Human pulmonary pasteurellosis.

Pasteurella multocida causes hemorrhagic septicemia in many domestic and wild animals. The most common human infection with P multocida is a local cellulitis following animal-inflicted wounds, preponderantly cat bites and scractches. The typical clinical manifestations and complications have been well described previously. We present three cases of pulmonary pasteurellosis that were recently evaluated by the infectious diseases service at Barnes Hospital. In three additional cases, the technologists in the microbiology laboratory isolated P multocida from respiratory tract secretions.

[Corneal abscess caused by Pasteurella following cat scratch injury].

Authors report a Pasteurella Multocida corneal abscess after a scratch from a cat. The evolution was torpid and needed a transfixiant keratoplasty. They recall bacterial tanks, infestation ways, clinical manifestations and bacteriological identification. They note the low occurrence of ophthalmological manifestations and the sensibility of Pasteurella to various antibiotics, especially Beta lactams, phenicol and cyclins.

Isolation and antimicrobial susceptibilities of bacterial pathogens from bovine pneumonia: 1994--2002.

Between 1994 and 2002, a total of 390 (46.3%) Mannheimia haemolytica, 292 (34.7%) Pasteurella multocida, and 160 (19.0%) Histophilus somni were isolated at the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory from lungs from 6-18-month-old beef cattle with pneumonia. The ratio of M. haemolytica isolations to P. multocida isolations decreased from 3.1 in 1994 to 0.8 in 2000 while increasing to 1.5 in 2002. Mannheimia haemolytica isolations significantly (P < 0.05) decreased from 62.5% in 1994 to between 30.6% and 50.4% in 1998--2002. Pasteurella multocida isolations significantly (P < 0.05) increa…

Dog-lick-associated verrucous soft tissue lesion induced by Pasteurella stomatis: An unexpected carcinoma-like presentation.

Pasteurella species are Gram-negative, non-motile coccobacilli colonizing the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract of cats and dogs. Soft tissue infections after bites, scratches, or trauma are most often caused by Pasteurella multocida. Pasteurella stomatis, although rarely reported, may also colonize humans and present with a spectrum ranging from mild skin infections to sepsis and death. We describe a zoonotic P. stomatis infection presenting as a verrucous tumor-like mass following contact with a household dog.

Rabbit pasteurellosis: induced disease and vaccination.

Pasteurellosis was induced in rabbits by conjunctival inoculation with 2 strains of Pasteurella multocida. The LD50 of strain P1062 (a bovine isolate) was 10(5.1) colony-forming units and that of strain P1059 (a turkey isolate) was 10(5.5) colony-forming units. Pasteurella-free rabbits were vaccinated IV or mucosally with boiled cells of P multocida or a cross-reactive uridine diphosphogalactose epimerase-deficient mutant of Escherichia coli J5. In rabbits challenge exposed with P multocida strain 1062 or 1059, homologous P multocida strain gave the best protection against fatal bacteremia. Pa…

[Acute total knee replacement infection after a cat bite and scratch: a clinical case and review of the literature].

In the last 15 years only few cases of Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) total knee arthroplasty infection have been published, mostly related to cat or dog bites or scratches. We report a case of P. multocida total knee arthroplasty infection in a 64-year- old patient, 10 days after being scratched and bitten by his cat. The patient was successfully treated with debridement and tibial interspacer exchange and antibiotic treatment for 6 weeks. Antimicrobial prophylaxis should be considered in cat or dog bites or scratches victims with prosthetic joints.

Vaccination studies against experimental bovine Pasteurella pneumonia.

Vaccination-challenge experiments were conducted in colostrum-deprived calves to evaluate the efficacy of Pasteurella bacterins and vaccines against experimental pneumonic pasteurellosis. Calves were vaccinated with formalin-killed bacterins and live vaccines, then challenge exposed intratracheally with P. haemolytica or P. multocida. Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus was inoculated intranasally three to four days prior to P. haemolytica challenge-exposure. All calves were examined for macroscopic and microscopic lesions after being found dead or following euthanasia four to seven days a

Pasteurella canis osteomyelitis and cutaneous abscess after a domestic dog bite.

The genus Pasteurella is part of the normal oral flora of many animals, including domestic cats and dogs. In humans, Pasteurella may cause complications ranging from cellulitis to septicemia but rarely causes osteomyelitis or septic arthritis after bites and/or scratches by cats and dogs. Although Pasteurella multocida is a common cause of infection, other Pasteurella species have also been cultured from wounds in humans. We describe here, a case of a cutaneous abscess and acute osteomyelitis associated with P canis after a domestic dog bite. To our knowledge, no previous case of P canis has b…

Whole-genome sequencing of the hemorrhagic septicemia vaccine strain in Bangladesh.

Hemorrhagic septicemia (HS) is an acute and economically important bacterial disease of cattle and buffalo caused by Pasteurella multocida. In this study, we report the whole-genome sequence of the HS vaccine strain, P. multocida BLRI-LRI-HS (Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute-Livestock Research Institute-hemorrhagic septicemia-vac), used for vaccine production in Bangladesh. The assembled genome was approximately 2.3 Mbp, with 40.5% GC content.

