In recent years, hepatitis B core protein virus-like particle (HBc VLP) is an impressive biomaterial, which has attracted considerable attention due to favorable properties such as structural stability, high uptake efficiency, and biocompatibility in biomedical applications. Heretofore, only a few attempts have been made to apply it in physical, chemical, and biological therapy for cancer. In this study, a tumor-targeting RGD-HBc VLP is first fabricated through genetic engineering. For image-guided cancer phototherapy, indocyanine green (ICG) is loaded into RGD-HBc VLP via a disassembly/reasse

The purpose of this study was to optimize the configuration of a photoacoustic endoscope (PAE) for prostate cancer detection and therapy monitoring. The placement of optical fiber bundles and ultrasound detectors was chosen to maximize the photoacoustic imaging penetration depth. We performed both theoretical calculations and simulations of this optimized PAE configuration on a prostate-sized phantom containing tumor and various photosensitizer concentrations. The optimized configuration of PAE with transurethral light delivery simultaneously increases the imaging penetration depth and improve

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) relies on the cellular toxicity of an exogenous porphyrin that is activated by light rays. Its specificity depends on its cellular uptake, which is typically high in cells with a high metabolism, such as cancer cells and several microbial pathogens. Both the diffusion of the substrate and the penetration of the light in the tissue limit its efficiency to the first few millimeters of the skin. This explains why this technique is used for the treatment of superficial skin cancers (actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinomas), but also for selected skin inflammatory dis

Pathological corneal neovascularization is an important reason of visual impairment. Research outcomes showed that angiogenesis mechanism is similar in all the tissues of the body and photodynamic therapy demonstrate a useful effect in blocking tumor and choroidal neovascularization. This method is currently being tried for the treatment of corneal neovascularization. This paper will review the research status of photodynamic therapy in corneal neovascularization using various photosensitizers.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of actinic keratosis has been shown to be effective and safe in large clinical trials published in the last 5 years. However, evidence has since emerged that raises questions or that introduces new issues, such as the management of field cancerization, fluorescence diagnosis and results in transplant recipients. There also remains a need for more studies comparing PDT to additional treatments. We review the literature on these new topics in PDT.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) consists of a chemical reaction activated by light energy that is used to selectively destroy tissue. The reaction requires a photosensitizer in the target tissue, a light source and oxygen. The most extensively studied photosensitizing agents for PDT are 5-aminolevulinic acid for the treatment of actinic keratosis and methyl-aminolevulinate, which has been approved for the treatment of actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma and Bowen's disease. The light sources used in photodynamic therapy should emit light at wavelengths within the absorption spectrum of the phot

Actinic cheilitis is a subtype of actinic keratosis that mainly affects the lower lip and has a higher risk of malignant transformation. Its location on the labial mucosa influences the therapeutic approach. Vermilionectomy requires local or general anesthetic and is associated with a risk of an unsightly scar, and the treatment with 5-fluorouracil or imiquimod lasts for several weeks and the inflammatory reaction can be very intense. A number of authors have used photodynamic therapy as an alternative to the usual treatments. We present 3 patients with histologically confirmed actinic cheilit

CLINICAL CASE: A 45-year-old male referred with a scotoma in the left eye of 2 months' evolution. A peripapillary tumor was found, with a basal diameter of 7 mm and thickness 3.4 mm. It was diagnosed as a circumscribed choroidal hemangioma. It was decided to treat the patient using photodynamic therapy. After 4 sessions and 17 months follow-up, the patient remained asymptomatic and visual acuity was stable. There was evidence of subretinal fibrosis and no subretinal fluid was found.
DISCUSSION: Photodynamic therapy is a good option for the treatment of circumscribed choroidal hemangioma given

Acne vulgaris can represent a therapeutic challenge in terms of managing ongoing symptoms and preventing scar formation. While the copious variations of available treatments address milder forms of the disease, until recently, therapies for resistant or moderate-to-severe forms were limited to systemic agents that were accompanied by potentially severe side-effects. With the addition of lasers, light sources, and aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) therapies, dermatologists may now have viable new alternatives for treating all grades of acne severity that circumvent the negative

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been used in the treatment of a variety of benign and malignant cutaneous conditions. More recently, it has been used to enhance the results of skin rejuvenation procedures. The purpose of this article is to review the current practical applications of PDT in a cosmetic practice.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has evolved since its inception at the beginning of the 20th century, when it was defined as an oxygen-dependent reaction between a photosensitizing dye and light. Photosensitizers and light sources have since been continually optimized for distinct applications and tissues. Systemic porphyrins, such as hematoporphyrin, were the first photosensitizers to be used, mostly to treat tumors. The first light sources used were broad-band, noncoherent lights, such as quartz, xenon, tungsten, or halogen lamps. The wavelengths of light chosen were based upon the absorption spe

Barrett's oesophagus is a complication of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and should be considered as a major risk factor for the development of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus. Each and every patient with Barrett's oesophagus should be enrolled in a endoscopic surveillance program. During the last years, the endoscopic treatment of high grade dysplasia or intramucosal adenocarcinoma (by mucosectomy) has been reported to be successful in relatively large series of patients. This therapeutic option is particularly useful for patients with a high operative risk. It can be applied for lesions

Barrett's oesophagus develops as a consequence of severe gastro-oesophageal reflux. The importance of Barrett's oesophagus lies in the small risk of developing high-grade dysplasia and subsequent adenocarcinoma. Because of poor treatment results in patients with advanced adenocarcinoma, surveillance of patients with Barrett's oesophagus for the development of dysplasia, although not uncontroversial, is widely practised in the gastroenterological community. The aim of surveillance is to detect adenocarcinoma in an early stadium where surgical cure is possible. In recent years several endoscopic

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a clinically approved treatment for the ocular condition age-related macular degeneration, and certain types of cancer. PDT is also under investigation for other ocular, as well as, immune-mediated and cardiovascular indications. PDT is a two step procedure. In the first step, the photosensitizer, usually a porphyrin derivative, is administered and taken up by cells. The second step involves activation of the photosensitizer with a specific wavelength of visible light. Exposure to light of an activating wavelength generates reactive oxygen species within cells con
