BACKGROUND: In Cambodia, stunting and wasting affect, respectively, 32% and 10% of children 0⁻59 months while 55% are anemic. Our research aims to assess the efficiency of two local foods combined with nutritional education and counseling (CEN) activities as compared to CEN alone on improving child nutritional status and dietary intake.
METHODS: A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted in Soth Nikum area over a six-month period among children 6⁻23 months (n = 360) assigned to receive either moringa +CEN, cricket +CEN or CEN alone. Anthropometric measurements were performed and hemo

American society favors life style habits that lead to a plethora of physical disabilities, i.e., poor nutrition and a lack of exercise contribute to chronic disabilities and disease. Even though our life expectancies have increased, chronic disorders such as sarcopenia, diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular disease have become more prevalent. Nevertheless, Americans are slowly becoming more educated in health practices. A variety of therapies and nutritional supplements are being investigated to prevent and/or counteract chronic health disorders and aging. Muscle wasting referred to as "sarcope

Alterations in the ability to smell or taste are of considerable consequence, impacting quality of life, safety, nutrition, and dietary activities. These primary senses are influenced by a wide range of systemic diseases and disorders that commonly involve the entire body. These include viral, bacterial, fungal, protozoal, cestode, and nematode infections that can spread throughout the gastric, lymphatic, neural, or circulatory systems as well as classic autoimmune disorders, collagen diseases, diabetes, and hypertension, and others. Although a considerable literature has evolved in which the

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Child undernutrition remains an area of public health concern across the globe, particularly in developing countries like India. Previous studies have focused on the association of maternal nutrition with premature pregnancy and birthweight of child, with few establishing the intergenerational effect but limited to select populations and geography.
METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: This study used data from 35,452 children aged under 5 years and their biological mother from nationally representative Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS) in India. The outcome variab

Using data from the Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey (1988), this study investigates the factors that determine the nutritional status of children under five years of age. Several sociocultural, economic, and demographic variables were selected for the study. These independent variables were regressed against three proxy measures of malnutrition: height-for-age, weight-for-age, and weight-for-height. The results show that the nutritional status of a child is determined by a variety of factors that are biological, social, cultural, and economic in nature, namely, birth status, birth weigh

Nutritional anemias are important because they are easily reversed and because their underlying causes, most often unrelated to dietary intake, require individualized assessment. Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) usually results from iron losses accompanying chronic bleeding, including loss to intestinal parasites, or from gastric disorders or malabsorption in the elderly. Cobalamin-deficiency anemia, the only nutritional anemia with predilection for the elderly, nearly always stems from failure of intrinsic factor (IF)-related absorption. Folate-deficiency anemia, the only nutritional anemia usual

People with CF (pwCF) are at high risk for malnutrition, making nutritional management a critical aspect of CF care. Over the past several decades, optimal nutritional status for pwCF has been defined by body mass index (BMI) based on evidence linking suboptimal BMI to decreased lung function and life expectancy, although more recent changes in CF care may also bring changes to how nutritional health is defined. The historical focus on weight, BMI, and nutrition as key parts of multidisciplinary CF care starting at an early age places pwCF at increased risk for body image concerns and disorder

The neurologic manifestations of gastrointestinal disease are generally thought to be uncommon, although an increasing number of previously unidentified associations are being established. These neurologic disorders may result from nutritional or non-nutritional causes. In the absence of clear malnutrition, it is likely that many of these disorders are underdiagnosed. As an example, Wernicke's encephalopathy is found at autopsy in as many as 2 per cent of brains, a very high percentage, given the rare recognition during life. The likely underdiagnosis of nutritional neurologic disorders is unf

BACKGROUND: Children with identified developmental disabilities (IDD) experience a higher risk of growth retardation. Anthropometric indicator is one common objective measurement used to determine malnutrition in those children. A comprehensive nutritional assessment tool should be introduced to offer a more robust approach in understanding their nutritional problems.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the use of Subjective Global Nutrition Assessment (SGNA) as a nutrition assessment tool for children with IDD in comparison to the anthropometric indicators.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was condu

Seventeen patients with advanced, noncurable gastrointestinal cancer with symptoms of anorexia and malnutrition were treated with controlled enteral or total parenteral nutrition over a 3-week period. Eleven patients received enteral and six parenteral nutrition. The nutrition was given with 30-40 kcal/kg b.w. daily. No anticancer treatment was given. Before and after the treatment period, the patients were assessed regarding their nutritional, immunological, and performance status. None of the studied nutritional parameters changed significantly over the 3-week period and there was no clear i

Critically ill patients are hypermetabolic and have increased nutrient requirements. Although it is assumed that nutritional support is beneficial in this group of patients there are no well designed clinical trials to test this hypothesis. The rationale for nutritional support, therefore, is based upon clinical judgement. Although it is not known how long a critically ill patient can tolerate what is effectively starvation, the loss of lean tissue which occurs in catabolic patients (20-40 g nitrogen/day) suggests that depletion to a critical level may occur after 14 days. Total parenteral nut

Nutritional issues in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often receive inadequate attention both in regard to therapy and nutritionally related complications of IBD. This article reviews much of the research that has evaluated the role of diet in the causation, primary treatment, and adjunctive therapy of both ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD). Benefits have been demonstrated in the use of elemental diets or polymeric diets in CD in both acute flare up or maintenance of IBD. A careful team approach can overcome problems in implementing nutritional therapy. Nutrition also has a cri

Mortality and post-operative complications are elevated in Crohn's disease, for many reasons: pre-existing septic complications, malnutrition, impaired cell-mediated immunity, failure to identify enteric fistulas and/or abdominal abscess during surgical operation. From 1984 to 1996 in 383 patients with Crohn's disease we performed 426 surgical procedures, observing post-operative complications in 28 of these (6.5%). However, septic complications in the surgical field were only 7 (1.6%). A 83-year-old patient died after surgery because of heart failure. The risk of post-operative complications
