Cigarette smoking contributes to lung remodelling in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). As part of this remodelling, peribronchiolar fibrosis is observed in the small airways of COPD patients and contributes to airway obstruction. Fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition is a key step in peribronchiolar fibrosis formation. This in vitro study examined the effect of cigarette smoke on bronchial fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition, and whether aclidinium bromide inhibits this process. Human bronchial fibroblasts were incubated with aclidinium bromide (10(-9)-10(-7) M) and exposed to

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is an uncommon spindle cell tumor, occurring mainly in children and young adults. It is an extremely rare cardiac tumor especially patients under 1 year. Although it is benign, the tumor may be very aggressive locally. The diagnosis of this unusual pediatric cardiac tumor without pathologic specimens is difficult. We report a rare case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors of the right ventricle in a 7-month-old girl presenting with respiratory distress and cyanosis.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the trachea is a rare benign tumor in adults. It is mostly seen before the age of 16. We describe a 20-year-old female patient who presented with stridor. She had a fixed obstruction on spirometry, and computed tomography and bronchoscopy confirmed tracheal thickening and stenosis below the vocal cords and bronchial wall thickening at the level of the carina. Bronchoscopic biopsy confirmed an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. She recovered after mechanical dilatation and resection via rigid bronchoscopy, followed by corticosteroid therapy.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) occurring at retroperitoneal sites has rarely been reported. We report the case of a previously well 14-year-old girl with no history of abdominal disease whose past medical history and family tumor history were unremarkable. She complained of intermittent abdominal pain for one month. An abdominal mass was found on physical examination and abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed a hypodense soft mass, the size and location of which suggested a well delineated retroperitoneal tumor surrounding the superior mesenteric vessels measurin

Renal fibrosis is a disease affecting millions worldwide and is a harbinger of progressive renal failure. Understanding the mechanisms of renal fibrosis is important for discovering new therapies that are required to prevent loss of renal function. Recently, we identified pericytes that line the kidney microvasculature as the precursor cells of the scar-producing myofibroblasts during kidney injury. Kidney pericytes are extensively branched cells embedded within the capillary basement membrane and stabilize the capillary network through tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 3 and angiogenic gr…

A nine-year-old female Rottweiler presented with a 6-week history of progressive impairment of hindlimb adduction. Clinical examination showed abduction of both hind legs when walking on a smooth surface, pain at the medial surface of the left thigh, and an intrarectal palpable mass at the pelvic floor. Electromyography demonstrated fibrillation potentials in the adductor muscles on both sides. Pelvic radiographs showed severe osteolysis of the ischium. Gross post-mortem examination following euthanasia disclosed a large retroperitoneal mass, invading the obturator foramina and compressing bot

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a very rare benign tumor in children that mimics malignant tumors in its aggressiveness locally and by the possibility of recurrence after surgical resection, and causing anemia of chronic disease, which is a decrease in hemoglobin 1 to 2 g/dL below normal level in a patient with chronic illness.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-month-old boy from Libya presented with microcytic hypochromic anemia. He had been treated in three countries and five centers without response to medical therapy. He was investigated at our center and found to have a mass in

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) of the lung are considered rare and benign; however, involvement of adjacent thoracic organs, local recurrence and distant metastases have been described. The potential presence of distant metastases supports the hypothesis that those tumors should not be considered 'clinically' benign, although histological features suggest this attitude; thus, complete resection and careful follow-up are mandatory. We present a case of a bilateral pulmonary IMT with left adrenal gland metastasis in a patient with dyspnea and cough.

Fibrosis of the lungs and other organs is characterized by the accumulation of myofibroblasts, effectors of wound-repair that are responsible for the deposition and organization of new extracellular matrix (ECM) in response to tissue injury. During the resolution phase of normal wound repair, myofibroblast apoptosis limits the continued deposition of ECM. Mounting evidence suggests that myofibroblasts from fibrotic wounds acquire resistance to apoptosis, but the mechanisms regulating this resistance have not been fully elucidated. Endothelin-1 (ET-1), a soluble peptide strongly associated with…

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) occurs infrequently in the liver. It is controversial whether it represents a low grade mesenchymal neoplasm or a reactive inflammatory lesion. Local recurrence and metastasis are rare and some tumors are associated with infectious agents. We report on a case of a large and partially resected IMT with local recurrence and diaphragm and kidney infiltration detected on routine surveillance two years later. Histologically, the tumor showed spindle cells without atypia, mitosis or necrotic areas in a myxoid and collagenized background with inflammatory cell

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMFT) is a distinct entity under the group of inflammatory pseudotumours. Sometimes these pseudotumours can have an aggressive appearance on imaging, which makes it indistinguishable from other malignant neoplasms. We present a case of IMFT of the bladder in a child.

This case report describes the recognition of nodular and asymmetric perivascular clusters of myofibrolasts-leiomuscular cells in the stroma of immature chorionic villi associated with a fetus delivered at 26 weeks gestation with a peculiar variation of bone dysplasia syndrome and oligohydramnios. Although myofibroblasts are known to exist at these sites, the finding may represent an unusual mesenchymal dysplasia of the placenta perhaps related to the syndrome.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a very rare benign tumor composed of myofibroblastic spindle cells of uncertain etiology, which can occur at any age and affect any organ system. More and more cases of IMT in children have been described in pediatric literature in recent years. However, this tumor occurring intraabdominally in children has rarely been reported in Taiwan. Here we present a 1-year-9-month-old boy who had fever and abdominal pain only for 2 days, symptoms mimicking acute abdomen. After imaging study, a huge tumor nearly 10 cm in diameter was incidentally found over the

A 13-year-old boy who had epigastric pain and pallor for 2 months and found to have an ulcerative mass in the stomach and underwent partial gastrectomy. A diagnosis of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT) of the stomach was made on histological examination. Three years later, recurrence in the stomach, with invasion into the pancreas and hilum of the spleen was noted and was managed by wide wedge resection of the stomach, distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy. The patient has been recurrence-free for the past 2 years. Gastric IMT is an uncommon tumour in children with unpredictable progno

A fetal echocardiogram at 20 weeks of gestation revealed a large ascending aortic aneurysm in the presence of a normal aortic root and normal intracardiac anatomy. No other abnormalities were noted in the fetus. Upon termination of pregnancy, histopathological examination revealed an isolated benign nodular myofibroblastic lesion of likely hamartomatous origin, a first description of such pathology contributing to the formation of an aneurysm in the ascending aorta.

We describe a case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor with an unusual constellation of clinical, pathologic, and genetic findings. A 7-year-old girl had an 11-cm abdominopelvic mass accompanied by thrombocytosis, anemia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and elevated C-reactive protein. The inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor displayed unusual histologic features of zonal coagulative necrosis, high cellularity with a herringbone pattern, and tumor-associated osteoclast-like giant cells. The complex tumor karyotype included a translocation t(1;2)(q21; p23). Following resection, the lab
