Palatal Motion After Primary and Secondary Furlow Palatoplasty.

IMPORTANCE: Indications for Furlow palatoplasty include primary repair of cleft palate as well as secondary repair, or secondary palatoplasty for treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency. Speculation exists surrounding the benefit of secondary Furlow palatoplasty in cases of a previously well-reconstructed palate or a short but otherwise anatomically normal soft palate because it has been theorized that reorientation of a previously reconstructed or normal muscular levator sling should in fact worsen palatal motion. OBJECTIVE: To compare palatal motion following primary and secondary Furlow …

Vestibular Derangement and Motion Intolerance in VATER Association.

VATER association is a nonrandom occurrence of congenital malformations: vertebral defects, anal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal defects, and radial bone anomalies. We report the case of a 19-year-old man with a childhood diagnosis of VATER association, who presented to the motion sickness clinic with severe seasickness. We discuss the clinical and laboratory diagnosis of vestibular pathophysiology, which was confirmed by MRI of lateral semicircular canal and vestibule dysplasia. We suggest the possibility of vestibular involvement as part of the developmental field defect associated…

Biomechanics of Lumbar Motion-Segments in Dynamic Compression.

Recent epidemiology studies have reported increase in lumbar spine injuries in frontal crashes. Whole human body finite element models (FEHBM) are frequently used to delineate mechanisms of such injuries. However, the accuracy of these models in mimicking the response of human spine relies on the characterization data of the spine model. The current study set out to generate characterization data that can be input to FEHBM lumbar spine, to obtain biofidelic responses from the models. Twenty-five lumbar functional spinal units were tested under compressive loading. A hydraulic testing machine w

Subjective Vertical Conflict Theory and Space Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Space motion sickness (SMS) remains a troublesome problem during spaceflight. The subjective vertical (SV) conflict theory postulates that all motion sickness provoking situations are characterized by a condition in which the SV sensed from gravity and visual and idiotropic cues differs from the expected vertical. This theory has been successfully used to predict motion sickness in different vehicles on Earth. METHOD: We have summarized the most outstanding and recent studies on the illusions and characteristics associated with spatial disorientation and SMS during weightlessness,…

Nomenclature proposal to describe vocal fold motion impairment.

The terms used to describe vocal fold motion impairment are confusing and not standardized. This results in a failure to communicate accurately and to major limitations of interpreting research studies involving vocal fold impairment. We propose standard nomenclature for reporting vocal fold impairment. Overarching terms of vocal fold immobility and hypomobility are rigorously defined. This includes assessment techniques and inclusion and exclusion criteria for determining vocal fold immobility and hypomobility. In addition, criteria for use of the following terms have been outlined in detail:…

Asymmetric global motion integration in drifting Gabor arrays.

We examined how ambiguous motion signals are integrated over space to support the unambiguous perception of global motion. The motion of a Gaussian windowed drifting sine grating (Gabor) is consistent with an infinite number of grating velocities. To extract the consistent global motion of multi-Gabor arrays, the visual system must integrate ambiguous motion signals from disparate regions of visual space. We found an interaction between spatial arrangement and global motion integration in this process. Linear arrays of variably oriented Gabor elements appeared to move more slowly, reflecting s…

Perception: a motion after-effect for voluntary actions.

After viewing directional motion for a period of time, we experience a motion after-effect in which a subsequent stationary object appears to move in the opposite direction. A recent study demonstrates a novel motion after-effect that depends on the movement of the hand.

Interactions between cues to visual motion in depth.

Information about the motion in depth of an object along the midline of a stationary observer is provided by changes in image size (looming), changes in vergence produced by changes in binocular disparity of the images of the object, and changes in relative disparity between the moving object and a stationary object. Each of these cues was independently varied in the dichoptiscope, which is described in Howard, Fukuda, and Allison (2013). The stimuli were a small central dot and a textured surface moving to and fro in depth along the midline. Observers tracked the motion with the unseen hand. …

Boundary segmentation from dynamic occlusion-based motion parallax.

