BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that children with intellectual or learning disabilities are at risk for social exclusion by their peers but little is known of children's views on this topic. In this study, we used concept mapping to investigate elementary school children's thoughts on why they believe their peers with intellectual or learning disabilities are sometimes socially excluded at school.
METHOD: Participants were 49 grade five and six children who attended inclusive classrooms. Interviews were digitally recorded and transcribed. We extracted 49 unique statements from the tr

This study examined whether attachment, assessed using the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI; George, Kaplan, & Main, 1996) was linked to how adolescents reconstructed their memory for an initial interaction with an unfamiliar peer. Adolescents (N = 189, 62% female) completed a 10-min laboratory task with a student whom they did not know. Immediately following this task, adolescents rated their perceptions of the interaction. Adolescents completed the same perception measure 2 weeks later. Although adolescents classified as secure and insecure on the AAI did not differ in how they perceived unfa

Peer-delivered HIV prevention and intervention programs play an important role in halting the spread of HIV. Rigorous scientific analysis of the aforementioned programs has focused on the immediate reduction of risk-related behaviors among the target populations. In our longitudinal study of the Risk Avoidance Partnership Peer Intervention for HIV, we assessed the long-term behavioral effects of a peer-led HIV intervention project with active drug users. Initial analysis of the qualitative data highlights the role of altruism as a motivator in sustaining peer educators beyond the immediate goa

Despite epidemiological reports indicating that individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) are at heightened risk for cannabis use disorders (CUD), there is a dearth of research investigating the mechanisms underlying the nature of this co-occurrence. The present study examined the role of a well-established risk factor for cannabis use, peer influence, on the relationship between symptoms of SAD and CUD in a non-referred sample (N = 123). Lifetime symptoms of SAD and CUD were assessed using a structured diagnostic interview. SAD symptoms were significantly correlated with CUD symptoms and

Numerous studies have demonstrated that physically aggressive children exhibit hostile attributional biases in response to instrumental peer provocations, a social information-processing pattern that has been recognized as a contributor to peer-directed aggression. The present studies (N = 127 and N = 535) were designed to extend past research by evaluating the intent attributions and feelings of emotional distress of relationally and physically aggressive children in response to instrumental and relational provocation contexts. Results indicated that physically aggressive children exhibited h

In this study, the robustness of the Big Five personality factors in adolescents' self-ratings and peer nominations was investigated. Data were obtained on 2,001 adolescents attending secondary school (885 girls; 1,116 boys; M age = 14.5 years). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses on the self-ratings confirmed the Big Five personality factors. In contrast, exploratory analysis on the peer nominations revealed five different factors: Aggression-Inattentiveness, Achievement-Withdrawal, Self-Confidence, Sociability, and Emotionality-Nervousness. It is suggested that peers evaluate group

Seventy-eight fourth-grade subjects from a rural school containing an integrated special-education program viewed one of two videotapes that depicted a child demonstrating various kinds of academic and social behavior. On one tape, the teacher reacted positively to the child's behavior; on the other, negatively. The subjects were told that the child on the tape was either a "normal," mentally retarded, or learning-disabled fourth grader. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of two teacher conditions (positive or negative) and one of three labeling conditions. After viewing the videotape,

Academic misconduct predisposition remains an important concern in higher education, and peer behavior perception has emerged as a relevant correlate of students' academic integrity-related tendencies. Drawing on social cognitive theory and Bandura's moral disengagement theory, this study examined how perceived peer misconduct is associated with students'self-reported predisposition toward academic misconduct through moral disengagement and shame. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey of 418 undergraduate students from a comprehensive university in Shandong, China. Structural eq

Teaching membrane transport in introductory physiology is challenging because students often struggle to integrate membrane transport, electrochemical gradients, and related mechanisms into clinically meaningful reasoning. To address this problem, a case-based collaborative activity was introduced in a first-year cell physiology course for undergraduate life and medical sciences students. Small groups analyzed a membrane transport disorder, explained the underlying physiological defect, and were permitted to use AI tools during the task. After the activity and short presentation, the students

This study explores the influence of COVID-19 on peer-to-peer accommodation, from perspectives of both market performance and guests' mindset. Combination of qualitative and quantitative data, as well as analysis by smaller time unit, enables more subtle insights into participants' behavior. Based on Event System Theory, authentic market data is examined to demonstrate the trend of demand and supply of Airbnb housing in New York City. Online reviews are investigated, using Structural Topic Model, to reveal how guests' focuses transformed. Results show that peer-to-peer accommodation was strick

BACKGROUND: Engaging people who inject drugs (PWID) in research is challenging due to stigma, distrust, and structural barriers. Peer-led recruitment may enhance reach and equity, yet few studies have quantitatively evaluated its outcomes.
METHODS: Between Feb 2021-Dec 2023, a Partnerships Lead with Lived Experience implemented three new recruitment strategies within the HEPCO cohort study of PWID in Montreal, Canada. Strategies extended research activities into the community through a flexible engagement model comprising pop-up research clinics (n = 109 events), street outreach (n = 29 event

Student success is shaped by both financial stability and social connectedness, yet little research has examined these dynamics within Animal and Dairy Science programs. This study investigated financial well-being, peer relationships, and academic and career satisfaction among 298 undergraduates in Animal Science (ANS), Dairy Science (DYS), and General Pre-Veterinary (GENPV) at a large land-grant university (33% response rate). A significant GPA difference of 0.45 points was observed between respondents and non-respondents (3.47 ± 0.52 vs. 3.02 ± 0.84; P < 0.01), suggesting possible non-respo

BACKGROUND: Healthcare assistants delivering home-based palliative and end-of-life care face complex emotional and clinical demands with limited workplace support. Peer support had been suggested as a potential solution, yet no reviews of such interventions exist.
AIM: To understand and explain how, why, for whom and in what contexts workplace peer support interventions for healthcare assistants work (or do not work) in palliative and end-of-life care delivery at home.
DESIGN: Realist review registered with PROSPERO (registration number CRD42024606133).

OBJECTIVE: Health systems undertaking electronic health record (EHR) transitions often struggle to prepare and support clinicians in learning and using the new system. We evaluated a national peer coaching program-the National EHRM Supplemental Staffing Unit (NESSU)-designed to support clinicians during the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA's) transition to a new EHR. Our goal was to assess NESSU's reach, perceived usefulness, and association with key EHR user outcomes, and to characterize how NESSU achieved its observed impacts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a convergent mixed-methods

Access to first-line care for knee osteoarthritis (OA) is limited. Peer-led strategies offer a promising alternative for delivering support and up-to-date information to help individuals manage knee OA. This study used a co-design approach to develop a pain science-informed peer mentorship program to support knee OA self-management. Peer mentorship involves one-to-one tailored support delivered by a trained mentor with the same condition. Co-design ensures meaningful involvement of end-users across all stages of program development, guaranteeing their needs and preferences are captured. Indivi
