Ontario Medical Association position paper on health effects of ground-level ozone, acid aerosols and particulate matter.

This review of the evidence of the health effects of air pollutants focuses on research conducted in Ontario. Seven key Ontario studies are cited. These findings are highly significant for people living in the Great Lakes basin (and particularly the Windsor-Quebec corridor), where high levels of certain air pollutants (eg, ground-level ozone and ultra-fine particles) occur more frequently than in other parts of Canada. The issue is a serious one, requiring an integrated and comprehensive approach by many stakeholders, including the active involvement of organized medicine. It is important that

Exposure to Airborne Particulate Matter in Regional Environments of Bangladesh and Its Effects on Respiratory Health: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution represents a critical public health crisis in Bangladesh, driven by rapid industrialization, urbanization, and widespread emissions from brick kilns, traffic, and biomass burning. Elevated levels of fine particulate matter and toxic gases across both urban and rural regions contributes to significant reductions in life expectancy and escalating respiratory disease burdens. Therefore, the present review aims to examine the role of fine/ultrafine particulate matter and hazardous gases in respiratory health outcomes among the Bangladeshi population to synthesize evidence…

Cumulative Vulnerability to Particulate Matter and Incident Asthma: Joint Effects of Urbanicity, Poverty, and Age in a Nationwide Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to ambient fine and coarse particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) is a major risk factor for asthma development. However, how urbanicity, poverty, and age jointly modify this association and contribute to disparities in asthma incidence remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study of 8,252,498 adults in South Korea using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. Health records were linked to 1km2 resolution estimates of long-term PM2.5 and PM10 exposure. Asthma incidence was assessed using Cox proportional hazards mode…

Assessing the impact of a negative air ionization system on particulate matter and gaseous pollutants in the swine farrowing environment.

Air quality on swine farms has long been a concern for both human and swine health as it has been previously linked with respiratory issues; the main cause being the inhalation of small airborne particulate matter (PM) < 10 μm in diameter. Negative ionizing systems have previously been successfully used to improve air quality in human residential- and commercial buildings as well in agricultural settings. However, less is known about the efficacy of negative ionizing systems in commercial swine farrowing environments. Thus, the objective of this study was to use a swine farrowing environment t…

Particulate matter concentration is associated with increased utilization of the emergency department: a single-centre time-series analysis.

Fluctuations in emergency department (ED) utilization may be related to pollutant concentration variations that can heighten acute pathologies, exacerbate chronic conditions or indicate increased human activity. This study investigates the association between particulate matter (PM2.5-PM10) concentrations in patients' residential areas and ED visits. Retrospective, single-centre, time-series cohort study on a 100km2 urban area around a level 1 hospital in Florence, Italy, with 307,279 ED visits of patients of age > 14 years between 01/01/2019 and 31/12/2022. PM2.5 and PM10 daily concentrations…

Health benefits of a reduction in ambient fine particulate matter levels for post-neonatal infant survival in Taiwan.

Infants' and children's health is particularly susceptible to exposure to various environmental contaminant insults as their immune systems are immature and daily activities may present differing patterns of exposure. Although some studies noted an association between long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and increased infant mortality frequency, few investigations examined the relationship between reduced exposure to PM2.5 and changes in infant mortality rates. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether diminished levels of PM2.5 in Taiwan improved post-n…

Consequences of exposure to particulate matter on the ocular surface: Mechanistic insights from cellular mechanisms to epidemiological findings.

Exposure to air pollutants, especially in the case of particulate matter (PM), poses significant health risks throughout the body. The ocular surface is directly exposed to atmospheric PM making it challenging to avoid. This constant exposure makes the ocular surface a valuable model for investigating the impact of air pollutants on the eyes. This comprehensive review assembles evidence from across the spectrum, from in vitro and in vivo investigations to clinical studies and epidemiological studies, offering a thorough understanding of how PM10 and PM2.5 affect the health of the ocular surfac…

Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter modifies the association between physical activity and the risk of hypertension.

