Temperature-dependent Raman scattering and differential scanning calorimetry were applied to the study of the hybrid organic-inorganic azide-perovskite [(CH3)4N][Cd(N3)3], a compound with multiple structural phase transitions as a function of temperature. A significant entropy variation was observed associated to such phase transitions, |∆S| ~ 62.09 J·kg-1 K-1, together with both a positive high barocaloric (BC) coefficient |δTt/δP| ~ 12.39 K kbar-1 and an inverse barocaloric (BC) coefficient |δTt/δP| ~ -6.52 kbar-1, features that render this compound interesting for barocaloric applications.

We show that electronic phase transitions in zinc-blende semimetals with quadratic band touching (QBT) at the center of the Brillouin zone, like GaBi, InBi, or HgTe, can occur exclusively due to a change of the electronic temperature without the need to involve structural transformations or electron-phonon coupling. The commonly used Kohn-Sham density-functional methods based on local and semilocal density functionals employing the local density approximation (LDA) or generalized gradient approximations (GGAs), however, are not capable of describing such phenomena because they lack an intrinsi

Development of optoelectronic technologies based on quantum dots depends on measuring, optimizing, and ultimately predicting charge carrier dynamics in the nanocrystal. In such systems, size inhomogeneity and the photoexcited population distribution among various excitonic states have distinct effects on electron and hole relaxation, which are difficult to distinguish spectroscopically. Two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy can help to untangle these effects by resolving excitation energy and subsequent nonlinear response in a single experiment. Using a filament-generated continuum as a pump

The emission lineshape of the B850 band in the light harvesting complex 2 of purple bacteria is calculated by extending the approach of 2nd order time-nonlocal quantum master equation [S. Jang and R. J. Silbey, J. Chem. Phys. 118, 9312 (2003)]. The initial condition for the emission process corresponds to the stationary excited state density where exciton states are entangled with the bath modes in equilibrium. This exciton-bath coupling, which is not diagonal in either site excitation or exciton basis, results in a new inhomogeneous term that is absent in the expression for the absorption lin

CONTEXT: Spinel chalcogenides of the type CaX₂Se₄ (X = Mn, V) represent a class of transition-metal compounds in which magnetic ordering, electronic structure, and lattice dynamics are strongly interrelated, making them attractive for spin-dependent transport and thermoelectric applications. In particular, the coexistence of partially filled transition-metal 3d states and chalcogen p states provides a favorable platform for exchange-driven spin polarization and tunable carrier transport. In this study, a comprehensive first-principles investigation based on density functional theory is carried

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting provides a sustainable pathway for hydrogen production, yet achieving efficient and stable photoanodes continues to be a formidable obstacle. Herein, a core-shell CuS@CdS-Pt photoanode is constructed via in situ hydrothermal self-assembly followed by Pt surface modification. The Z-scheme heterojunction between CdS and CuS generates the built-in electric field (IEF), stimulating spatial separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs while preserving strong redox capability. Building on this, a synergistic dual-thermal effect is proposed and demonstra

Precise orientation of symmetry-mismatched epilayers on van der Waals (vdW) substrates via heteroepitaxy has commonly been achieved through surface treatment processes to accommodate weak interlayer registry and bonding strength, thereby limiting the range of material combinations for heterostructure design. In this study, we investigate the influence of lattice instabilities in a structurally modulated vdW TaCo2Te2 substrate on the growth and alignment of a symmetry-mismatched bulk CoxTey epilayer using in situ heating in a transmission electron microscope (TEM). We show that a Peierls-like l

Suppression of excited-state non-radiative recombination is pivotal for overcoming efficiency bottleneck in organic optoelectronics. However, in film, mechanism of aggregates' excited-state non-radiative recombination and how to suppress its rate (knr) remain unclear. Here, taking classical Y6-type acceptors as an example, we investigate how change in their molecular packing modes impacts aggregates' excited-state properties and knr. We find that knr decreases with an increased population of the compact EECC (end-end and core-core) packing mode. Our results reveal that the EECC mode enhances t

In this study, we present a comprehensive first-principles investigation of the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of titanium pentachalcogenide structures in both two-dimensional (2D) and one-dimensional (1D) nanochain (NC) forms. Total energy and geometry optimizations reveal that the 2D TiX5(X = Se, Te) structures exhibit in-plane anisotropy arising from the trigonal prismatic TiX3units interconnected via the chalcogenide chains. Phonon band dispersions and elastic tensor elements confirm the dynamical and mechanical stability of the 2D layers, respectively. Electronically,

