Decision Activity in Parietal Cortex - Leader or Follower?

Katz and colleagues demonstrate that inactivating the primate lateral intraparietal area (LIP) spares visual motion decisions, even though these same decisions strongly modulate LIP neurons. This work is the latest addition to an intense effort spanning sensory modalities, animals, and techniques to understand which structures comprise the circuits responsible for interpreting sensory signals to make decisions.

The contrast sensitivity function of the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola.

The detection of visual motion and its direction is a fundamental task faced by several visual systems. The motion detection system of insects has been widely studied with the majority of studies focussing on flies and bees. Here we characterize the contrast sensitivity of motion detection in the praying mantis Sphodromantis lineola, an ambush predator that stays stationary for long periods of time while preying on fast-moving prey. In this, its visual behaviour differs from previously studied insects and we might therefore expect its motion detection system to differ from theirs. To investiga

Fixation-off sensitivity in idiopathic childhood occipital epilepsy of Gastaut.

A 7-year-old boy presented with episodic blindness for the last 2 months with occipital paroxysms and fixation-off sensitivity on electroencephalography (EEG). The clinico-EEG features were suggestive of idiopathic childhood occipital epilepsy of Gastaut. The interesting phenomenon of fixation-off sensitivity is discussed.

Failure to learn a new spatial format in children with developmental dyslexia.

A general problem in studying children with developmental dyslexia is how to separate inefficiency in learning on the one hand from exposure to written texts on the other. To evaluate dyslexic children's learning abilities with graphemic materials, we tested their improvement in a condition that minimized previous experience with words (i.e., "novel words") and with the standard, horizontal spatial letter array (i.e., a non-canonical "zigzag" format). We selected five pairs of children with dyslexia and (younger) typically developing readers matched for reading speed and accuracy in these spec

On using very high temporal frequencies to isolate magnocellular contributions to psychophysical tasks.

In connection with dyslexia several authors have sought to employ stimuli of very high temporal frequency to isolate magnocellular contributions to visual tasks. It is here pointed out that considerable evidence indicate that the ability to see the very highest temporal frequencies is limited by cortical mechanisms. This suggests that variations and abnormalities in this ability may reflect cortical factors rather than magnocellular ones. It is therefore difficult to rely upon very high temporal frequency stimuli to isolate contributions from the magnocellular system.

Development of retinal projections and response to photic input in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of New Zealand White Rabbits.

In rabbit pups, nursing by the mother is the prevailing entraining signal for their circadian rhythms during at least the first two weeks of life. Therefore, they are considered a natural model of food anticipatory activity. However, the photic entrainment of the circadian system in rabbit pups during this developmental stage is not well understood. The present study examined the retinal projections to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and the functional responses of the SCN to light exposure. Using the anterograde tracer cholera toxin-B, we examined the retinal projections to the SCN at postn

Temporal production signals in parietal cortex.

We often perform movements and actions on the basis of internal motivations and without any explicit instructions or cues. One common example of such behaviors is our ability to initiate movements solely on the basis of an internally generated sense of the passage of time. In order to isolate the neuronal signals responsible for such timed behaviors, we devised a task that requires nonhuman primates to move their eyes consistently at regular time intervals in the absence of any external stimulus events and without an immediate expectation of reward. Despite the lack of sensory information, we

Use of speed cues in the detection of moving objects by moving observers.

When an observer moves through an environment containing stationary and moving objects, he or she must be able to determine which objects are moving relative to the others in order to navigate successfully and avoid collisions. We investigated whether image speed can be used as a cue to detect a moving object in the scene. Our results show that image speed can be used to detect moving objects as long as the object is moving sufficiently faster or slower than it would if it were part of the stationary scene.

A looming-sensitive pathway responds to changes in the trajectory of object motion.

Two identified locust neurons, the lobula giant movement detector (LGMD) and its postsynaptic partner, the descending contralateral movement detector (DCMD), constitute one motion-sensitive pathway in the visual system that responds preferentially to objects that approach on a direct collision course and are implicated in collision-avoidance behavior. Previously described responses to the approach of paired objects and approaches at different time intervals (Guest BB, Gray JR. J Neurophysiol 95: 1428-1441, 2006) suggest that this pathway may also be affected by more complicated movements in th

Current electrophysiology in ophthalmology: a review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize current technique, indications, and pitfalls of electrophysiologic testing used in ophthalmology. RECENT FINDINGS: Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) may be useful as an objective measurement of refractive error in complicated patients. VEP P100 latency was found superior to color vision and visual field in early stages of hydroxychloroquine maculopathy. VEP results can be predictive of visual recovery in traumatic optic neuropathy. Multifocal electroretinogram (ERG) or VEP can provide an objective assessment of visual field defects not yet present on automated pe

Dynamic prototypicality effects in visual search.

