Linking person perception and person knowledge in the human brain.

Neuroscience research has examined separately how we detect human agents on the basis of their face and body (person perception) and how we reason about their thoughts, traits or intentions (person knowledge). Neuroanatomically distinct networks have been associated with person perception and person knowledge, but it remains unknown how multiple features of a person (e.g. thin and kind) are linked to form a holistic identity representation. In this fMRI experiment, we investigated the hypothesis that when encountering another person specialised person perception circuits would be functionally

Cryptosporidiosis in hospital personnel. Evidence for person-to-person transmission.

An intern responsible for the care of a patient with chronic cryptosporidiosis developed acute diarrhea and serologic evidence of cryptosporidium infection. Sera from 26 hospital personnel exposed to the patient and 18 personnel with no exposure were examined with an indirect immunofluorescent antibody procedure for the presence of antibodies to Cryptosporidium. Eight (31%) exposed personnel--5 nurses, 2 house officers, and 1 student--had positive antibody titers (1:10 or more). The frequency of positivity in the nurse-housestaff-student group (8 of 18, 45%) was significantly greater (p less t

Reduced differentiation of personality in Alzheimer's disease-like dementia and associations between informant report of personality change and cognitive decline.

BackgroundPersonality changes are documented in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but research has focused almost exclusively on how much traits change rather than how the underlying personality structure reorganizes. Recent evidence from healthy aging shows that personality traits can de-differentiate over time, suggesting a decline of coherence of traits with age. Whether such personality de-differentiation also occurs in neurodegeneration and how personality and cognitive changes relate remains unknown.ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine structural changes in personality traits in individuals with…

Rolling in the Deep of Personality: Psychometric Properties of the Structured Interview of Personality Organization - Revised (STIPO-R) in Italy.

The STIPO-R (Structured Interview of Personality Organization - Revised) is an interview assessing personality organization across five major functional domains (identity, object relations, defenses, aggression, moral values). In contrast to a-theoretical models, the STIPO-R offers a theoretically grounded conceptualization of personality pathology based on object-relations theory. This study tests psychometric properties of the interview across mixed psychiatric patients (N = 180) and community individuals (N = 170) in Italy. Confirmatory Factor Analysis indicated that a bifactor model with f…

Improvement of personality functioning in patients with personality disorders: a comparative study of mentalization-based treatment versus non-manualized treatments.

OBJECTIVE: Among evidence-based treatments for personality disorder (PD), mentalization-based treatment (MBT) represents a manualized, long-term treatment. Both MBT and non-manualized psychotherapeutic treatments (NMT) are currently applied for patients with PDs in Norway. This clinical population is characterized by varying impairment of personality functioning (PF). Few have investigated how MBT and NMT are suited for the heterogeneity of personality problems presenting to health services and how they compare. This study aimed to investigate 1) characteristics of patients admitted to MBT ver…

Assessing the Czech Version of the Inventory of Personality Organization in Relation to Borderline Personality Disorder in the ICD-11.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the Czech version of the Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO-CZ) in relation to borderline personality disorder (BPD) as defined in the ICD-11 model for PDs and defensive functioning in BPDs. The IPO-CZ was used as a proxy measure of personality functioning (PF), although not fully identical to the conception of PF within the ICD-11 framework defined by the severity of self-other impairment. METHODS: The IPO-57, Borderline Personality Questionnaire, and Defense Style Questionnaire were administered to general population volunteers (n = 371) and mixed psy…

Assessment of personality disorders in adolescents - a clinical validity and utility study of the structured interview of personality organization (STIPO).

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of personality disorders (PD) in adolescence still poses a challenge. Early diagnosis and targeted intervention are called for, since patients with PD present with severe consequences in terms of psychosocial functioning and personal suffering including higher suicide risk. New guidelines advise semi-structured interviews for the dimensional assessment of personality functioning. METHODS: We included 136 patients aged 13 to 17.9 years with a categorical PD diagnosis and 35 healthy control (HC) adolescents to assess the applicability of the Structured Interview for Pe…

The incremental validity of level of personality functioning over borderline personality features in associations with early adolescent social reward processing.