Lead-free metal halides with efficient broadband emission and multifunctional optical properties are highly desirable for next-generation optoelectronic and sensing applications. Herein, we report a Sb3+-doped (TEA)2SnCl6 zero-dimensional (0D) metal halide that exhibits highly efficient broadband emission and refractive index sensing capability. By systematically tuning the Sb3+ doping concentration, the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is significantly enhanced from nearly non-emissive to a maximum value of 84.4%. Solution-processed halide perovskites (HPs) have demonstrated exceptional optoelectronic performance and a range of unusual physical properties. Many of their intriguing characteristics can be attributed to the interactions among the dynamic polar lattice, charge carriers, and point defects. Here, microphotoluminescence (μPL) spectroscopy is used to investigate the spectral diffusion (SD) of ultrasharp emission lines (<500 μeV at 4 K) associated with defect states in the prototypical 3D perovskite MAPbI3. Temporal spectral fluctuations are typically considered a hallmark of single nano-object

Multiphase interface engineering provides an effective strategy for regulating interfacial charge transfer and improving light-driven catalytic energy conversion. Here, Te-incorporated Bi4O4SeCl2 hybrid ceramics containing retained BiOCl and β-Bi2O3 phases together with Te-induced conductive Bi2Te3 nanophases are constructed to generate abundant coherent and semi-coherent interfaces. These multiphase interfaces effectively reconstruct the electronic structure and microstructure of the Bi4O4SeCl2 matrix, leading to optimized carrier transport pathways, broadened visible-NIR absorption, and impr

Recently, chalcogenide perovskites (CPs) have come to the forefront as a promising lead-free alternative for solar cell devices due to their enhanced stability, eco-friendly elemental composition, and potential for more economical, scalable manufacturing. However, there are few studies on the structural, electronic, optical, mechanical, and phonon characteristics of BaXS3 (X = Zr, Hf) for photovoltaic applications. In this regard, our detailed DFT-based study reveals that BaXS3 (X = Zr, Hf) exhibits a direct band gap and possesses anisotropic charge-carrier transport with lower effective mass.

Copper-based hybrid halides have attracted growing interest as tunable luminescent materials with diverse coordination architectures. Herein, a series of copper bromide-based hybrids were synthesized featuring distinct architectures: (MEP)(Cu2Br4)0.5 (M1), (MEP)(Cu4Br6)0.5 (M2), and (MEP)8(Cu4Br6)4 (M3, MEP = Methyltriphenylphosphonium). All compounds exhibit broad-band emissions at room temperature, spanning green to orange. Systematic structural and photophysical analyses demonstrate that variations in Cu-Br coordination geometry, cluster distortion, and crystal packing critically regulate e

Flexible electronic materials are essential for the development of next-generation devices that maintain reliable performance under mechanical deformation such as bending and stretching. In this work, we propose a novel monolayer compound, P4/mmm LaBr2 (denoted as "ML-P4/mmm-LaBr2"), discovered via high-pressure crystal structure prediction and characterized by first-principles and machine learning study, as a promising candidate for flexible electronics. The I4/mmm LaBr2 parent phase is thermodynamically stable at ambient pressure, and its monolayer can be exfoliated with a cleavage energy co

Two-dimensional (2D) materials and their van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have been considered promising for application as gas detecting devices owing to their distinct physical and chemical characteristics. In this work, we theoretically investigated Al2CO/SiC heterostructure using semiconductor SiC as a substrate by density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore its potential for outstanding performance. Our research focused on the comparative analysis of the adsorption properties of six gas molecules (H2, NH3, SO2, NO, O2, and H2O) with SiC and its heterostructure. The structu

In this study, we investigate how modulating organic spacers in perovskites influences their X-ray detection performance and reveal the mechanism of low-dose detection with high sensitivity using femtosecond-transient absorption spectroscopy (fs-TAS). Particularly, we employ N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediammonium (TMPDA) and N,N-dimethylphenylene-p-diammonium (DPDA) as organic spacers to synthesize 2D perovskite single crystals (SCs). We find that DPDA-based SCs exhibit reduced interplanar spacing between inorganic layers, leading to increased lattice packing. Density functional theory