The trade-off between the potentially detrimental effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and the benefits of physical activity (PA) is unclear. We aimed to explore the independent and interaction effects between long-term PM2.5 exposure and PA on blood pressure (BP) and hypertension. A total of 8704 adults (≥45 years) without hypertension at baseline in a nationwide cohort of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were followed from 2011 to 2015. The participants were selected using a four-stage, stratified, and cluster sampling procedure. The annual PM2.5 concentratio…

The Influence of Airborne Particulate Matter on the Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Large Retrospective Study in Chongqing, China.

Emerging research findings suggest that airborne particulate matter might be a risk factor for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, the concentration-response relationships and the susceptible time windows for different types of particulate matter may vary. In this retrospective analysis, we employ a novel robust approach to assess the crucial time windows regarding the prevalence of GDM and to distinguish the susceptibility of three GDM subtypes to air pollution exposure. This study included 16,303 pregnant women who received routine antenatal care in 2018-2021 at the Maternal and Ch…

Impacts of dust events on chemical characterization and associated source contributions of atmospheric particulate matter in northern China.

Sand and dust have significant impacts on air quality, climate, and human health. To investigate the influences of dust storms on chemical characterization and source contributions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in areas with different distances from dust source regions, PM2.5 and associated chemical composition were measured in two industrial cities with one near sand sources (i.e., Wuhai) and the other far from sand sources (i.e., Jinan) in northern China in March 2021. Results showed that PM mass concentrations significantly increased and exceeded the Chinese National Ambient Air Qualit…

Reading the Score of the Air-Change in Airborne Microbial Load in Contrast to Particulate Matter during Music Making.

The potential impact of music-making on air quality around musicians was inferred at the outset of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic from measurements on individual musical instruments and from theoretical considerations. However, it is unclear to what extent playing together in an orchestra under optimal ventilation conditions really increases infection risks for individual musicians. In this study, changes in indoor air quality were assessed by measuring common parameters, i.e., temperature, relative humidity, and carbon dioxide, along with particle counting and determining the presence of airborne ph

Particulate matter (PM10) induces in vitro activation of human neutrophils, and lung histopathological alterations in a mouse model.

The epidemiological association between exposure to particulate matter (PM10) and various respiratory and cardiovascular problems is well known, but the mechanisms driving these effects remain unclear. Neutrophils play an essential role in immune defense against foreign agents and also participate in the development of inflammatory responses. However, the role of these cells in the PM10 induced inflammatory response is not yet fully established. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the effect of PM10 on the neutrophil-mediated inflammatory response. For this, neutrophils from healthy adult human …

Dietary nitrate intake and vegetable consumption, ambient particulate matter, and risk of hypertension in the Nurses' Health study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested that dietary nitrate could lower blood pressure levels whereas ambient particulate matter (PM) may increase risk of hypertension. However, it is unknown if these exposures may modify each other. OBJECTIVES: We collected information on dietary nitrate intake and vegetables consumption and estimated long-term exposures to ambient PM for women in the Nurses' Health Study. METHODS: Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for risk of hypertension were calculated using Cox proportional hazards models with adjustment for potential demographic, l…

Ambient fine particulate matter exposure disrupts circadian rhythm and oscillation of the HPA axis in a mouse model.

Emerging evidence supports that exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with the metabolic syndrome. As the main neuroendocrine axis in mammals, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis's circadian rhythm (CR) plays an essential role in regulating metabolic homeostasis. Our previous studies found that ambient PM2.5 exposure caused CR disorder of the critical enzymes involved in lipid metabolism in mouse liver and adipose tissues. However, the impact of ambient PM2.5 exposure on the HPA axis is not fully illustrated yet. Male C57BL/6 mice were randomly exposed to …

Longitudinal relationship of particulate matter and metabolic control and severe hypoglycaemia in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for the metabolic impact of long-term exposure to air pollution on diabetes is lacking. We investigated the association of particulate matter <10 μm (PM10) and <2.5 μm (PM2.5) with yearly averages of HbA1c, daily insulin dose (IU/kg) and rates of severe hypoglycaemia in type 1 diabetes (T1D). METHODS: We studied data of 44,383 individuals with T1D < 21 years which were documented in 377 German centres within the diabetes prospective follow-up registry (DPV) between 2009 and 2018. Outcomes were aggregated by year and by patient. PM10-and PM2.5-yearly averages prior to the …
