Personality Traits in Panic Disorder Patients With and Without Comorbidities.

Panic disorder (PD) is often correlated with high neuroticism and low extraversion. This study aims to ascertain whether PD patients differ from healthy controls in regard to personality traits and determine if these traits are correlated with comorbid disorders, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Personality traits of 69 PD patients and 42 controls were compared using the Maudsley Personality Inventory. In PD patients, comorbidities, anxiety, and depression symptoms were also evaluated. PD patients showed higher neuroticism and lower extraversion compared with healthy controls. Patients withou…

Phobic, panic, and major depressive disorders and the five-factor model of personality.

This study investigated five-factor model personality traits in anxiety (simple phobia, social phobia, agoraphobia, and panic disorder) and major depressive disorders in a population-based sample. In the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area Follow-up Study, psychiatrists administered the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry to 333 adult subjects who also completed the Revised NEO Personality Inventory. All of the disorders except simple phobia were associated with high neuroticism. Social phobia and agoraphobia were associated with low extraversion. In addition, lower-order f…

Psychological test characteristics of depressed and panic patients.

This study compared the psychological test performance of patients with major depression (MD) (n = 23), patients with panic disorder (PD) (n = 20), and normal subjects (n = 24). Results indicated that scores of normal subjects were significantly less pathological than those of both patient groups on almost all psychological test scales, but that the test performance of the two patient groups did not differ. The only difference between the two patient groups was on the level of self-reported and observer-rated depression. Both patient groups exhibited significant personality pathology, and the

Exploring experience of family relations by patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa using a projective family test.

Elements of family dynamics have been shown to be related to onset, course, as well as prognosis of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The goal was to explore the experience of family relations in a group of patients with eating disorders using a projective family test. The Patient group (anorexia=21, bulimia=16), as well as a healthy Control group, were given a projective family test, the Eating Disorder Inventory-2, as well as Karolinska Scales of Personality. The Patient group expressed more discord within the family picture than the Control group, such as cold and loveless relationships

Denial of hostility and psychopathology in the evaluation of child molestation.

We administered the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (Buss & Durkee, 1957) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (Hathaway & McKinley, 1967) to 82 alleged child molesters. Denial of hostility was significantly associated both with minimization of psychopathology and with denial of charges of sex offense. No subjects who denied charges acknowledged psychopathology, whereas one third of admitters acknowledged psychopathology. Our results suggest that alleged sex offenders may show complex patterns of impression management and that self-report hostility inventories are highly vulnera…

Parental bonding and eating psychopathology in bulimia nervosa: personality traits as possible mediators.

AIMS: The relationship between eating disorders, attachment, personality traits and eating psychopathology remains unexplored. METHODS: 154 bulimic subjects and 154 healthy controls were compared using Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Multiple regression analysis tested the mediation of personality traits between parenting and eating psychopathology

Anger expression in eating disorders: clinical, psychopathological and personality correlates.

The goals of the study were to compare anger expressions in individuals with eating disorders and healthy controls, and to explore the relation among eating disorder symptoms, comorbid psychopathology, personality traits, and impulsive behaviours. Different personality profiles in patients with cluster headache: a data-driven approach.

INTRODUCTION: Cluster headache (CH) is usually comorbid to mood spectrum disorders, but the psychopathological aspects are poorly explored. We aimed at identifying discrete profiles of personality traits and their association with clinical features. METHODS: Based on the personality scales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III, principal component analysis (PCA) identified psychological patterns of functioning of 56 CH patients. PCA outcomes were used for hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) for sub-groups classification. RESULTS: Eighty-seven percent of patients had personality dys

Affective temperaments show stronger association with infertility treatment success compared to somatic factors, highlighting the role of personality focused interventions.

Infertility has a multifactorial background, where, besides somatic factors, psychological contributors also play a role in development and outcome. While affective temperaments have been associated with development, course, and outcome as well as treatment success in various somatic conditions, their association with infertility and its treatment has not been investigated so far. The purpose of our retrospective cohort study was to evaluate the influence of affective temperaments on fertility treatment outcomes. Among 578 women who underwent infertility treatment in an Assisted Reproduction C

Associations between plasma glucose and DSM-III-R cluster B personality traits in psychiatric outpatients.

Associations between personality traits, measured with the Karolinska Scales of Personality, the Impulsiveness subscale from the Impulsiveness, Venturesomeness and Empathy (IVE) Inventory, and with self-assessed personality traits and disorders (SCID-II Screen Questionnaire), and plasma insulin, glucagon and glucose, respectively, were explored in a sample of 101 psychiatric outpatients of both sexes. No relationships between the peptide hormones and personality measures were found. However, fasting glucose values, which were all essentially within the normal biological variation, were signifi

The Dimensional Conceptualization of Personality Disorders: Personality Organization, Personality Functioning, and Personality Disorders.

Over the past several decades, significant criticism of the categorical classification system for personality disorders has highlighted the need to transition to a dimensional classification system. This study reviewed key issues involved in the potential conversion of the diagnostic system of personality disorders from a categorical to a dimensional model. The result suggests that Kernberg's concept of personality organization can be used to indicate the overall severity of personality pathology.

Relative Effects of Sexual Assault and Temperament Traits on Cognitive Characteristics of Histrionic Personality Disorder.

Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is a common and problematic form of personality pathology involving excessive attention-seeking, often through overly sexualized means. Much of the research on HPD has involved the association between HPD characteristics and basic temperament traits. Given the sometimes hypersexualized presentation of HPD, another potential influence on HPD characteristics may be exposure to sexual assault. However, there is little research on the association between sexual assault and HPD in general or with respect to temperament traits in particular. In this study, we ex

The diagnostic and predictive potential of personality traits and coping styles in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a global public health concern that is notably underdiagnosed and undertreated due to its complexity and subjective diagnostic methods. A holistic diagnostic procedure, which sufficiently considers all possible contributors to MDD symptoms, would improve MDD diagnosis and treatment. This study aims to explore whether personality and coping styles can predict MDD status and differentiate between depressed patients and healthy individuals. METHODS: Seventy healthy controls (N = 54 females) were matched to 70 MDD patients for age, sex, ethnicity, an
