Motion-induced sickness following bilateral ablation of area postrema in squirrel monkeys.

Using squirrel monkeys as experimental subjects, we reexamined the disputed role of the area postrema (AP) in motion-induced vomiting. After … cs were modified following ablation of AP, its function is not indispensible for the development of motion sickness in horizontally-rotated squirrel monkeys.

[Study of the flight work capacity of pilots during simulated motion sickness].

With the aid of a modified procedure of reading instrumental indications of an aircraft the professional performance of pilots was studied during simulated motion sickness. A ball system was developed to assess the results of reading the instrumental indications. After five exposures to double rotation statokinetically stable pilots developed a latent form and statokinetically unstable pilots developed an overt form of motion sickness. The latent form of motion sickness manifested itself in deteriorated professional performance. The overt form of motion sickness was preceded by a decline of pr…

Electrospun PLA/PVP K90 Biphasic-Release Sublingual Film for Motion Sickness Treatment.

To overcome the limitations of traditional motion sickness medications-slow onset of action, short duration of efficacy, and poor patient compliance-this study employed coaxial electrospinning technology. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone K90 (PVP K90) were used as composite carrier materials. The sheath layer is composed of highly hydrophilic PVP K90, loaded with the antihistamine diphenhydramine (DPH). The core layer, composed of biodegradable PLA with excellent sustained-release properties, carries the anticholinergic drug scopolamine hydrobromide (SH). This core-sheath nanos…

Frequency Shaping-Based Control Framework for Reducing Motion Sickness in Autonomous Vehicles.

This study introduces a motion-sickness-reducing control strategy aimed at enhancing ride comfort in Electric Autonomous Vehicles (EAVs). For lateral control, the forward look-ahead distance was adaptively adjusted based on the Motion Sickness Dose Value (MSDV) analysis from ISO 2631-1, effectively mitigating lateral acceleration and its motion-sickness-related frequency components, leading to a reduced MSDV. For longitudinal control, Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) optimal control was applied to minimize acceleration, complemented by a band-stop filter specifically designed to attenuate moti…

Vestibular neurons link motion sickness, behavioural thermoregulation and metabolic balance in mice.

Motion sickness is associated with thermoregulation and metabolic control, but the underlying neural circuitry remains largely unknown. Here we show that neurons in the medial vestibular nuclei parvocellular part (MVePC) mediate the hypothermic responses induced by motion. Reactivation of motion-sensitive MVePC neurons recapitulates motion sickness in mice. We show that motion-activated neurons in the MVePC are glutamatergic (MVePCGlu), and that optogenetic stimulation of MVePCGlu neurons mimics motion-induced hypothermia by signalling to the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN). Acute inhibiti…

Personalizing motion sickness models: estimation and statistical modeling of individual-specific parameters.

As users transition from drivers to passengers in automated vehicles, they often take their eyes off the road to engage in non-driving activities. In driving simulators, visual motion is presented with scaled or without physical motion, leading to a mismatch between expected and perceived motion. Both conditions elicit motion sickness, calling for enhanced vehicle and simulator motion control strategies. Given the large differences in sickness susceptibility between individuals, effective countermeasures must address this at a personal level. This paper combines a group-averaged sensory confli…

Promethazine Effects on Motion Sickness During Altered Gravity Induced by Parabolic Flight.

INTRODUCTION: Astronauts commonly experience space motion sickness, which can impair astronaut performance and safety. Pharmaceuticals are frequently used to reduce space motion sickness symptoms but have not been extensively studied in partial gravity. In this research effort, we investigated the impact of oral promethazine on motion sickness during parabolic flight. METHODS: We collected motion sickness scores from 12 subjects (6 women) during parabolic flight. Each subject participated in two flights-one 0-G flight and one partial g flight-experiencing 10 parabolas at 0 g, 0.25 g, 0.50 g, …

Evaluation of a Bone Conducted Vibration Device Designed for Motion Sickness Mitigation.

INTRODUCTION: Historical and modern science has produced many remedies for motion sickness; however, few if any of these remedies have demonstrated successful mitigation without producing negative side effects. The purpose of this study was to determine if a newly created commercial bone conducted vibration (BCV) device could reduce motion sickness symptoms in a simulated visual and provocative motion flight environment. METHODS: Subjects (N = 12) passively experienced two 30-min, auto-pilot simulated flights in a motion-based simulator while wearing a BCV device during experimental or placeb…

Exploring Eye Movement Features of Motion Sickness Using Closed-Track Driving Experiments.

ObjectiveTo explore and validate effective eye movement features related to motion sickness (MS) through closed-track experiments and to provide valuable insights for practical applications.BackgroundWith the development of autonomous vehicles (AVs), MS has attracted more and more attention. Eye movements have great potential to evaluate the severity of MS as an objective quantitative indicator of vestibular function. Eye movement signals can be easily and noninvasively collected using a camera, which will not cause discomfort or disturbance to passengers, thus making it highly applicable.Meth…

How feelings of unpleasantness develop during the progression of motion sickness symptoms.

To mitigate motion sickness in self-driving cars and virtual reality, one should be able to quantify its progression unambiguously. Self-report rating scales either focus on general feelings of unpleasantness or specific symptomatology. Although one generally feels worse as symptoms progress, there is anecdotal evidence suggesting a non-monotonic relationship between unpleasantness and symptomatology. This implies that individuals could (temporarily) feel better as symptoms progress, which could trouble an unambiguous measurement of motion sickness progression. Here we explicitly investigated …

A Pilot Study on EEG-Based Evaluation of Visually Induced Motion Sickness.

The most prominent problem in virtual reality (VR) technology is that users may experience motion sickness-like symptoms when they immerse into a VR environment. These symptoms are recognized as visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) or virtual reality motion sickness (VRMS). The objectives of this study were to investigate the association between the electroencephalogram (EEG) and subjectively rated VIMS level (VIMSL) and find the EEG markers for VIMS evaluation. In this study, a VR-based vehicle-driving simulator (VDS) was used to induce VIMS symptoms, and a wearable EEG device with four el…

Motion sickness in automated vehicles with forward and rearward facing seating orientations.

Automated vehicles (AV's) offer greater flexibility in cabin design particularly in a future where no physical driving controls are required. One common concept for an automated vehicle is to have both forward and rearward facing seats. However, traveling backwards could lead to an increased likelihood of experiencing motion sickness due to the inability of occupants to anticipate the future motion trajectory. This study aimed to empirically evaluate the impact of seating orientation on the levels of motion sickness within an AV cabin. To this end, a vehicle was modified to replicate the commo…
