CONTEXT: Literature suggests that oncogenic osteomalacia is usually caused by a benign mesenchymal tumor secreting fibroblast growth factor subtype-23 (FGF-23), but the involvement of other phosphatonins has only been scarcely reported. We have previously published a seemingly typical case of oncogenic osteomalacia. Following curative neoplasm resection, we now report unique molecular characteristics and biology of this tumor.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 25-year-old man had been diagnosed with severe oncogenic osteomalacia that gradually crippled him over 6 years. 68Ga-DOTA-TATE positron emission tom

Angiofibroma of soft tissue is a recently described soft tissue tumor that is characterized by fibroblastic spindle tumor cells with arborizing capillary proliferation. Cytogenetically, it harbors a specific fusion gene involving the nuclear receptor coactivator 2 (NCOA2) gene. We report here additional new pathological and cytogenetic features. A soft tissue tumor in the left thigh of 73-year-old female was investigated. Microscopically, histiocytoid tumor cells were scattered in an edematous background with branching capillary proliferation. Immunohistochemically, we identified that the tumo

We have studied the possible origin of histiocytic cells, present in fibrous histiocytomas (MFH) by using immunohistochemistry to demonstrate lysozyme, alpha 1-antitrypsin, alpha 1-antichymotrypsin and receptors for peanut and soy bean agglutinin in tumour cells of MFH compared with their presence in tumour cells of malignant histiocytosis (MH) ('true' histiocytic lymphoma, 'true' histiocytic sarcoma). We included in this study a number of other soft tissue tumours (STT). Lysozyme was detected in half of the cases of malignant histiocytosis (n = 16) but in only two out of 77 MFH. alpha 1-Antit

Uterine inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) have been reported in association with pregnancy and, in some instances, secondarily involve the placenta. The clinicopathological spectrum of these tumors in the setting of pregnancy is not well defined. We investigated the clinical, morphologic, immunohistochemical, molecular cytogenetic, and genetic features of 6 uterine IMTs occurring in pregnant women. Each tumor was discovered at parturition, and none was identified by prenatal ultrasound. Patient age ranged from 25 to 41 years (mean 31.5). Tumor size ranged from 1.5 to 9 cm (mean 4.7).

Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a benign lesion characterized by its specific histological findings and is found as solitary or multiple lesions in several locations of the human body. The aim of the present systematic review is to give a detailed account of all reported cases of CFT in the literature and to analyze the available data, to completely characterize the entity from epidemiological, medical, and surgical aspects.A bibliographic research was performed from 1988 until 2015. A database with the patients' characteristics was made, including sex, age, location of the tumor, symptoms,

BACKGROUND: The exhaustive collection of new sarcoma cases and their second histologic review offer a unique opportunity to study their incidence and time trends in France according to the major subtypes.
METHODS: Data were collected from population-based cancer registries covering 22% of the French population. Crude and world age-standardized incidence rates (ASR) were estimated according to anatomic, histological and genetic groups, age and sex over the 2010-2013 period.
RESULTS: Time trends in incidence were calculated by the annual percent change over the 2000-2013 period. During the mos

PURPOSE: While previously thought to be clinically indolent, recent data suggest significant late metastatic capacity of solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs). We define prognostic factors for recurrence and disease-specific death (DSD) in resected primary SFTs.
METHODS: Resected primary SFTs from 1982 to 2015 were identified from a prospective, single institutional database. Risk factors for local (LR) and distant recurrence (DR), and DSD were assessed using competing risk analysis.
RESULTS: A total of 219 patients with median follow-up of 6.1 (0.1-22) years were included. Five- and 10-year cumula

Pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma (PLMS) was recently described as a morphologic variant of leiomyosarcoma; however, its diagnostic criteria, as shown by morphologic features and biologic behavior, remain controversial. We describe 28 cases of pleomorphic sarcoma with pleomorphic areas in more than two thirds of the tumor and an ordinary leiomyosarcomatous fascicular area covering less than one third as PLMS. PLMS comprised 8.6% of all the leiomyosarcomas (322 cases) registered in our institute. Patients ranged in age from 31 to 89 years (average, 57.9 years). Seventeen patients (60.7%) were male and

