Methanol intoxication-induced nigrostriatal dysfunction detected using 6-[18F]fluoro-L-dopa PET.

Ingestion of windshield washer liquid resulted with an acute severe methanol intoxication in a 49-year old man. He developed optic atrophy with blindness, and an extrapyramidal syndrome. Putaminal injury and hyperintensity in the subcortical white matter was seen in a brain MRI. PET scanning with 6-[18F]fluoro-L-dopa confirmed symmetrical impaired presynaptic dopaminergic activity in the striatum, indicative of functional impairment of dopaminergic nigrostriatal neurons. The striatal uptake was more markedly impaired in the putamina (40% of controls) than in the caudate nuclei (60% of controls…

Iron-oxide-modified nanosized diamond: preparation, characterization, and catalytic properties in methanol decomposition.

Nanosized diamond (UDD), obtained by a detonation procedure, was modified with iron from the corresponding acetylacetonate precursor under various pretreatment conditions. Nitrogen physisorption, X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction, and FTIR and Mössbauer spectroscopy were used for their characterization. The samples' catalytic behavior in methanol decomposition was also studied. The physicochemical and catalytic properties of the obtained materials (Fe/UDD) were compared with those of other iron-oxide-modified mesoporous supports with different nature and functionality (MCM-48…

Progressive parkinsonism in a young experimental physicist following long-term exposure to methanol.

A case is described of an experimental physicist who developed parkinsonism, apparently as delayed toxic effect of long exposure to vapors of methanol in the laboratory. Clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) supported the diagnosis, after exclusion of hereditary diseases and primary degenerative diseases. Screening for heavy metals in urine and plasma ceruloplasmin was negative. This case illustrates the neurotoxic delayed effect of long-term exposure to methanol with no episodes of acute intoxication. The setting of a research laboratory with prolonged exposure to mixed single crystal…

Acute methanol intoxication generates free radicals in rats: an ESR spin trapping investigation.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy has been used to investigate free radical generation in rats with acute methanol poisoning. The spin trapping technique was used where a spin trapping agent, alpha-(4-pyridyl 1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (POBN), reacted with the corresponding alcohol-derived or alcohol-dependent radical to form radical adducts. One radical adduct was detected in both bile and urine samples 2 h after acute methanol poisoning in male Sprague Dawley rats. The hyperfine coupling constants for the radical adduct from [(13)C]-labeled methanol detected in the bile were a(N) …

Methanol-induced contraction of canine cerebral artery and its possible mechanism of action.

In the present report, we investigated the effects of methanol on canine basilar cerebral arterial rings. Our data indicate that acute methanol exposure (5-675 mM) induces potent contractile responses of cerebral arteries in a concentration-dependent manner. Pharmacological antagonists, such as propranolol, phentolamine, haloperidol, methysergide, naloxone, diphenhydramine, and cimetidine, did not exert any effects on these methanol-induced contractions. Likewise, a potent antagonist of cyclo-oxygenase, and subsequent synthesis of prostanoids (i.e., indomethacin), failed to exert any effect on…

Toxicity to rats of methanol-fueled engine exhaust inhaled continuously for 28 days.

Fischer 344 rats were exposed to three concentrations of exhaust generated by an M85 methanol-fueled engine (methanol with 15% gasoline) without catalyst for 8 h/d, 7 d/wk for 7, 14, 21, or 28 d. Concentration- and time-dependent yellowing of the fur was prominent in all treated groups. Concentration-dependent increases in the erythrocyte count, hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, formaldehyde in plasma, and carboxyhemoglobin in the erythrocytes, and decrease in serum alkaline phosphatase activity were seen after all exposure periods. Histopathologically, lesions were found in the nasal cavi…

Methanol and ethylene glycol poisonings. Mechanism of toxicity, clinical course, diagnosis and treatment.

Methanol and ethylene glycol poisonings share many characteristics both clinically and biochemically. Both alcohols are metabolised via alcohol dehydrogenase to their toxic metabolites. Methanol is slowly metabolised to formaldehyde which is rapidly metabolised to formate, the metabolite mainly responsible for methanol toxicity. Formate metabolism depends upon the folate pool which is small in primates compared with other animals. Therefore, formate accumulates in primates during methanol intoxication and is mainly responsible for the metabolic acidosis in the early stage of intoxication. In l…

A Molecular Simulation Study for Understanding the Effects of Two Water Channel Morphologies in Nafion with Various Hydration Levels on Adsorption and Nonideal Behaviour of Methanol at Operating Conditions of Direct Methanol Fuel Cells.

Fuel loss inside direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) having Nafion membranes with two distinct water channel morphologies (viz., lamellar water channel morphology (LWCM) and random water channel morphology (RWCM), both validated against the literature having comparable equivalent weights and membrane densities) has been quantified through a methanol adsorption (ρCH3OH) study using GCMC simulations. Subsequently, variations in nonideality of adsorbed methanol as a function of Nafion-water-methanol local mole fractions are estimated at DMFC operating conditions, which are governed by ρCH3OH insid…

Electrochemical CO2 reduction to methanol over Ni@Ti3CN MXene: a first-principles DFT study.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction is a promising solution for the conversion of CO2 to CH3OH. In this study, we investigated the catalytic activity of nickel-decorated Ti3CN (Ni@Ti3CN) using density functional theory combined with a computational hydrogen electrode (CHE) model. This study was completely carried out using an implicit solvation model to understand the impact of the solvent on the production of CH3OH via electrochemical CO2 reduction. Using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), Ni@Ti3CN was found to be thermally stable at T = 300 K. The catalyst activated CO2 in the s

Cobalt Phthalocyanine Axially Coordinated with Carbon Nanotubes for Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction into Methanol.

The electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to methanol (MeOH) in aqueous media represents a key pathway toward achieving sustainable carbon recycling and utilization, particularly in the context of carbon neutrality goals. Cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc), a well-established molecular catalyst with tunable active sites, has been investigated for CO2-to-MeOH conversion. However, its efficiency for methanol production is often limited by facile desorption of the critical *CO intermediate. Herein, we report a molecular electrocatalyst featuring CoPc axially coordinated with hydroxyl-functionalized carbon…

High-Entropy Spinel Oxides-Decorated MXene Nanoarchitectures for Efficient Methanol Oxidation-Assisted Hydrogen Production.

The substitution of methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) for conventional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis systems presents a promising strategy to enhance hydrogen production efficiency. Herein, we demonstrate this concept through the rational design of high-entropy spinel oxide-decorated Ti3C2Tx MXene (HEO/MX) nanoarchitectures that simultaneously catalyze both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and selective methanol-to-formate conversion. The well-dispersive high-entropy spinel oxides afford numerous catalytically active centers as well as multiple electronic hybridization…

Mainstream modification strategies for improving Au-based catalysts towards photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

Photocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation to methanol (CHM) can directly convert solar energy into the high-value-added product methanol (CH3OH) through a green chemistry method, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly route to solve the energy crisis and thus contributing to carbon neutrality. Among the various photocatalytic platforms, Au-based catalysts have shown great potential in photocatalytic CHM due to their unique electronic, optical, and catalytic properties. However, Au nanoparticles (NPs) often suffer from various drawbacks in Au-based CHM systems. Some dominant strategies incl…

Efficient methanol upcycling to ethylene glycol and glycolaldehyde via divergent C-C coupling synthesis.

Direct photocatalytic conversion of methanol into high-value multi-carbon chemicals through precisely controlled C - C coupling represents an extremely appealing but challenging goal. Herein, we demonstrate the efficient photoredox-driven dehydrocoupling of methanol into divergent synthesis of ethylene glycol and glycolaldehyde concomitantly with H2 production by structural regulation of atomically dispersed Ni species. We showcase distinctly different reaction pathway for divergent C - C coupling of methanol over two types of atomically dispersed Ni cocatalyst-decorated SiO quantum dots, name…

Isolated and H2-reduced Anderson clusters catalyse low-temperature hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol.

CO2 hydrogenation, especially to methanol, is crucial to establishing sustainable closed-loop systems for carbon utilization. However, the difficulties of CO2 activation at low temperatures and the ambiguity of structure-activity correlations are obstacles to reducing the energy consumption of the hydrogenation process. Here we report that molecularly defined Anderson PtMo6O24 clusters, sited within a robust metal-organic framework, are catalytic for low-temperature CO2 hydrogenation. The performance of the cluster showed no signs of decay in either its activity or methanol selectivity over 3,…

Methanol-driven esterification of volatile short-chain fatty acids in thermal desorption-based analysis.

Breath volatile organic compound analysis can non-invasively detect diseases, with short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) identified as key biomarkers. However, SCFA quantification is technically challenging due to chemical instability during thermal desorption (TD) tube analysis. Esterification with methanol may cause methyl ester formation, which impairs diagnostic sensitivity and reproducibility. We hypothesised that methanol-driven esterification of SCFAs is temperature- and time-dependent and can occur under common solvent handling and storage conditions used in TD-based analysis, even without t…

Dynamic CO Electrolysis to Methanol on Pt(111) Surfaces Modified with a Pd Monolayer.

In this study, we focus on improving the activity of electrochemical carbon monoxide (CO) reduction toward methanol (CH3OH) on a model catalyst reported previously by our group: a platinum(111) single crystal modified with a palladium monolayer (PdML/Pt-(111)). Dynamic electrolysis with a square potential wave was applied at a negative potential of -0.8 V for CO, while the (more) positive potential was varied between -0.2 V and +0.8 V vs the Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE) for different negative and positive pulse durations. We find a 7-fold increase (compared to static electrolysis) in Fa…

CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol on Core-Shell-Structured SiO2-Encapsulated Cu-ZnO-In2O3 Nanoparticles.

Since Cu-ZnO-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol are generally suffered from thermal aggregations of Cu nanoparticles under an excess water environment, SiO2-encapsulated Cu-ZnO-based nanoparticles with multicore-shell structures were applied in this study. The synergistic effects of In2O3 on the Cu-ZnO surfaces and protective SiO2 overlayers were verified to explain the positive contributions of In2O3 with decreased CO selectivity and an increased methanol selectivity above 80%, which were attributed to the prohibited competitive reverse water-gas shift reaction activity and les…