In recent studies, researchers have discovered a larger neural activation for stimuli that are more extreme exemplars of their stimulus class, compared with stimuli that are more prototypical. This has been shown for faces as well as for familiar and novel shape classes. We used a visual search task to look for a behavioral correlate of these findings regarding both simple geometrical shapes and more complex, novel shape classes. The latter stimulus set enabled us to control for the physical properties of the shapes, establishing that the effects are solely due to the positions of the particul

Flexible visual processing of spatial relationships.

Visual processing breaks the world into parts and objects, allowing us not only to examine the pieces individually, but also to perceive the relationships among them. There is work exploring how we perceive spatial relationships within structures with existing representations, such as faces, common objects, or prototypical scenes. But strikingly, there is little work on the perceptual mechanisms that allow us to flexibly represent arbitrary spatial relationships, e.g., between objects in a novel room, or the elements within a map, graph or diagram. We describe two classes of mechanism that mig

Sensitivity of human visual cortical area V6 to stereoscopic depth gradients associated with self-motion.

The principal visual cue to self-motion (egomotion) is optic flow, which is specified in terms of local 2D velocities in the retinal image without reference to depth cues. However, in general, points near the center of expansion of natural flow fields are distant, whereas those in the periphery are closer, creating gradients of horizontal binocular disparity. To assess whether the brain combines disparity gradients with optic flow when encoding egomotion, stereoscopic gradients were applied to expanding dot patterns presented to observers during functional MRI scanning. The gradients were radi

Migraine and motion sickness independently contribute to visual discomfort.

The objective of this study was to evaluate, in patients with migraine and healthy volunteers, with and without a history of motion sickness, the degree of discomfort elicited by drifting striped patterns. Eighteen healthy volunteers (HV) and 30 migraine patients participated in the study. Discomfort was greater in migraine patients than in HV, and in individuals with a history of motion sickness than in those without, but the effect of history of migraine was independent of history of motion sickness. Generalized Estimating Equations models for binary correlated data revealed that these diffe

Visual attention in children with migraine: a controlled comparative study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the visual attention of children with migraine and compare it with a control group. Thirty migrainous children and 30 controls without headache were subjected to a visual attention assessment with Trail Making Tests (TMT) A/B, Letter Cancellation Test, and the Brazilian computerized test Visual Attention Test, third edition. The migraine group was evaluated after 2 days without headache. The migraine group had an inferior performance compared with the control group on TMT A (P = 0.03) and B (P = 0.001), and more errors on tasks 1 (P = 0.032) and 2 (P = 0.0

Mislocalization of flashed and stationary visual stimuli after adaptation of reactive and scanning saccades.

When we look around and register the location of visual objects, our oculomotor system continuously prepares targets for saccadic eye movements. The preparation of saccade targets may be directly involved in the perception of object location because modification of saccade amplitude by saccade adaptation leads to a distortion of the visual localization of briefly flashed spatial probes. Here, we investigated effects of adaptation on the localization of continuously visible objects. We compared adaptation-induced mislocalization of probes that were present for 20 ms during the saccade preparati

Dynamic distortion of visual position representation around moving objects.

The relative visual positions of briefly flashed stimuli are systematically modified in the presence of motion signals (R. Nijhawan, 2002; D. Whitney, 2002). Previously, we investigated the two-dimensional distortion of relative-position representations between moving and flashed stimuli. The results showed that the perceived position of a flash is not uniformly displaced but shifted toward a single convergent point back along the trajectory of a moving object (K. Watanabe & K. Yokoi, 2006, 2007). In the present study, we examined the temporal dynamics of the anisotropic distortion of visual p

Contrast invariance in the human lateral occipital complex depends on attention.

The human visual system has a remarkable ability to successfully operate under a variety of challenging viewing conditions. For example, our object-recognition capabilities are largely unaffected by low-contrast (e.g., foggy) environments. The basis for this ability appears to be reflected in the neural responses in higher cortical visual areas that have been characterized as being invariant to changes in luminance contrast: neurons in these areas respond nearly equally to low-contrast as compared to high-contrast stimuli. This response pattern is fundamentally different than that observed in

Visual field maps and stimulus selectivity in human ventral occipital cortex.

Human visual cortex is organized into distinct visual field maps whose locations and properties provide important information about visual computations. There are two conflicting models of the organization and computational role of ventral occipital visual field maps. We report new functional MRI measurements that test these models. We also present the first coordinated measurements of visual field maps and stimulus responsivity to color, objects and faces in ventral occipital cortex. These measurements support a model that includes a hemifield map, hV4, adjacent to the central field represent

The neural basis of the behavioral face-inversion effect.

Two of the most robust markers for "special" face processing are the behavioral face-inversion effect (FIE)-the disproportionate drop in recognition of upside-down (inverted) stimuli relative to upright faces-and the face-selective fMRI response in the fusiform face area (FFA). However, the relationship between these two face-selective markers is unknown. Here we report that the behavioral FIE is closely associated with the fMRI response in the FFA, but not in other face-selective or object-selective regions. The FFA and the face-selective region in the superior temporal sulcus (f_STS), but no