We describe the clinicopathologic features of 12 patients with a distinctive tumor of the kidney characterized by a mixture of epithelial and stromal elements that form solid and cystic growth patterns. Similar tumors were reported previously in the literature under various names, including adult mesoblastic nephroma. All but one of the patients were women. The only man had a long history of treatment with lupron and diethylstilbesterol. Seven of the women had histories of long-term oral estrogen use of whom six had undergone total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy sev

In doubtful clinical diagnosis, ultrasound investigation may represent a workable diagnostic means in revealing the nature of soft tissue alterations, as will be demonstrated by 6 clinical examples; in all cases a wrong clinical diagnosis delayed the necessary therapy and possibly deteriorated the prognosis of disease. In these patients correction of the clinical diagnosis was of decisive importance for consecutive diagnostics and therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution of histologic subtypes of soft tissue sarcomas (STS) in Kingston and St Andrew, Jamaica, according to age and topography.
METHODS: From the Jamaica Cancer Registry (JCR) archives, all cases of STS diagnosed between 1958 and 2007 were extracted. For each case, age, gender, histological diagnosis and anatomical site of tumour were recorded. Patients were categorized according to age at diagnosis as: children (0-14 years) and adults (> 14 years), and the distribution of histologic diagnoses with respect to age and anatomical site were analysed.
RESULTS:

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a group of lesions sharing the common features of co-expression of melanocytic and myogenic markers, with focal association of the cells with vascular walls. The PEComa group exhibits a wide range of morphologies. A "fibroma-like" variant of PEComa has been recently described. The case reported herein is that of an infant with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) presenting with a lip mass. Excisional biopsy showed a moderately cellular tumor composed of spindled to stellate cells embedded within a collagenized stroma. The cells showed focal periv

Epithelioid fibrous histiocytoma (EFH) is a rare lesion believed to arise from dermal microvascular unit fibroblasts and dendritic histiocytes. EFH has long been considered a morphologic variant of benign fibrous histiocytoma (dermatofibroma), with prominent epithelioid cytomorphology that can mimic both vascular and melanocytic neoplasms. The molecular basis for the relationship between EFH and benign fibrous histiocytoma has remained largely unknown, with some authors suggesting that EFH represents an entity that is biologically distinct from benign fibrous histiocytoma. Recent molecular stu

Sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma is a highly malignant, polymorphous neoplasm that combines features of carcinosarcoma and teratoma. We describe the clinicopathologic features and management of a well-documented example of this unique entity that involved a 41-year-old Hispanic man. The patient presented with a history of multiple episodes of epistaxis, nasal obstruction and frontal headaches. Computerized tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large mass filling the left nasal cavity and extending to the cribriform plate with involvement of the ethmoid sinuses, lamina papyra

Lipoblastoma (LPB) is a benign neoplasm that occurs predominantly in early childhood. We investigated clinicopathologic features, associated conditions, immunohistochemistry, and outcome in 59 LPB identified from surgical pathology and consultation files. Pathology materials, cytogenetics reports, and medical records were reviewed. Immunohistochemistry for S100 protein, CD34, and Mib-1 was performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue using standard techniques. Fifty-nine patients had 74 samples, including 14 patients with one or more with local recurrences among the 30 patients who ha

INTRODUCTION: Odontogenic fibroma is a rare benign neoplasm of mature fibrous connective tissue with variable amounts of inactive-looking odontogenic epithelium. Few recurrences of central odontogenic fibroma (COF) have been reported in the literature. This manuscript reports the enucleation of a recurrent COF and bone regeneration of the osseous defect with enamel matrix derivative and bone allograft.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old Asian female presented in 2015 with a palatal depression between #10 and 11. The patient previously had an odontogenic fibroma between #10 and 11 removed in 200

Myelofibrosis (MF) is characterized by a presence of an extra fibrous tissue in the bone marrow and additional hematopoiesis. The somatic mutation in the Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) gene (V617F) occurs gradually and is detected in about 50.0% of myelofibrosis or essential thrombo-cytopenia (ET) patients. Our aim was to determine the genotype status according to the carriers of the V617F mutation in patients with MF at the Hematology Ward of the University Hospital "Ivan Rilski" in Sofia, Bulgaria. DNA samples were isolated from venous blood of patients with various hematological disorders. DNA was a
