Lateral tongue pleomorphic adenoma in pediatrics: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma, the most common benign salivary gland tumor, typically occurs in the parotid region but can also arise in minor salivary glands. Its occurrence in the lateral tongue is infrequent, making this case the first reported from Ethiopia and the second in English literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We present an 11-year-old girl who underwent an excisional biopsy for a tongue swelling lasting 2 years. The swelling was located in the lateral middle third of her tongue. Post-operative follow-up at one year showed a smooth recovery. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: Salivary gland tum…

Case series of rare iatrogenic sialocele complications following facelift surgery: clinical presentation, management, and outcomes.

Sialocele is a rare but important complication that may follow facelift surgery, typically as a result of inadvertent injury to the parotid gland or its duct. It often presents as a painless, fluctuant swelling in the preauricular region and, if not properly managed, can lead to patient distress and aesthetic dissatisfaction. We conducted a retrospective review of three female patients, aged 42-56, who developed sialocele 10-14 days after superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) plication rhytidectomy. Parameters recorded included time to presentation, swelling characteristics, treatment m

Unicentric Castleman disease in intraparotid lymph node: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Castleman disease (CD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by non-neoplastic lymph node hyperplasia. Unicentric Castleman disease (UCD), the most common clinical form, typically presents as a solitary, asymptomatic mass. Involvement of intraparotid lymph nodes is rare and often mimics salivary gland neoplasms, complicating preoperative diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old female presented with a painless, enlarging mass in the left parotid region. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed a well-demarcated, homogeneously enhancing mass with additional smaller lesions i…

Low-Grade Fibromyxoid Sarcoma Featuring an Unusual EWSR1-CREB3L2 Gene Fusion: Report of a Rare Case Arising in the Parotid Gland.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS), also known as Evan's tumor, is a fibroblastic tumor with a deceptively bland morphology but a high metastasizing potential and late recurrence. It presents clinically as a slowly growing mass in the deep soft tissue of extremities and trunk. Morphologically, it shows a biphasic pattern with alternating fibrous and myxoid areas, whorling growth pattern, hypocellularity, and bland fibroblasts with curvilinear or arcuate vessels in between. Collagen rosettes with central hyalinization is a helpful feature but not specific. MUC-4 is the most sensitive immunos

Post Herpetic Frey's Syndrome.

Frey's syndrome is characterized by unilateral sweating and flushing of the skin in the area of the parotid gland, occurring during meal, or on salivary stimulation. It is a common complication following surgery/injury in the parotid gland region/temporomandibular joint surgery; however, very few cases have been reported of its occurrence following herpetic infection. It is important for the clinician to recognize its unusual symptoms as early as possible to prevent its potential negative social and psychological effect on the patient. It is diagnosed on clinical presentation and confirmed by

Solid blue dot tumour: minor salivary gland acinic cell carcinoma.

Acinic cell adenocarcinoma (ACC) is a low-grade malignant salivary neoplasm that constitutes approximately 17% of all primary salivary gland malignancies. In the head and neck region, the parotid gland is the predominant site of origin and ACC is usually more frequent in women than men. Previous radiation exposure and familial predisposition are some of the risk factors for ACC. ACCs rarely involve minor salivary glands constituting only 13-17% of all minor salivary gland tumours. Generally, a slowly enlarging mass lesion in the tail of the parotid gland is the most frequent presentation. ACC

Low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma of the parotid gland: a case report.

Low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma is a rare tumor that is recognized as a variant of cystadenocarcinoma by the 2005 WHO classification. We report a case of low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma. The patient was a 32-year-old woman who presented with a mass in the right parotid region. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a polycystic mass in the right parotid gland. The preoperative fine needle aspiration biopsy showed no malignancy, however the frozen section during surgery showed carcinoma. The patient subsequently underwent total parotidectomy with preservatio…

Ductopapillary apocrine carcinoma of the eyelid metastatic to the parotid gland: report of a case diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

Ductopapillary apocrine carcinoma (DPAC) of the eyelid is a rare malignant neoplasm in the periocular region. The relative rarity of this tumor is a diagnostic challenge to the cytopathologist, especially when present as a metastatic lesion to an intraparotid lymph node, where the differential diagnosis includes primary parotid neoplasms, as well as various other metastatic malignancies. There are only a few reported cases of recurrent and metastatic DPAC of the eyelid, and to our knowledge, metastatic DPAC diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) has not been described. We report a c

Angiomyolipoma of the parotid gland: a case report.