Active observer movement results in retinal image motion that is highly dependent on the scene layout. This retinal motion, often called motion parallax, can yield significant information about the boundaries between objects and their relative depth differences. Previously we examined segmentation from shear-based motion parallax, which consists of only relative motion information. Here, we examine segmentation from dynamic occlusion-based motion parallax, which contains both relative motion and accretion-deletion. We utilized random dots whose motion was modulated with vertical low spatial fr…

Effect of respiratory motion on internal radiation dosimetry.

PURPOSE: Estimation of the radiation dose to internal organs is essential for the assessment of radiation risks and benefits to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures including PET. Respiratory motion induces notable internal organ displacement, which influences the absorbed dose for external exposure to radiation. However, to their knowledge, the effect of respiratory motion on internal radiation dosimetry has never been reported before. METHODS: Thirteen computational models representing the adult male at different respiratory phases corresponding to the …

Options for assessing and measuring chest wall motion.

Assessing chest wall motion is a basic and vital component in managing the child with respiratory problems, whether these are due to pathology in the lungs, airways, chest wall or muscles. Since the 1960s, clinical assessment has been supplemented with an ever-growing range of technological options for measuring chest wall motion, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. Measurements of chest wall motion can be used to: (1) Assess respiratory airflow and volume change, as a non-invasive alternative to measurement at the airway opening, (2) Monitor breathing over long periods of time, to …

Three-dimensional rodent motion analysis and neurodegenerative disorders.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis is established in investigating, human pathological motion. In the field of gait, its use results in the objective identification of primary, and secondary causes of deviations, many current interventions are the result of pre- and post-testing, and it was shown recently that it can result in decreased number of surgeries and overall cost of care. Consequently, recent attempts have implemented 3D motion analysis using rat models to study, parkinsonism. However, to-date, a 3D user friendly analytical approach using rodent models to, identify et…

Motion-dependent representation of space in area MT+.

How is visual space represented in cortical area MT+? At a relatively coarse scale, the organization of MT+ is debated; retinotopic, spatiotopic, or mixed representations have all been proposed. However, none of these representations entirely explain the perceptual localization of objects at a fine spatial scale--a scale relevant for tasks like navigating or manipulating objects. For example, perceived positions of objects are strongly modulated by visual motion; stationary flashes appear shifted in the direction of nearby motion. Does spatial coding in MT+ reflect these shifts in perceived po…

Analyzing locomotion synthesis with feature-based motion graphs.

We propose feature-based motion graphs for realistic locomotion synthesis among obstacles. Among several advantages, feature-based motion graphs achieve improved results in search queries, eliminate the need of postprocessing for foot skating removal, and reduce the computational requirements in comparison to traditional motion graphs. Our contributions are threefold. First, we show that choosing transitions based on relevant features significantly reduces graph construction time and leads to improved search performances. Second, we employ a fast channel search method that confines the motion …

[Systolic anterior motion: a report of two cases].

Systolic anterior motion describes the anterior displacement of one or both mitral valve leaflets, obstructing the outflow tract of the left ventricle. It can be a cause of severe hypotension during the intraoperative and postoperative period of non-cardiac surgery. The diagnosis is made with echocardiography. We report two patients with this problem. The first was a 74-year-old male subjected to an incisional hernia repair who presented severe hypotension in the intraoperative period. A transesophageal echocardiography revealed an anterior displacement of the mitral valve anterior leaflet. Ep…

Magnetoencephalographic signatures of visual form and motion binding.

This study investigates neural magneto-encephalographic (MEG) correlates of visual form and motion binding. Steady-state visual evoked fields (SSVEF) were recorded in MEG while observers reported their bound or unbound perception of moving bars arranged in a square shape. By using pairs of oscillating vertical and horizontal bars, "frequency-tagged" at f1 and f2, we identified a region with enhanced sustained power at 2f1+2f2 intermodulation frequency correlated with perceptual reports. Intermodulation power is more important during perceptual form/motion integration than during the perceptual…
