Patterns of musculoskeletal pain in the population: a latent class analysis using a nationally representative interviewer-based survey of 4817 Danes.

BACKGROUND: Pain from the musculoskeletal system often occurs in more than one site. This appears to affect prognosis negatively. Knowledge about specific pain patterns is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To define specific patterns of musculoskeletal co-complaints occurring alongside a primary musculoskeletal complaint. METHODS: Using data from an interview-based health survey of a nationally representative sample of the adult Danish population in 1991 (n = 4817), we describe the co-occurrence of musculoskeletal complaints. Using latent class analysis, we identify clusters of musculoskeletal complaints…

Musculoskeletal and Rheumatic Diseases Induced by Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors: A Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors are a new promising class of antitumor drugs that have been associated with a number of immune-related Adverse Events (AEs), including musculoskeletal and rheumatic disease. METHODS: We searched Medline reviewing reports of musculoskeletal and rheumatic AEs induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors. RESULTS: Several musculoskeletal and rheumatic AEs associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors treatment are reported in the literature. In particular, arthralgia and myalgia were the most common reported AEs, whereas the prevalence of arthritis, myositis a

Musculoskeletal health and frailty.

Frailty is a consequence of advanced aging, where the frailty phenotype tries to capture overall decline in health. Frailty involves multiple physiological systems that are intrinsically inter-related and with highly complex interactions. Frailty is closely linked to musculoskeletal health; musculoskeletal functioning is a key component in quantifying frailty, while at the same time, frailty is associated with the most common age-related musculoskeletal conditions: osteoporosis, fractures, falls, osteoarthritis, and spinal conditions. Beyond that, frailty includes additional physical domains s

Musculoskeletal chest wall pain.

BACKGROUND: Chest pain is a common general practice presentation that requires careful diagnostic assessment because of its diverse and potentially serious causes. OBJECTIVE: This article describes the causes, assessment and differential diagnosis of musculoskeletal chest wall pain, and the management of its most common causes. DISCUSSION: It is critical to rule out non-musculoskeletal causes of chest pain, particularly those requiring urgent intervention such as ischaemic heart disease. However, once this has been done, most musculoskeletal diagnoses can be made from a thorough history and

Evidence of a distinct peripheral inflammatory profile in sport-related concussion.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is considered a hallmark of concussion pathophysiology in experimental models, yet is understudied in human injury. Despite the growing use of blood biomarkers in concussion, inflammatory biomarkers have not been well characterized. Furthermore, it is unclear if the systemic inflammatory response to concussion differs from that of musculoskeletal injury. The purpose of this paper was to characterize systemic inflammation after injury in athletes with sport-related concussion or musculoskeletal injury. METHODS: A prospective, observational cohort study was conducted em

Developmental patterns of histamine-like immunoreactivity in the mouse.

We studied the appearance and distribution of histamine (HA) during mouse embryogenesis, neonatal period, and adulthood using a specific rabbit HA antiserum and indirect immunofluorescence. HA first appeared on the Embryonic Day 13 (E13) in scattered mast cells in the gastrointestinal (GI) muscularis externa and liver. The splenic primordium contained a dense population of intensely HA-immunoreactive (HA-ir) cells from E13 on. From E15 to the birth, HA was detected in many embryonic cell types. On E15, the first HA-ir epithelial endocrine cells appeared in the oxyntic mucosa. In addition to th

Enhancing MRI efficiency in musculoskeletal examinations: Impact of optimized facility design and workflow optimization efforts.

BACKGROUND: To assess the workflow efficiency of an optimized MRI facility design compared to conventional facilities. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 7,164 non-contrast MRI examinations (3,951 knee, 2,246 shoulder, 967 ankle) performed between January 2021 and April 2024. We compared an optimized facility (OF) featuring three scanners, three dedicated preparation bays, and dockable tables to two reference facilities (RF) with traditional single-scanner/single-table setups. All scans were performed on 3 T scanners. Workflow metrics were extracted from scanner logs and electronic he

Ultrasound in juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: In the recent years, musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) has been regarded as especially promising in the assessment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), as a reliable method to precisely document and monitor the synovial inflammation process. MAIN CONTENT: MSUS is particularly suited for examination of joints in children due to several advantages over other imaging modalities. Some challenges should be considered for correct interpretation of MSUS findings in children, due to the peculiar features of the growing skeleton. MSUS in JIA is considered particularly useful for its abi

Musculoskeletal hydatid disease.