Angiomyolipoma is a hamartomatous process that most frequently occurs as a single lesion or multiple foci in the kidneys of patients affected by tuberous sclerosis. Angiomyolipoma can also arise in extrarenal sites, among which the liver is the most frequently recorded. Only rare cases of angiomyolipoma located in the head and neck region (ear and oral and nasal cavity) have been described. The purpose of the present article is to report a case of angiomyolipoma of the parotid gland. A 68-year-old woman appeared for treatment with a slow-growing nodule located in her right parotid gland. Ultra

Small access postaural parotidectomy: an analysis of techniques, feasibility and safety.

For cosmetic consideration of parotidectomy, the surgical approaches have evolved from Blair incision through modified facelift incision to postaural-hairline incision. The present study aims at evaluating the feasibility and safety of the new technique of postaural approach. Parotidectomy was performed with a 4-5 cm incision in the postaural sulcus. There were 69 patients who were assessed pre-operatively feasible for consideration of the postaural parotidectomy. There were 56 (81 %) patients who could have the postaural parotidectomy successfully without complications. The minimally invasive

Focused review of investigation, management and outcomes of salivary gland disease in specialty-specific journals.

We review papers on diseases of the salivary glands published in journals relating to the head and neck, which are commonly read by members of our specialty. Most of the papers focus on the investigation and treatment of diseases of the parotid gland, which reflects the relative prevalence of parotid lesions among salivary gland diseases. Minimally invasive surgery is increasingly of interest. There is a lack of clinical trials that address the many controversies concerning salivary gland surgery, and much of the evidence for treatment is based on small case series and expert opinion, partly b

Locoregional Parotid Reconstruction.

Parotidectomy for benign and malignant tumors often results in conspicuous contour abnormalities and soft tissue defects. Immediate reconstruction leads to improved patient satisfaction and local or regional flaps can be used for reconstruction in most cases. This article provides a systematic approach to parotid reconstruction.

Clinicopathologic factors associated with recurrence in low- and high-grade parotid cancers.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine clinicopathological correlates of outcome among patients with parotid gland cancer. METHODS: The medical records of 126 patients treated by surgery for localized parotid cancer were retrospectively reviewed to identify the clinicopathologic correlates of recurrence-free survival (RFS) according to histologic grade. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis revealed that age and lymphovascular invasion were significant factors for recurrence in patients with low-grade cancer (p = .049 and p = .019, respectively), whereas perineural invasion was the

Local Rhomboid Flap Reconstruction for Skin Defects After Excising Large Parotid Gland Tumors.

Most parotid tumors grow slowly, and sometimes these patients do not request surgical treatment until the tumors become large and affect their appearance. The surgical treatment of these large tumors is usually accompanied by large skin defects after excision, and it is challenging for surgeons to close the defect primarily. This report describes the case of a 68-year-old man with a left parotid gland tumor (largest dimension, 110 mm) and the case of a 79-year-old man with a left parotid gland tumor measuring approximately 77 mm that had existed for decades. These patients underwent facial ner

An interim analysis of acute treatment adverse events and patient reported quality of life for functional imaging guided salivary gland sparing radiation therapy using diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Evolving evidence suggests that regional sparing of the parotid gland during radiation therapy could reduce radiation-induced xerostomia in head and neck cancer. This interim analysis investigates the functional relationship between the diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) derived parotid gland biological at-risk volume (BRV) dose and acute adverse events, including patient-reported quality of life (QoL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four head and neck cancer patients underwent MRI-simulation to delineate parotid gland BRVs using DW-MRI derived appar

Parotid gland metastasis in Merkel cell carcinoma of the head and neck: A series of 14 cases.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare cutaneous cancer of neuroendocrine cell origin that occurs frequently on the head and neck. With a high incidence of local recurrence and regional and distant metastasis, it carries a poor prognosis. We performed a retrospective study to determine the prognostic implications of parotid gland metastasis in MCC of the head and neck. Our study population was made up of 14 patients-13 men and 1 woman, aged 62 to 87 years (mean: 75.9)-who underwent a parotidectomy for the diagnosis of MCC over a period of 10 years and 9 months. Ten patients had a primary skin l
