Osteopathia striata--a case report.

Osteopathia striata is an unusual skeletal condition that can affect the bones of the skull quite markedly and result in dental problems that have rarely been discussed in the literature. The characteristic features exhibited by the patient in this case report were dense maxillary and mandibular bone, a high forehead with frontal bossing, a broad nasal bridge, prominent zygomatic arches and thickened angles of the mandible. The mouth opening was limited as a result of sclerosis of the mastoid process, and right lateral excursion of the mandible was reduced, probably because of a deformity of t

Congenitally osteosclerotic (oc/oc) mice are resistant to cure by transplantation of bone marrow or spleen cells from normal littermates.

The osteosclerotic mouse is a new, lethal recessive skeletal mutation which inherits osteopetrosis as an autosomal recessive. Affected mice are hypocalcemic and also have rickets. Osteoclasts are small and numerous with little evidence of function. This report examines the effects of bone marrow and spleen cell transplantation from normal littermates on survival and the radiographic appearance of the skeleton in 29 mutants. This procedure did not significantly prolong life or effect radiographic changes in the skeleton of most (27) recipients. However, two treated mutants lived for almost a ye

[Nuclear magnetic resonance tomography of the sacroiliac joint. A new examination technic in the differential diagnosis of rheumatic diseases of the lumbosacral transition].

25 patients with the clinical diagnoses of possible sacroiliitis were investigated by Magnetic Resonance Tomography (MR). Using axial or coronal tomography in a T1-weighted sequence (7 slices, 1 echo, NEX: 2, slice thickness 8 mm, TR: 600 ms, TE: 33 ms) and in a T2-weighted sequence (7 slices, 4 echos, NEX: 2, slice thickness 8 mm, TR: 1800 ms, TE: 33, 66, 99, 132 ms) we found normal sacroiliac joints in 10 patients, in 12 patients we diagnosed a sacroiliitis, in 3 patients a sacroiliac sclerosis. Descriptive evaluation and T2-calculation we showed, that MR is specific in differentiation of in

Severe craniofacial sclerosis with multiple anomalies in a boy and his mother.

A boy is described with severe hyperostosis of the cranium and facial bones, and many other abnormalities including macrocephaly, abnormal facies, cleft palate, conductive hearing loss, speech defect, dental and digital anomalies, delayed skeletal development, short fibulas, short stature of postnatal onset, cervical kyphosis, and progressive lumbar lordosis. His mother exhibited craniofacial sclerosis, similar dental defects, and mild osteopathia striata without other abnormalities. This family may represent a previously undescribed inherited syndrome with cranial sclerosis.

Osteosclerotic plasmacytoma of maxillary bone (orbital floor).

Plasma cell neoplasms have been classified as multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma and extramedullary plasmacytoma. They are usually considered as osteolytic lesions of bone except for the rare occurrence of osteosclerotic lesions. This paper describes the first reported osteosclerotic plasmacytoma of the maxillary bone and orbital floor. The difficulties in establishing a diagnosis and the relationship to other plasma cell neoplasms are discussed. Osteosclerotic plasmacytomas are a rare variant of plasma cell tumors which usually produce osteolytic lesions rather than bony sclerosis. Sixty

Vertebral involvement in Erdheim-Chester disease: a case report of non-BRAF-driven diagnosis and treatment challenges.

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis that is frequently misdiagnosed because of its nonspecific systemic symptoms. We report the case of a 73-year-old woman who presented with persistent back pain, abdominal discomfort, and fever. Imaging revealed predominant thoracolumbar vertebral involvement, characterized by multifocal osteosclerosis on computed tomography and abnormal signal intensity with contrast enhancement on magnetic resonance imaging. This radiologic pattern may closely mimic inflammatory disorders, hematologic malignancies, or metastatic disease…

Expanding the phenotypic spectrum of TNFRSF11A-associated dysosteosclerosis: a case with intracranial extramedullary hematopoiesis.

Dysosteosclerosis (DOS) is a rare sclerosing bone dysplasia characterized by osteosclerosis and platyspondyly. DOS is genetically heterogeneous and causally associated with mutations in three genes, SLC29A3, CSF1R, and TNFRSF11A. TNFRSF11A has been known as the causal gene for osteopetrosis, autosomal recessive 7, and is recently reported to cause DOS in three cases, which show a complex genotype-phenotype relationship. The phenotypic spectrum of TNFRSF11A-associated sclerosing bone dysplasia remains unclear and needs to be characterized further in more cases with molecular genetic diagnosis. …

[Parkinson's disease associated with SAPHO syndrome: a case report].

A 77-year-old woman with Parkinson's disease presented with left chest pain. Physical examination revealed tenderness at her second left sternocostal joint. There was no skin rash. Chest CT revealed hyperostosis of the sternocostal joint, and cervical MRI showed vertebral osteosclerosis and osteolysis. 99mTc-MDP bone scintigraphy showed an increased activity in the sternocostal joint and vertebral column. The patient was diagnosed with SAHPO syndrome according to the diagnostic criteria. Her chest pain was relieved after oral administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Although pai…

Cortical bone osteocalcin content and matrix composition in autosomal dominant osteopetrosis type I.

Several bone matrix protein constituents, including the major component collagen type I and the hydroxyapatite binding protein, osteocalcin, have been implicated in the regulation of bone turnover. Cortical bone osteocalcin, collagen and mineral content were studied in autosomal dominant osteopetrosis type I (ADO), a disorder characterized by diffuse symmetrical osteosclerosis. Iliac crest bone biopsies were obtained from eight patients (mean age 43.0 years, range 17-63 years) and compared with 16 age- and sex-matched normal controls (mean age 44.1 years, range 20-61 years). The osteocalcin le…

Imaging Modalities in Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: A Narrative Review of Diagnostic Findings and Staging.

Background and Objectives: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a serious complication of antiresorptive and antiangiogeni … , extracted data, and assessed methodological quality. Results: Early-stage MRONJ findings included osteosclerosis, lamina dura thickening, and increased prominence of the inferior alveolar canal, while late-stage findings included periosteal reactions, sequestration, and cortical erosion. CBCT and MRI were most sensitive for early detection and lesion extent. H …

[Evaluation of magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of temporomandibular degenerative joint disease].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the ability of magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) in diagnosis of degenerative joint disease (DJD). METHODS: A total of 152 patients with temporomandibular joint disorder(TMD) from June 2019 to June 2021 were included. A total of 304 temporomandibular joints(TMJs) were examined both by cone-beam CT (CBCT) and MRI. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of MRI for nine types of TMJ abnormalities were calculated with CBCT as gold standard. RESULTS: The sensitivity of MRI for condylar surface erosion, condylar osteophyte formation, condylar osteosclerosis, subcortical cysti…
