INTRODUCTION: A rare case of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) provoking a severe gastric bleeding is reported. Case report and results. The Authors report on the case of a 53-year-old male patient who presented with hematemesis, melena and severe acute anemia (Hb: 6 g/dl). EGDS disclosed a protruding lesion centrally ulcerated, of 7 cm in size, localized in the upper half of gastric corpus. Multiple endoscopic biopsies were negative for neoplastic changes. Because of further gastric bleeding, a total gastrectomy with "Roux-en-Y" reconstruction was performed in urgency GIST of smooth muscl

The clinical investigation for inflammatory myopathies, which include polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and others, was outlined. The serum creatine kinase (CK) activity increases in the majority of cases of inflammatory myopathies. However, the cases of myositis associated with connective tissue diseases tend to show normal or moderately elevated CK activity. Among the isoenzymes of CK, the MB fraction can increase in the course of treatment as it can originate from regenerating muscle fibres. The macro CK type 1 was reported to appear in association with myositides. Varieties of autoan

Hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell carcinoma (HLRCC) is an autosomal dominant familial syndrome that results from germline mutation in the fumarate hydratase (FH) gene and is associated with an increased risk for smooth muscle tumors of the uterus and skin and renal cell carcinoma. HLRCC associated RCC develop in up to 25% of patients, often presenting in the fourth decade and are high stage, aggressive tumors with poor clinical outcome. Most women with HLRCC develop large and bulky uterine smooth muscle tumors (USMT) in the second to third decade, thus presenting the ideal opportunity f

Three cases of acinic cell carcinoma of minor salivary glands, located respectively in the larynx, base of the tongue, and right tonsil, were encountered at the Section of Pathology of the ENT Department of the University of Padua between 1974 and 1978. Such neoplasms arising in minor salivary gland tissue are extremely rare, but may be found in all sites containing normal or aberrant salivary gland tissue. The histological and histochemical characteristics of the tumour are discussed together with the differential diagnosis from other neoplasms, particularly clear-celled tumours such as glyco

The desmoid tumour (DT) is a quite rare soft tissues neoplasm that lacks metastatic potential. Though it is characterized by a local infiltrating growth that involves frequent relapses after surgical excision. The presented case report refers to a young female in her childbearing age, who underwent the radical excision of a large DT infiltrating the left rectus muscle of the abdomen. The only radical treatment of this tumour is still the surgical resection carried out far from the tumour borders into the healthy tissues. Nevertheless, when these tumours arise in the abdominal wall, their resec

We report four cases of an unusual uterine smooth muscle neoplasm. All patients were of reproductive age, ranging from 23 to 41 years old, and had a pelvic mass or an enlarged uterus. Two also had menstrual irregularities. At laparotomy, an exophytic congested bulky tumor resembling placental tissue extended from the uterine wall into the broad ligament and pelvic cavity. In one case the tumors were bilateral but unequal in size. On gross examination, these exophytic components were the most distinctive feature. On microscopic examination the basic lesion appeared to be a dissecting leiomyoma

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the vulva is a very rare tumor, with less than 10 cases reported in the literature. We report a case of a 45-yr-old woman with extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the vulva confirmed by EWSR1 fluorescence in situ hybridization. Given the unusual site and prominent myxoid morphology, a broad differential diagnosis and a variety of ancillary testing was required. This article aims to review extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the vulva, the differential diagnosis of a myxoid spindle cell neoplasm of the vulva, and the diagnostic importance of immunohi

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) may be associated with various systemic diseases according to several studies.
OBJECTIVE: To identify prevalent and incident diseases in patients with AA and quantify their prevalence and odds and hazard ratios compared with those in controls without AA.
METHODS: A systematic review of the studies published before February 28, 2018, was performed by using the MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. Observational studies on prevalent or incident diseases in patients with AA were included, whereas studies limited to pediatrics or provid