Hydatid disease is an infectious disease caused by the larval stage of the parasitic tapeworm Echinococcosis granulosus. Its distribution is worldwide. Although hydatid disease can develop in almost any part of the body, it is most commonly found in the liver and lung. Musculoskeletal involvement is rare. The radiological appearance of the hydatid disease of musculoskeletal system mimics tumors and other inflammatory conditions. Therefore preoperative diagnosis of musculoskeletal hydatid disease is sometimes difficult clinically and radiologically. On radiography, different radiographic change…

Musculoskeletal manifestations of endocrine disorders.

Endocrine disorders can lead to disturbances in numerous systems within the body, including the musculoskeletal system. Radiological evaluation of these conditions can demonstrate typical appearances of the bones and soft tissues. Knowledge of these patterns can allow the radiologist to suggest a diagnosis that may not be clinically apparent. This review will highlight the typical musculoskeletal findings of acromegaly, hypercortisolism, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, pseudo- and pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism, and diabetes mellitus. The radiological manifestations of ea…

MRI findings of neutrophilic fasciitis in a patient with acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis (Sweet's syndrome).

Acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis (Sweet's syndrome) is a clinical condition that is histopathologically characterized by infiltration of the dermis with mature neutrophils with or without vessel wall destruction. Frequently, an extracutaneous systemic disease can be seen. We report magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of neutrophilic fasciitis in a 62-year-old man with Sweet's syndrome and musculoskeletal involvement. The musculoskeletal system is rarely involved in Sweet's syndrome and, to our knowledge, no previous report of MRI findings of neutrophilic fasciitis with myofascial in…

Computer-aided decision system for the clubfeet deformities.

A computer-aided decision system (CADS) based on ontology in pediatric orthopedics was developed to assess, without assumptions performed, the abnormalities of the musculoskeletal system of lower limbs. The CADS consists of four components. The first component is a diagnosis-based ontology, called Ontologie du Système Musculosquelettique des Membres Inférieurs (OSMMI). The second component is a database for collecting clinical observations, e.g., the birth classification of the clubfeet deformities. The third component uses statistical methods (principal component analysis and decision tree) f…

A Review of Extraintestinal Manifestations and Complications of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) are common in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), in both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Almost any organ system can be affected, including the musculoskeletal, dermatologic, renal, hepatopancreatobiliary, pulmonary and ocular systems. However, the musculoskeletal and dermatologic systems are the most commonly involved sites of manifestations. While some manifestations such as peripheral arthritis and erythema nodosum have an association with IBD activity, others such as axial arthropathy, pyoderma gangrenosum and primary sclerosing cholangitis have

Unusual neonatal presentation of incontinentia pigmenti with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn: a case report.

Incontinentia pigmenti (Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome) is a multisystem disorder with classical changing skin lesions. The other systems that are involved include the central nervous system, eye, hair, teeth, musculoskeletal system and, occasionally, the cardiovascular system. We report a neonate with a diagnosis of incontinentia pigmenti who presented at birth with pulmonary hypertension. This presentation has not been described in the literature.

A diagnostic approach to musculoskeletal pain.

Musculoskeletal pain or inflammation is one of the most common causes of primary care office visits. Musculoskeletal disorders exact a high toll in distress, disability, and direct health care costs. Given the wide range of disorders that may cause or contribute to musculoskeletal symptoms, differential diagnosis is challenging and a systematic approach is necessary. Patient history is the single most valuable source of diagnostic information, followed by a careful physical examination. The history also suggests which laboratory tests and imaging studies, if any, are indicated. The chronology,

Musculoskeletal anatomy education perspectives.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) anatomy education is a critical foundation for developing competency among radiologists, physiatrists, rheumatologists, and orthopedic surgeons. However, current undergraduate medical curricula often exhibit significant deficiencies in instructional hours, integration of diverse teaching modalities, and clinical relevance. This narrative review synthesizes recent evidence (March 2021-March 2026) identified through a targeted search of Medline, Embase, and Scopus, with an emphasis on consensus guidelines, validation studies, and clinically focused publications related to M

Musculoskeletal Injuries in Volleyball Players.

Volleyball is a very popular sport worldwide, and both the indoor and outdoor versions are played at the Olympics. The several different positions have unique associated injuries. Some positions require fast movements and reflexes; others require strength and power. Given the repetitive jumping and shoulder movements, some of the positions are susceptible to chronic overuse injuries. Others are related to landing awkwardly or taking powerful hits/blocks from the ball. Indoor volleyball, played on a firm surface, has more of an impact on players compared with beach volleyball played on sand. Th
