Medical, social service and coroner reports were reviewed for 14 cases of fatal child abuse and neglect identified at a children's hospital from 1988-1992. Twelve cases involved physical abuse and two neglect. The median age was 6.5 months (range 24 days to 3 years). Six families (43%) had prior protective service involvement; however, four of the referrals involved a sibling. Only two of 12 physical abuse victims had a history of a prior suspicious injury. Varicella are regarded as relatively harmless disease. Since the application of antibiotics as complication appear rare mortal courses of generalised varicella above all as a sequel of haemorrhagic-gangrenous forms of course (especially under therapy of corticosteroids), of varicella pneumonia and of encephalitides, while the bacterial superinfection is in second place concerning exitus letalis. Two own observations of varicella infections having a fatal outcome in a 1 1/2-year-old child and a 2-year-old child are reported. In the two cases the efflorescences of the skin were already healing.

We report a unique case of post-traumatic avascular necrosis of tibia in a 12-year-old boy following a Salter-Harris type II physeal injury of the proximal tibia. The diagnosis was made on the basis of classical radiological findings. The only clinical symptom was diffuse shin pain. The patient was managed conservatively. At our 2-year follow-up, there was clinical and radiological evidence of spontaneous resolution of avascular necrosis, but with sequelae. The child developed a limb-length discrepancy and genu valgum. The parents of the child refused further treatment.

Volvulus of the appendix is an uncommon phenomenon in children (J Can Med Assoc.1966;95:926-927). Only a few reports exist in the literature concerning this subject. We describe a 2-year-old child who presented with right lower quadrant abdominal pain and was initially diagnosed as ruptured appendicitis with abscess. Attempt at computed tomography-guided drainage failed to produce purulent drainage, and the child was taken to the operating room for diagnostic laparoscopy. Operative findings revealed a volvulus of the appendix, and a laparoscopic appendectomy was performed.
