Cutaneous myiasis is an endemic infestation in Latin America and Africa. Many unusual sites of larval infection can cause diagnostic confusion, especially if the patient is not from an endemic area. In the breast, the furuncular aspect suggests some differential diagnosis. We report a case of an 84-year-old patient with an ulcerated lesion on the right breast, who was referred to the reference service to exclude malignancy. Considering the clinical aspects and after further evaluation with imaging methods, she was diagnosed with myiasis. This study reinforces the importance of differential dia…

RATIONALE: Myiasis is a parasitic disease caused by fly larvae of the Diptera order that infest human and other vertebrate animal tissues. Orbital myiasis is a potentially destructive infestation of the orbital tissues, which may affect individuals with previous ocular diseases or disorders of consciousness.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 72-year-old man presented with a complaint of repeated pain for two years after trauma to his right eyelid and aggravated symptoms with larvae wriggling out for 2 days. An orbital computed tomography scan revealed right eyeball protrusion and periocular soft tissue ede…

Urogenital Myiasis is rarely documented in developed countries, so epidemiological data are limited and often associated with travel to endemic regions. We report a Case of urogenital myiasis, unassociated with travel, in a 31 year old male. The patient presented to the emergency department after passing a larval fly during micturition. Pathologic examination of the initial urine sample confirmed the presence of living fly larvae and further evaluation was arranged with the urology department. The patient had no further episodes, and resolution was confirmed via urinalysis and cystoscopy. Seve…

Myiasis is a type of parasitosis caused by the larvae of diptera. It commonly occurs in tropical and subtropical zones. The infestation of nose and ears can be extremely dangerous if the larvae destroy the bone and penetrate into the brain, in which case the fatality rate is reported to be as high as 8%. Here, we report a case of aural myiasis in a patient with congenital mental retardation. Twelve maggots were removed mechanically, and the patient was treated with appropriate antibiotics.

Orbital myiasis is a potentially destructive infestation of the orbital tissues. It is uncommon in clinical practice and is seen in patients with poor hygiene with debilitated or immunocompromised state. We report a case of orbital myiasis in an empty socket of an immunocompetent individual. A 65-year-old immunocompetent patient was found to have orbital myiasis in an empty socket status postevisceration, for which he underwent treatment by manual removal of the larvae after application of a suffocating agent, turpentine oil. A total of 12 larvae were removed over the ensuing week. The tissues…

Only a small number of cases of myiasis have been previously reported in patients with a head and neck malignancy; most of these occurred in patients with primary or metastatic skin cancer. We report a case of massive Lucilia sericata myiasis in the neck of a 57-year-old man with primary squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx and hypopharynx that metastasized to the neck lymph nodes. The neck disease manifested as necrosis and skin involvement. Clinical examination revealed an extensive wound within the neck tumor at levels II and V on the right that was heavily infested with maggot larvae. Rem…

Traumatic myiasis, the parasitic infestation by fly larvae in traumatic lesions of the tissues of living vertebrates, is a serious medical condition in humans and a welfare and economic issue in domestic animals. New molecular studies are providing insights into its evolution and epidemiology. Nevertheless, its incidence in humans is generally underreported, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Myiasis in domestic animals has been studied more extensively, but continuous management is difficult and expensive. A key concern is the inadvertent introduction and global spread of agent…

The current state of myiasis vaccine technologies are reviewed mainly in the primary research genera of Lucilia and Hypoderma. The importance of myiasis flies as primary causes of morbidity and mortality in agricultural species and man has not diminished despite the existence of good control strategies. However, the development of vaccines against myiasis infections has been relatively quiescent for more than 10 years despite the rapid development of genomic and proteomic analysis and of skills in data interpretation. The value of vaccine research in an era of chemical primacy is analysed. In …

Myiasis is an infestation of living or dead tissue of humans and animals by diptera larvae. Gingival myiasis is a rare pathology and is mainly associated with poor oral hygiene, alcoholism, senility, suppurative lesions, mouth breathing, mental retardation and hemiplegia. Myiasis is most common during summer since the fly population increases during this season. Mostly it occurs in farmers and people who live in tropical climates. Gingival myiasis in humans in Turkey is limited to only a few cases. According to our literature research, this is the first case of gingival myiasis produced by lar…

Two myiasis cases are presented which illustrate aspects of this infestation, and the role of the medical laboratory scientist with regard to the importance of critical thinking, problem-solving, and interprofessional communication skills. The purpose is to heighten awareness of myiasis, and emphasize the role of the medical laboratory scientist as a member of the healthcare team in confirming diagnosis.

"Myiasis" is considered in Hindu mythology as "God's punishment for sinners." It is known to infest live human or animal tissue. Literature abounds with reports of myiasis affecting the nasal cavity, ear, nonhealing ulcers, exophytic malignant growth, and cutaneous tissue. But report of myiasis of the tracheal stoma is rare. Only a few cases of tracheal myiasis have been reported in literature. We report a case of tracheostomal myiasis in an elderly male. The species which had infested the stoma was identified as Chrysomya bezziana, an obligate parasite. This is to our knowledge the first case…

Myiasis is a rare, worldwide, human disease with seasonal variation, caused by developing larvae of a variety of fly species. It can be dangerous when infestations penetrate into the brain. In the available literature, we have found only a few papers concerning ear myiasis caused by Lucilia sericata. Here, we report 2 cases of aural myiasis. Early intervention (surgical removal, occlusion) in these cases should prevent complications. Larvae, for further examination, should be killed by immersion in very hot water, then preserved in an ethanol.