More work is needed to establish the validity of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Acceptance of the AMPD as the primary model of personality disorder requires identifying neurocognitive validators of AMPD-defined personality functioning and demonstrating superiority of the AMPD over the traditional categorical model of personality disorder. It is also important to establish the utility of the AMPD in a developmental context given evidence that personality disorder emerges in adolescence. We assessed the …

Personality and COMT gene: molecular-genetic and epigenetic associations with NEO-PI-R personality domains and facets in monozygotic twins.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the relationship between MB-COMT DNA methylation (DNAm) and the personality traits outlined in the NEO-PI-R model through an epigenetic study of monozygotic twins. DNAm, a critical epigenetic mechanism, regulates gene expression and has been linked to various biological processes and disorders. By leveraging the genetic similarities of monozygotic twins, this research explores how epigenetic variations influenced by environmental factors correlate with personality differences. METHODS: The study utilized the Five-Factor Model (FFM) to categorize personality…

Development and Validation of Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory 2 (IDCP-2) Algorithms to Assess ICD-11 Personality Trait Domain Qualifiers.

With the advent of the new diagnostic model for personality disorders in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), researchers and practitioners in World Health Organization signatory countries are urged to implement it. This study aims to develop a brief, reliable, and valid scale for assessing maladaptive personality traits according to the ICD-11 model, using the item pool of the Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory (IDCP-2). Quantitative and qualitative criteria for item selection were applied to a sample of 251 Brazilian adults. As a result, the 25 …

Negative affect and pain catastrophizing link borderline personality disorder to pain: Replicating and extending the borderline personality disorder-pain association.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is commonly comorbid with chronic pain and associated with pain symptoms and interference. BPD features are associated with negative affect, which is associated with pain catastrophizing and/or pain anxiety, and finally pain severity or interference. We extended models of the BPD-pain associations in a chronic pain sample (N = 202), highlighting the role of negative affect (depression and anxiety) and pain catastrophizing, and exploring the potential benefit of emotional suppression/distraction as a component of these associations. BPD symptoms were positi…

Transgender and Gender Diverse Patients Are Diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder More Frequently Than Cisgender Patients Regardless of Personality Pathology.

PURPOSE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe form of psychopathology associated with a host of negative outcomes. Some literature suggests elevated prevalence among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) samples. Elevated BPD prevalence among TGD populations could be due to factors other than BPD-specific psychopathology. Studies of TGD samples typically omit assessment of BPD, making it difficult to understand elevated BPD diagnosis. The current study explored (1) differences in BPD diagnosis among TGD patients versus cisgender patients, (2) if differences were explained by BPD-sp…

The prevalence of borderline personality features and borderline personality disorder during the perinatal period: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a psychiatric disorder marked by severe affective instability and poor interpersonal functioning. Existing literature has highlighted that individuals with BPD are at greater risk for a wide range of adverse physiological and psychosocial outcomes in the perinatal period compared to perinatal individuals without BPD. However, to date, no systematic review has addressed the prevalence of BPD and borderline personality features (BPF) in pregnant and postpartum individuals. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by searching three databases (P…

Criteria A and B of the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) Capture Borderline Personality Features Among Adolescents.

The recent development of a dimensional view toward personality disorder opens up the field of personality research based on the constructs of personality functioning (Criterion A) and maladaptive personality traits (Criterion B) as core components of personality pathology. However, little is known about the roles of these aspects in relation to borderline personality features during adolescence. The current study aimed at exploring the associations of Criterion A and B and their contribution in predicting borderline personality features in adolescence. A sample of 568 adolescents aged 11-17 (…

The use of borderline personality disorder severity index-iv feedback in adjusting borderline personality disorder treatment: therapists and patients perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has emphasized the importance of therapists giving Routine Outcome Monitoring (ROM) feedback to their patients. It has been shown that several factors influence therapists' tendency to provide ROM feedback to their patients. METHODS: In this qualitative study, using a semi-structured interview followed by thematic analysis using Atlas.ti, we focused on experiences of therapists and patients with a disorder specific ROM instrument: the Borderline Personality Disorder Severity Index-IV (BPDSI-IV). Ten patients with a borderline personality disorder who had been in …

Parental Reports of Physically Self-Destructive Behavior in the Offspring of Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder and Other Personality Disorders.

The main aim of this article is to compare the prevalence of four forms of physically self-destructive behavior in the offspring of parents with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and compare them to the offspring of parents with other personality disorders (OPD). At the 4- and 6-year waves in a prospective study of the long-term course of BPD, participants were asked to report on the self-destructive behaviors of their children using the Childhood Self-Destructiveness Scale. A total of 68 parents were interviewed regarding 131 children, 104 of whom were offspring of parents with BPD (n = 5…