Aim of the present study was a systematic examination of the tumors of the foot registered in the Hamburg Bone Tumor Registry regarding age, sex, location, diagnosis and morphological characteristics. The registry files and histological specimens of 367 tumors and tumor-like lesions of the foot were reviewed. Males were more frequently affected (ratio 4 : 3). Some 20.4 % of all mass forming tumors were malignant. Cartilage tumors (146 cases), cystic (132 cases) and osteoblastic lesions (33 cases) were most common. Several tumors showed a strong predilection for certain parts of the foot. In th

INTRODUCTION: Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is a subtype of soft tissue sarcoma characterized by diffuse infiltration patterns. Myxofibrosarcoma arises often in extremities. Its occurrence in the abdominal wall is extremely rare. Herein, we present here a case of high-grade MFS of the abdominal wall discovered in a 58-year-old woman complaining of an abdominal mass.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: This report illustrates the case of a female who presented a mass in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a well-circumcised, heterogeneous soft tissue mass. We p

Juvenile meagre Argyrosomus regius (Asso, 1809) maintained in experimental conditions developed lateral and/or bilateral circular-shaped sarcoma within the opercular cavity. The sarcoma was dense, reddish and its growth from the branchial arch exerted pressure on the operculum forcing it to open. Histologically, the neoplasm exhibited marked proliferation of mesenchymal connective tissue composed largely of fusiform cells, which developed in a solid pattern accompanied by abundant mononuclear cell types. Multifocal areas of discrete necrosis were also observed, compatible with a sarcomatous pr

BACKGROUND: Oncogenous osteomalacia (OOM), which is also known as tumour-induced osteomalacia, is a rare condition associated with a neoplasm and a related systemic bone demineralization caused by renal phosphate wasting. OOM usually occurs in association with a variety of different mesenchymal tumours, and they were categorized into four distinct morphological patterns which they termed "phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour". Of its 4 histopathological subtypes, the mixed connective tissue variant is most commonly observed. Only 10% of cases appear in the head and neck regions and moreover, only 5

Implants of corundum ceramic have been used in the treatment of 38 patients with bony tumours of the limbs. Data are presented concerning the replacement with ceramic implants of the joint ends and diaphyseal defects of long bones, as well as in various bones of the hand and foot. Experiments carried out over a long period have shown that corundum ceramic is a strong material and is biologically inert.

Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign osseous lesions containing blood-filled cavities separated by walls of connective tissue. They can be difficult to identify clinically due to similarities in presentation, imaging, and histology with other pathologies. Specifically, it is important to distinguish these benign lesions from malignant processes, as both surgical and medical management differ. We present the case of a 21-year-old patient who presented with impaired motor and sensory function in his lower extremities. Radiologic findings were concerning for an invasive neoplasm, and the intraoperati

INTRODUCTION: Warthin's tumour usually involves the parotid gland. However, it can also arise from ectopic salivary tissue in the para-parotid and latero-cervical lymph nodes.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 60-year-old man with a 3-month history of a smooth, mobile mass on the right side of the neck. Computed tomography (CT) scanning (coronal, axial and sagittal sections) showed a cystic lesion in the right upper neck without connection to the major salivary glands (8 x 4 x 3 cm). Complete surgical excision with a transverse neck incision was performed. Histological findings of the spe

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) commonly presents with systemic manifestations including fever, weight loss, and night sweats. Uncommonly, patients with DLBCL can present with musculoskeletal manifestations mimicking polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). Herein, the case of a 61-year-old woman who presented with pain in the bilateral shoulders, arms, hands, knees, pelvic girdle, and neck with bouts of fever, is presented. Laboratory workup for infectious and connective tissue diseases was non-revealing, except for elevated inflammatory markers. A positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomog

An 8-year-old, female domestic shorthair cat was presented with a ventral abdominal subcutaneous mass. A radiograph showed that the center of the mass contained what appeared to be steel sutures, presumed to be from an ovariohysterectomy performed 7 years earlier. The excised mass was irregular and contained numerous pockets filled with friable necrotic material and hemorrhages that were dissected by fibrous connective tissue bands. Multiple tangled and fragmented pieces of steel staples were deeply embedded within the mass. Histologically, the mass was non-encapsulated, densely cellular, and
