Root resorption after orthodontic treatment.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment can result in root resorption. OBJECTIVE: To determine if apical root resorption is related to the type of appliance used and/or the direction and amount of tooth movement. METHODS: The pre- and post-treatment tooth lengths of the maxillary and mandibular first molars and incisors were measured on panoramic radiographs of 114 subjects. Associations between changes in the lengths of the incisors and positional changes in the upper and lower central incisors were determined for 45 subjects with pre- and post-treatment cephalometric radiographs. RESULTS: Takin

The effect of drugs on orthodontic tooth movement.

OBJECTIVE: Molecules produced in various diseased tissues, or drugs and nutrients consumed regularly by patients, can reach the mechanically stressed paradental tissues through the circulation, and interact with local target cells. The combined effect of mechanical forces and one or more of these agents may be inhibitory, additive or synergistic. The objective of this review is to outline the mechanisms of action and effects of some commonly used drugs on tissue remodeling and orthodontic tooth movement. DESIGN: All the existing published literature on the effects of various drugs that are pr

A survey of hypodontia in Japanese orthodontic patients.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the prevalence and distribution of hypodontia in the permanent dentition, excluding the third molars, in a sample of Japanese orthodontic patients. METHODS: Orthopantomograms of 3358 Japanese orthodontic patients (1453 boys and 1905 girls) between the ages of 5 and 15 years were examined for evidence of hypodontia. RESULTS: The prevalence of hypodontia was 8.5% (7.5% for boys, 9.3% for girls) with no statistically significant difference between the sexes. The average number of missing teeth per child was 2.4 (2.5 for boys, 2

Orthodontic correction of transverse arch asymmetries.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether asymmetries in the transverse dimension are corrected after orthodontic treatment and to determine differences between age-group responses in the correction of transverse asymmetries. Sixty orthodontically treated subjects with transverse asymmetries in arch width were grouped by age, treatment modality, and arch location. Casts were analyzed to assess the correction of arch asymmetry. Lateral cephalometric analysis was performed to assess vertical change differences between age groups, and to detect correlations between vertical and arch-widt

Intermittent force in orthodontic tooth movement.

A single orthodontic activation lasting one hour can initiate tooth movement. The purpose of this study is to examine tooth movement, osteoclasts, and root resorption in rats following several one-hour activations. Rats (n = 144) were randomly assigned to intermittent (multiple activations of 1 hr/day), continuous, and sham appliances. Twelve rats were killed at 3, 5, 7, and 14 days. Tooth movement, osteoclasts, osteoclast %, and root resorption % were quantified. Continuous force moved molars mesially at days 3 and 14 (p < 0.05), but intermittent and sham did not. Intermittent and continuous

[Biological basis of orthodontic tooth movement].

The effect of orthodontic therapy is dependent of the biological possibilities and limitations of the dento-alveolar complex. Biomechanical effects determine the first phase of tooth movement. In the second phase hyalinisation occurs in almost all cases. Elimination of the hyalinised tissue is associated with undermining bone resorption. Next, 'real' tooth movement starts. At the pressure side the normal structure of the periodontal ligament is destroyed and so is the tooth attachment. At the tension side deposition of trabecular bone is found and the tooth attachment remains. The regulation o

[Stability of orthodontic treatment of occlusal asymmetry].

A common finding in orthodontic patients is asymmetric occlusion. These asymmetries can be dental, skeletal, or functional in origin. Since many patients have typical posterior overjet the use of Class II-Class III and anterior crisscross elastics are contra-indicated. Even in skeletal discrepancies axial inclination compensation can produce relatively normal overjet in the arch. The best strategy for non-extraction therapy is to move teeth around the arch rather than an en-masse movement of the entire arch. A number of methods for unilateral distalization are discussed. Midline correction req

Pulpal response to intrusive orthodontic forces.

Many studies have examined the effect of orthodontic forces on supporting tissue. However, their effect on dental pulp has not been sufficiently studied. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, histologically, the pulpal response to the action of intrusive orthodontic forces. The study was performed on 40 first premolars which had to be extracted for orthodontic reasons from 11-17 year-old patients. The twenty teeth of the experimental group received, prior to extraction, an intrusive force with an initial load of 150 g over a period of 15 to 20 days. The control group comprised the 20 h

Clinical radiological issues in orthodontic practice.

Radiology has long played a critical role in the treatment planning of the orthodontic patient. The focus of this article is on common issues that confront the orthodontist and how a basic understanding of radiological techniques and simple radiological procedures can be used to resolve them. The article addresses the advantages and shortcomings of the two most common films, the cephalogram and the panoramic view, taken by orthodontists. It goes on, however, to discuss other views that can easily be taken in the private office to supplement these radiographs.

Endosseous dental implants in orthodontic therapy.

This paper presents cases in which endosseous titanium implants are used in orthodontic treatment as an alternative method of providing anchorage, as well as solving prosthodontic problems, and shows that such an approach can be successful.

Orthodontic treatment for the cleft palate patient.

This article is an overview of the treatment possibilities and the role of the orthodontist in the management of patients with cleft palate. Orthodontic intervention and treatment may be indicated soon after birth (infant orthopedics), in the deciduous, mixed, and permanent dentitions and also in the adult patient. This article focuses primarily on decision-making and procedural steps performed by the orthodontist during the permanent dentition stage. The need for coordinated interaction with other team members is emphasized.

Improving orthodontic bonding to gold alloy.

Flat tabs of cast gold alloy (n = 156) were subjected to either of three surface treatments: (1) roughening with diamond bur, (2) aluminum oxide sandblasting, and (3) sandblasting plus tin electroplating. Mandibular incisor edgewise brackets were bonded with Concise (BIS-GMA resin) (Unitek, Monrovia, Calif.) or Superbond C&B (4-META metal bonding resin) (Sun Medical Co. Ltd., Kyoto, Japan), or with Concise after application of an intermediate resin. All-Bond 2 Primers A and B (Bisco Dental Products, Itasca, Ill.), or B alone. All specimens were stored in water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours, and

Biomechanics of orthodontic correction of dental asymmetries.

Correction of dental asymmetries requires special attention in orthodontic treatment. Several types of asymmetries are described, along with the biomechanics needed for correction. Treatment with different appliance designs that correct these asymmetries with the lowest level of negative contribution from side effects will be compared with conventional treatment.