Spontaneous Pasteurella pneumonia in adult laboratory goats complicated by superinfection with Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis and Muellerius capillaris.

Three cases of Pasteurella pneumonia in laboratory goats were diagnosed during a 21 month period. Two goats died acutely and a third was euthanized after four weeks of unsuccessful therapy. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the lung lesions of all three goats. Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis and Muellerius capillaris also were present in the lungs of the third goat. Pasteurella infections were associated with fibrino-hemorrhagic-necrotizing pleuritis and pneumonia, while lungs superinfected with Corynebacterium also contained microabcesses. The gross and histologic lesions are describ…

Sialic Acid metabolism and systemic pasteurellosis.

Pasteurella multocida subsp. multocida is a commensal and opportunistic pathogen of food animals, wildlife, and pets and a zoonotic cause of human infection arising from contacts with these animals. Here, an investigation of multiple serotype A strains demonstrated the occurrence of membrane sialyltransferase. Although P. multocida lacks the genes for the two earliest steps in de novo sialic acid synthesis, adding sialic acid to the growth medium resulted in uptake, activation, and subsequent transfer of sialic acid to a membrane acceptor resembling lipooligosaccharide. Two candidate-activatin…

Puzzling encounter of idiopathic pasteurella bacteraemia.

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative coccobacillus that is commonly transmitted through animal bites including cats and dogs. The degree of infection can be worrisome in the immunosuppressed population with a stark correlation in patients with cirrhosis. However, taking that population into account, only 13 cases of P. multocida bacteraemia have been recorded with the majority of those cases having cirrhotic liver disease along with multiple comorbidities. Here, we present an elderly patient with only pertinent medical history of mixed hyperlipidaemia who presents after a mechanical fall w…

Cat cuddler's cough.

Pasteurella multocida typically causes cutaneous infections in humans following animal bites or scratches. Primary pulmonary disease, however, can occur in humans after inhalation of airborne particles or by aspiration of colonized or infected nasopharyngeal secretions containing this organism. Symptoms of P. multocida pulmonary infection in humans are variable, ranging from cough with or without hemoptysis to severe prostration. P. multocida infection of the lower respiratory tree has a predilection for elderly patients with underlying lung pathology, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary …

Epidemiology of human infections by Pasteurella and related groups in France.

A retrospective study of infections due to Pasteurella (P.) and related groups was performed between the Pasteurella National Center and Nancy's hospital from 1985 to 1991. Among the 958 cases recorded, wound infections (bites, scratches and punctures) were the common forms of pasteurellosis (66%) caused by P. multocida (48%), P. canis (11%), P. dagmatis (5%), P. stomatis (4%), and in few cases by groups EF-4 and M-5 (14 and 13%, respectively). In human infections unrelated to animal wounds, respiratory tract diseases and bacteremia-septicemia were the predominant infections with respectively

Pasteurella Endocarditis: A Case Report and Statistical Analysis of the Literature.

Pasteurella is a genus of commensal bacteria of the oral cavity of several domesticated animals and a common cause of cellulitis after animal bites. Pasteurella has also been reported as a rare cause of endocarditis, with only 35 prior cases of definite Pasteurella endocarditis in the literature. Here, we present a case of Pasteurella multocida endocarditis treated successfully with surgery and antibiosis, as well as a review of the literature with statistical analysis of correlations between risk factors and clinical outcomes, as well as between treatment choices and clinical outcomes. Pasteurella challenge and ELISA serology evaluation of broiler breeders vaccinated with live cholera vaccine.

Broiler breeder pullets were vaccinated against fowl cholera at 10 and 20 wk of age using a live PM-1 Pasteurella multocida vaccine administered by wing web stick. Antibody production for P. multocida was measured at vaccination and at 1-4-wk intervals following vaccination by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Groups of vaccinated birds were challenged at 23 and 32 wk of age. Two doses of a live PM-1 P. multocida vaccine protected broiler breeder hens against virulent challenge up to 32 wk of age when measured antibody levels had a range of 1951-4346 and a geometric titer of 3000.

Pathology of experimental avian cholera in mallard ducks.

Mallard ducks (Anus platyrynchos) challenged with two isolates of Pasteurella multocida developed either acute or chronic lesions, depending on the isolate of P. multocida and the inoculation dose. Ducks that died acutely of avian cholera had lesions of a hemorrhagic septicemia with widespread vascular damage and focal necrosis in liver, spleen and other organs. Ducks that survived challenge developed chronic lesions in a variety of organs, including brain, lung, air sacs, joints, and eyes. Some surviving ducks sequestered bacteria within these loalized lesions and may be potential "carrier" b…

Fatal outbreak of systemic pasteurellosis in a wild boar (Sus scrofa) population from southwest Spain.

Pasteurella multocida is a common pathogen of swine that causes specific diseases with great economic impact. However, the importance of this pathogen in wild boar is still unknown. In the current work, an outbreak of systemic pasteurellosis in wild boar with a high mortality rate is described. A total of 23 wild boar of all ages were found dead over a 5-day period on a game estate in southwest Spain (11.11% mortality). Three animals were necropsied and showed subcutaneous edema, a generalized congestion, and fibrin deposits in the peritoneal cavity. Hemorrhages, general congestion, and intrav…
