PURPOSE: Digital rectal examination is integral to staging prostate cancer. Ultrasound guided biopsy establishes the diagnosis, and it may provide useful information regarding disease grade and extent. Treatment decisions are largely based on information gained from digital rectal examination and biopsy but this information is only useful if it correlates with the radical prostatectomy specimen and prognosis. In the course of their practice 2 gynecologists have conducted a program of screening for breast cancer in 1538 patients ages 35-49 years and on 1102 patients ages 50 or older. To provide insight into the significance of findings reported from screening asymptomatic women for breast cancer, we reviewed 19,928 mammographic studies with the accompanying physical examination and correlated these findings with 554 breast biopsies.
