Neochondrogenesis in free intra-articular, periosteal, and perichondrial autografts in horses.

Periosteal autografts were obtained from the medial aspect of the proximal portion of the tibia, and perichondrial autografts were obtained from the sternum. Using arthroscopic visualization, each autograft was placed as a loose body into 1 tarsocrural joint in 6 young horses (2 to 4 years old). Horses were hand-walked daily, starting the day after surgery, for a total of 6 h/wk for 8 weeks. Eight weeks after autograft implantation, radiographs were taken of each tarsocrural joint and were interpreted with regard to mineralization in the transplanted autografts. Autografts were then surgically

Periosteal transection and periosteal stripping for correction of angular limb deformities in foals.

Valgus deformities were created in 6 pony foals by hemicircumferential transection of the periosteum and periosteal stripping (HCTP and PS) just proximally to the distal physis on the medial side of 1 radius (principal thoracic limb). The opposite thoracic limb served as a control. One month after this surgical procedure was done, the limbs were radiographed and the angle of deviation was determined. All horses developed a valgus deformity of the principal limb. In an effort to correct the acquired valgus deformity, the 2nd surgical procedure was performed--HCTP and PS on the lateral aspect of…

Age changes in the human frontozygomatic suture from 20 to 95 years.

The frontozygomatic suture of human cadaver material was examined by a combination of histologic, radiographic, and gross tecniques to determine the aging changes in the suture and the approximate age at which sutural fusion occurs. The sample consisted of sixty-One specimens of human beings ranging in age from 20 to 95 years. Observations were made on specimens at age intervals of 5 years. Since the frontozygomatic suture is bilateral, one suture from each specimens was used for radiographic and gross examination for synostosis, and the opposite side was subjected to histologic analysis. The

Operative Management of Lateral Ankle Instability: Examination Under Anesthesia, Ankle Arthroscopy and Stabilization Technique.

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains are common injuries that can result in chronic ankle instability. INDICATIONS: Indications for surgical managemen … ibula. The anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), and distal fibular periosteum are dissected off the fibula. Two 3.0-mm suture anchors are placed at the origin of the CFL ligament and the ATFL ligament, and previously dissected tissue is incorporated for repair. We reinforce the CFL and ATFL tissues with incorporation of the d …

Müller's muscle: a component of the peribulbar smooth muscle network.

PURPOSE: To examine Müller's muscle's horizontal extensions in relation to the peribulbar smooth muscle network. DESIGN: Observational anatomic study. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty postmortem orbits (10 right, 10 left) of 15 Asians (8 males, 7 females; age range at death, 61-93 years; mean age, 78.4 years) fixed in 10% buffered formalin. METHODS: After performing a full-thickness 360° incision of the periosteum around the circumference of the orbit, the periosteum was elevated and finally detached near to the orbital apex. Nerves, blood vessels, and the nasolacrimal duct arising from the orbital wal…

Periosteal releasing incision for successful coverage of augmented sites. A technical note.

The periosteal releasing incision (PRI) is very common in intraoral surgical procedures, especially when flap advancement is indicated, that is, when vertical or horizontal augmentations take place. This technical note describes the surgical skills for sufficient flap advancement. Complications due to improper PRI are also discussed.

Physiologic subperiosteal new bone formation: prevalence, distribution, and thickness in neonates and infants.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to determine the prevalence, distribution, and thickness of physiologic subperiosteal new bone formation in neonates and infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: High-detail postmortem skeletal radiologic surveys of 101 neonates and infants who had died from sudden infant death syndrome were reviewed. The average age at the time of death was 2.6 months (range, 2 weeks-8 months 2 weeks). The location, distribution, and thickness of subperiosteal new bone formation of the long bones were noted and measured with an ocular magnification system. RESULTS: subperios

Periosteal new bone formation in a canine neuropathic model of osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize, for the first time, periosteal new bone formation in a well-established canine model of accelerated osteoarthritis (OA) with features of neuropathic arthropathy. METHODS: Seven dogs underwent left L4-S1 dorsal root ganglionectomy (DRG), followed 3 weeks later by transection of the anterior cruciate ligament of the ipsilateral knee (ACLT). Eight weeks thereafter, a postmortem examination was performed to assess the severity of cartilage changes of OA and the formation of new bone on the distal femur and proximal tibia in the cruciate-deficient limb. RESULTS: As des

[Periosteal reaction in periarteritis nodosa in children].

Bone involvement has exceptionally been reported in children with periarteritis nodosa. A 5-year old girl was admitted to hospital for fever and arthralgias. Three months later, myalgias and painful subcutaneous nodules developed on the legs and ankles. Skin biopsy yielded a diagnosis of periarteritis nodosa. X-ray films revealed a bilateral periosteal reaction with images of laminae in the tibia and fibula. After a 4-year remission under corticosteroid therapy, the periosteal reaction persisted.

Autograft frontoplasty. A simple technique for correction of post-osteoplastic flap defects.

A rare but distressing complication of frontal embossment was managed after osteoplastic flap surgery. The technique is relatively simple and predictable, consisting of frontal bone autografts, bone paté, and Silastic sheeting. This technique may have potential application to other posttraumatic defects that require frontal contour restoration.

Development of nonunions in the rat fibula after removal of periosteal neural mechanoreceptors.

Periosteal proprioceptive nerve receptors may act as mechanoreceptors of long bones during adaptive remodeling after fracture. They may also contribute to the mechanisms of coordinated functional activity of fractured limbs and thus inhibit harmful overloading of fracture callus. The area of proprioceptive nerve receptors around the distal part of the rat fibula was stripped surgically, and a standard fracture of the fibular shaft was produced. Animals failed to unite their fractures and developed mainly atrophic nonunions. Atrophy of ununited fragments was due to osteoclastic bone resorption.
