INTRODUCTION: A prospective study was performed of a cohort of extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) premature neonates (birth weight 500 to 1,000 g) consecutively admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. The aim of this study was to examine the thermal changes that occur during all the hygiene-related interventions in ELBW infants in the first 2 weeks of life.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was carried out for 10 consecutive months in the Neonatology Service of La Paz University Hospital. We studied all consecutively admitted ELBW infants who satisfied the following criteria: a) adequate w

BACKGROUND: Rates of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) continue to increase despite advances in healthcare. Various methods of delivering continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) can be contributing factors that increase the risk of developing BPD. A recent increase in BPD rates at a local neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) prompted further investigation into potential preventative practices.
PURPOSE: The project's goal was to reduce rates of BPD in the NICU by 20% after transitioning to FlexiTrunk CPAP, as well as through education to increase nursing confidence, which will improve complia

The clinical management of respiratory failure in the newborn often focuses on lung parenchymal stiffness due to immaturity, surfactant deficiency, infiltrates, and other causes. However, health care personnel should also consider the airway, which plays an important role in gas exchange and lung mechanics. The airway can be easily injured, and an injured airway can significantly alter both the acute and chronic course of lung disease in infants. Further, there are developmental changes that affect the susceptibility of the neonatal airway to injury. Recognizing and preventing causes of airway

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is a common, serious problem among premature infants. With advances in neonatal care, improved survival rates of small premature infants and improved diagnostic capabilities, IVH is seen with increased frequency in the high-risk nursery. Studies indicate 15-20% of premature infants (birth weight less than 1,500 gms), have been noted to have IVH Many of these neonates survive beyond infancy and may subsequently be seen in pediatric neurosurgery and neurology clinics with long-term problems such as hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and seizures.

INTRODUCTION: Geopolitical segregation of Palestine has left a fragile healthcare system with an unequal distribution of services. Data from the Gaza Strip reflect an increase in infant mortality that coincided with a significant increase in neonatal mortality (12.0 to 20.3 per 1,000 live births).
OBJECTIVE: A baseline study was carried out to evaluate available resources in neonatal units throughout Palestine.
STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional, hospital-based study was conducted in 2017 using the World Health Organization's "Hospital care for mothers and newborn babies: quality assessment and

We hypothesized that because the view of the glottis is better with videolaryngoscopes, successful intubation in neonates would be accomplished in a shorter time with the GlideScope (®) (Verathon, Inc., Bothell, WA) videolaryngoscope (GVL). Forty-five students of the University of Athens, inexperienced in both techniques, participated in the study (21 medical students and 24 nursing students, crossover randomized study). Following a brief educational session, each participant practiced and attempted intubation on a neonatal manikin using conventional laryngoscope and GVL, as many times as requ

From 7% to 10% of all retinoblastomas and from 44% to 71% of familial retinoblastomas in developed countries are diagnosed in the neonatal period, usually through pre- or post-natal screening prompted by a positive family history and sometimes serendipitously during screening for retinopathy of prematurity or other reasons. In developing countries, neonatal diagnosis of retinoblastoma has been less common. Neonatal retinoblastoma generally develops from a germline mutation of RB1, the retinoblastoma gene, even when the family history is negative and is thus usually hereditary. At least one-hal

BACKGROUND: Although circumcision in male neonates is one of the most common procedures performed in neonatal surgery, mothers' preferences concerning the aspects of circumcision are not well-known. Since mother is the likely parent to present child for circumcision, her preferences should be given adequate consideration.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to evaluate maternal preferences for neonatal male circumcision in Enugu.
METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study where questionnaire was distributed by the researchers to consenting pregnant women attending antenatal clinics in two t

BACKGROUND: There are variable practices in the management of the parenteral nutrition (PN) process in hospitals having a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). In our hospital, PN is prepared partially on the neonatal ward by nurses but also at the central pharmacy by trained pharmacy technicians. A previous study showed a concentration non-conformity of 34% of on-ward PN preparations potentially resulting in under- or overfeeding of the patients.
OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to perform preliminary risk analyses (PRA) in preparation for our hospital's transition to universal central pharmacy

OBJECTIVES: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoproliferative disease of the preterm retina with the potential to cause irreversible blindness. Timely screening and treatment of ROP are critical. Neonatal nurses trained in wide field digital retinal photography (WFDRP) for screening may provide a safe and effective strategy to reduce the burden of ophthalmologists in performing binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy (BIO). The objective of the study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of WFDRP in the diagnosis of referral warranting ROP (RWROP).
DESIGN: Prospective diagnostic accuracy s

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a major cause of neonatal death and long-term neurodevelopmental impairment. Therapeutic hypothermia is an effective intervention to improve the prognosis of neonates with moderate to severe HIE, and its standardized management is crucial for optimizing outcomes. Based on domestic and international evidence and expert opinion, the Evidence-Based Medicine Group, Neonatologist Society, Chinese Medical Doctor Association developed the "Expert consensus on the clinical management of therapeutic hypothermia for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (2026)

The death of a twin hospitalised in neonatal intensive care presents several issues that the children's nurse must take into account. Identifying the elements which characterise the issues around supporting families confronted at the same time with the grieving and bonding processes enables suitable actions to be put in place.

Perinatal nurses are at higher risk for involvement in a malpractice suit than are their colleagues in other medical specialties. That risk can be minimized. A review of selected obstetrical malpractice claims reveals that key issues for perinatal nurses who want to avoid litigation include sound and current education in the interpretation of fetal heart rate tracings, the adoption of well-designed policies for the administration of oxytocin, ability and willingness to use the chain of command, comprehensive and objective documentation, and awareness of the fact that making the patient's well-

Scrotal or inguinal masses may represent inguinal hernias, hydroceles, or testicular torsion and are common findings in the newborn period. The clinician is challenged to differentiate between normal, abnormal, atypical, and pathologic findings and to seek urgent surgical consultation when compromised bowel, testis, or ovary is suspected. This issue of Focus on the Physical offers a review of the embryologic development of the processus vaginalis and testicular attachments to enhance the clinician's understanding of the development of these conditions. BACKGROUND: Parental support in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is critical; yet, the nursing staff may struggle to provide optimal support to NICU fathers. Generally, fathers are not viewed as equally competent caregivers when compared with mothers, and fathers often impart these beliefs on themselves. Increasing the nursing staff's knowledge and understanding of paternal support can change attitudes and foster positive behavior changes, enhancing the perception of support received by NICU fathers.
PURPOSE: To implement a needs assessment and educational intervention for the nursing
