Periodontal Disease Diagnosis by a Chemically Etched Single-Mode Fiber-Optic Biosensor for Label-Free Detection of Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8).

A miniature label-free biosensor based on a chemically etched single-mode optical fiber (SMF) is reported for the detection of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), a salivary biomarker of active periodontitis with a clinical decision threshold of 20 ng/mL. Fibers etched in 48% hydrofluoric acid to a waist diameter of 16.0 ± 1.4 µm gave a mean refractive index (RI) sensitivity of 376.8%/RIU and an RI limit of detection (LOD) of 5.9 × 10-4 RIU. Fibers were tested with MMP-8 spiked into phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and into saliva over 0-200 ng/mL using a post-rinse protocol with per-fiber matr

Diagnosis of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura: easy-to-use fiber optic surface plasmon resonance immunoassays for automated ADAMTS-13 antigen and conformation evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory diagnosis of immune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) remains challenging when ADAMTS-13 activity ranges between 10% and 20%. To prevent misdiagnosis, open ADAMTS-13 conformation gained clinical attention as a novel biomarker, especially to diagnose acute iTTP in patients with diagnostic undecisive ADAMTS-13 activity. Plasma ADAMTS-13 conformation analysis corrects for ADAMTS-13 antigen, with both parameters being characterized in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-based reference assays requiring expert technicians. OBJECTIVES: To design ADAMTS

Efficacy of Nebulized Dexmedetomidine and Lignocaine Inhalation versus Lignocaine Alone as Premedication for Flexible Fiber-optic Bronchoscopy under Sedation: A Randomized Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Airway management is an integral part of general anesthesia, allowing ventilation and oxygenation and working as a mode for delivering anesthetic gases. Awake fiber-optic-guided intubation is an essential component of airway management in difficult cases. We aim to study the benefits of nebulized dexmedetomidine with lignocaine over lignocaine alone for anesthetizing the airway for flexible fiber-optic bronchoscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the study, after written informed consent, 50 patients were randomly allocated into two equal groups of 25 each. The intervention group rec

Hybridized nanolayer modified Ω-shaped fiber-optic synergistically enhances localized surface plasma resonance for ultrasensitive cytosensor and efficient photothermal therapy.

Inadequate sensitivity and side-effect are the main challenges to develop cytosensors combining with therapeutic potential simultaneously for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Herein, localized surface plasma resonance (LSPR) based on hybridized nanolayer modified Ω-shaped fiber-optic (HN/Ω-FO) was developed to integrate cytosensor and plasmonic photothermal treatment (PPT). On one hand, hybridized nanolayers improve the coverage of nanoparticles and refractive index sensitivity (RIS). Moreover, the hybridized nanoploymers of gold nanorods/gold nanoparticles (AuNRs/AuNPs) also result in intense

The Effect of Glatiramer Acetate on Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness in Patients with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis: A Longitudinal Optical Coherence Tomography Study.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a technique that allows for the assessment of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) and total macular volume (TMV), which reflect neuroaxonal integrity within the retina. As such it has been used in multiple sclerosis (MS) to study neurodegeneration. Glatiramer acetate (GA) is a widely used treatment for MS, which is suggested to have a possible neuroprotective role. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess RFNLT and TMV changes in relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) patients who started treatment with GA and were followed for a 24-month

Diode and Nd:YAG laser contact transscleral cyclophotocoagulation in a human eye: a comparative histopathologic study of the lesions produced using a new fiber optic probe.

We compared the contact cyclodestructive effects (both gross and histologic) achieved with diode and Nd:YAG laser wavelengths (810 and 1064 nm, respectively), using equivalent energy doses, released by means of a new optical delivery system in a human eye that was soon to be enucleated because of a choroidal melanoma. For both lasers, a fiber optic system (400 microns) with a focusing microlens placed at the end of the fiber was used. The center of the beam was placed 1.5 mm from the corneoscleral limbus. At medium (5.2 to 6.6 J) and higher (7.8 J) energy levels, the cyclodestructive thermal d

Sensitive fiber-optic localized surface plasmon resonance sensor for early pancreatic cancer detection via carbohydrate antigen 19-9 and supplementary biomarkers.

Early detection of pancreatic cancer remains a major clinical challenge with the limited specificity of representative biomarker such as carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9). CA19-9 with traditional methods including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are primarily used to monitor treatment responses and predict prognosis. This study describes the potential of CA19-9 as an indicator for early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer using a sensitive fiber-optic localized surface plasmon resonance (FO LSPR) sensor. The FO LSPR technology detected CA19-9 within 10 min, with a detection limit about 1
