Giant pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland: an unusual case presentation and literature review.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common type of all salivary gland tumours. Although uncommon, cases of giant pleomorphic adenomas have been described in the medical literature, the majority involving the parotid gland. This paper describes an unusual case of a giant adenoma arising in the parotid gland. The patient underwent surgical resection of the giant tumour, which was one of the largest pleomorphic adenoma reported in recent literature. This case has prompted us to evaluate the behaviour of those benign tumours, which suggested that aesthetic and social morbidity is sufficient to justify

A case of infarcted Warthin tumor misdiagnosed as Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma: diagnosis confirmed by MAML2 rearrangement with case report and literature review.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a common malignant neoplasm of the parotid gland. A rare pathological subtype, Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma, closely resembles infarcted Warthin tumor in clinical presentation and histopathological features, and contributes to a high-risk of misdiagnosis. Therefore, extensive experience in morphological diagnosis by pathologists and molecular testing results are crucial for accurate diagnosis. We report a case of infarcted Warthin tumor initially misdiagnosed as Warthin-like mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The diagnosis was subsequently corrected based on molecul

Oncocytic carcinoma arising in the submandibular gland with disseminated bone metastases.

Oncocytic carcinoma of the head and neck is a very rare neoplasm. It usually occurs in the parotid glands. Only 11 cases of oncocytic carcinoma of the submandibular gland have been reported, and no cases have shown distant bone metastasis. A 67-year-old man presented with a tingling sensation in both hands due to a herniated cervical disc. A whole body bone scan and PET-CT showed disseminated bone metastases. Neck CT revealed a 1.7 cm calcified left submandibular mass. The submandibular gland and bone marrow biopsies were consistent with oncocytic carcinoma. Our case is the first report of onc

Intraparotid Osteolipoma: Treatment Option and Surgical View.

Osteolipoma is a benign neoplasm originating from the mesenchymal fat tissue cells and characterized by the presence of bone formation. In the head and neck district osteolipoma has been described as parapharyngeal, nasopharinx, submandibular gland, eyelid, floor of the mouth, and skull base lesion. Only 1 case of osteolipoma was reported as a neoplasm of the parotid region. Considering the rarity of the osteolipoma, our purpose was to describe the first case of totally intraparotid gland localization of osteolipoma and summarize and review the actual literature concerning the presence of this

Parotid or carotid? Misled by site.

We present an interesting scenario where a 64 years old male presented with a long standing painless, infra-auricular swelling, which had progressively increased in size. Based on the site, the clinical impression was of a salivary gland lesion and FNAC was performed. The smears were unusually cellular and had necrotic background. The cytological diagnosis was a cystic neoplasm of salivary gland, possibly mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Warthin's tumor was also kept in differential. However, the radiological investigations, which were made available after the FNAC report were conflicting with cytolo

Oncocytic variant of sialadenoma papilliferum - a rare salivary gland tumor: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sialadenoma papilliferum (SP) is a rare minor salivary gland neoplasm that accounts for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. The tumor typically affects older people, presenting most commonly as a slow-growing tumor of the hard palate, although other anatomical subsites, comprising the oral cavity and parotid glands, have also been reported. CASE REPORT: We report a SP occurring in a 90-year-old female. The patient described feeling a nodule on her palate for several years. The lesion was painless and clinically resembled a round craterlike ulceration of diameter 3 mm. The e

Warthin Tumor of the Parotid Gland: The History of an Eponym.

The eponymous history of Warthin tumor (WT) is a fascinating issue in the field of salivary gland pathology. The late decades of the nineteenth century and the turn of the century saw notable German and French contributions on WT. Especially, the seminal 1910 paper of Albrecht and Arzt of Vienna is the foundation for the current knowledge of WT. It is generally believed that prior to this pioneering study, Hildebrand of Göttingen accurately described the lesion of WT in 1895. However, the historical origins of WT appear to be unsettled, and only a few German pathologists and surgeons are aware

Deep lobe parotidectomy-why, when, and how?

This editorial explores the controversies concerning the surgical management of the deep portion of the parotid gland. Specifically, when should the parotid deep lobe be removed if there is metastatic cancer to a superficial parotid node or when a primary aggressive cancer is found in the superficial lobe? The background, indications, rationale, and results of removing the deep lobe nodes are reviewed. Removal of the deep lobe is done to optimize the oncologic outcome for the patient. Deep lobe parotidectomy plays an important role in the treatment of many parotid gland malignancies.

An overview of the rare parotid gland cancer.

Cancer of the parotid gland is relatively rare, but carries poor prognosis owing to its prevailing distant metastases. In addition to the disease's basic epidemiology and pathology, we review some current discoveries of its tumorigenesis molecular mechanism. Based on published salivary gland cancer clinical trial data, non-surgical antitumor efficacies amongst a range of chemotherapy, radiation, and concurrent therapy regimens are compared. We also present the current development status of novel radiation therapy and targeted therapeutics, focusing on intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMR

Intradural extramedullary metastasis of oncocytic carcinoma of the parotid gland: A first case report and review of the literature.

We present an extremely infrequent case of intradural metastasis of a parotid tumour, responsible for motor deficit in legs. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an intradural metastasis of a malignant and rare parotid tumour, oncocytic carcinoma. It accounts for less than 1% of salivary gland tumours. Its management is not codified and its prognosis seems to be poor. Local recurrences are common, as are regional metastases. Distant metastases are present in less than 30% of cases and are poorly described, mainly involving the lung. Thanks to the surgical treatment, our patient

Current thinking about the management of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid: a structured review.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common tumour of the parotid gland, and can recur after excision. Recurrent pleomorphic adenoma can be a challenge to treat, and has variable outcomes. The aim of this review was to summarise current thinking in its management, which may be helpful to clinical teams and could improve patients' health-related quality of life. We searched several online databases using the key terms pleomorphic adenoma, recurrent pleomorphic adenoma, parotid gland tumours, parotid surgery, radiotherapy and parotid pleomorphic adenoma, and parotid surgery outcomes. Information coll

[Primary Parotid Carcinoma: Influence of a Two-step Procedure on the Oncological Outcome].

BACKGROUND: Malignancies of the parotid gland represent a rare form of head and neck cancer. Advanced stages are usually recognized as such, whereas early tumor stages are sometimes diagnosed only after parotidectomy due to lack of signs of malignancy. The present study investigates whether this unplanned 2-stage approach has a negative impact on the outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study includes clinical and histological data of patients with parotid cancer which were treated in the Department of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of the University Medical Center Ulm between
