraumatic distress. However, high availability of counterfactuals
