Piebaldism, Waardenburg's syndrome, and related disorders. "Neural crest depigmentation syndromes"?

The striking parallel between the melanin pigmentary abnormalities of the hair and skin in piebaldism, Waardenburg's syndrome, piebaldism with deafness, and piebaldism or Waardenburg's syndrome with aganglionosis of the gut suggests that all these disorders belong to the same category. At present, the most logical way to link these syndromes is to consider them the results of defective development of the neural crest. The reason that in certain circumstances only melanoblasts are affected whereas in other situations other neural crest derivatives also are involved is not yet clear. In addition

[Cutis "trunci variata." A new genetic dermatosis].

A maculo-hypochromic condition is not rarely seen in brown-skinned adolescents and young adults, that may spread over the skin of the trunk, specially the lumbar, sacral and epigastric regions assuming a considerable psychologic important. It is generally confused with pityriasis versicolor or its hypochromic sequelae. The histologic and genetic study of the condition remains undone. It is provisionally considered among genodermatoses and the name cutis trunci variata is being proposed for it.

Histochemistry of B663 pigmentation: ceroid-like pigmentation in macrophages.

Histochemical studies were made of pigmented cutaneous lesions from three cases of lepromatous leprosy treated with B663 to determine the nature and histogenesis of the brown pigmentation which develops as a side effect of the drug. One case of DDS-treated leprosy and four cases of untreated leprosy were also investigated histochemically as controls. The brown pigmentation of the skin is due to deposition of a ceroid-like substance in the macrophages, which is a yellowish-brown, acid-fast lipid pigment. It is insoluble in fat solvents and accepts lipid dyes even after lipid extraction by fat s

Elejalde syndrome: clinical and histopathological findings in an Egyptian male.

Elejalde syndrome is a rare disorder. An Egyptian male patient with Elejalde syndrome is presented. He had silvery hair since birth, generalized hypopigmentation, severe primary central nervous system dysfunction, and normal hematological and immunologic profiles. Magnetic resonance of the brain revealed prominent cerebellar atrophy with mild fronto-parietal cortical atrophic changes. Microscopic analysis of his hair showed melanin clumps irregularly distributed along the hair shafts, and a skin biopsy showed increased pigmentation in the basal melanocytes. The differential diagnosis of silver

Primary bilateral adrenal nodular disease with Cushing's syndrome: varying aetiology.

Primary adrenal disorders contribute 20%â€"30% of patients with endogenous Cushing's syndrome. Most of the primary adrenal diseases are unilateral and include adenoma and adrenocortical carcinoma, whereas bilateral adrenal lesions are uncommon and include primary pigmented nodular adrenocortical disease, primary bilateral macronodular adrenocortical hyperplasia, isolated micronodular adrenocortical disease, bilateral adenomas or carcinomas, and rarely pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone-dependent adrenal nodular disease. Cyclic adenosine monophosphate-dependent protein kinase A signalling is

Ochronosis and lumbar disc herniation.

Alkaptonuria is a rare, autosomal recessive metabolic disorder in which the homogentisic acid oxidase activity is absent. Its incidence is as low as 0.001%. Ochronosis is the pigmentation of connective tissues and this pigmentation leads to degenerative changes in alkaptonuric patients. Alkaptonuria most prominently involves the lumbar region, but lumbar disc herniation as the presenting feature of alkaptonuria is not common. Only a few patients required surgical intervention. Herewith we report an alkaptonuric patient, who was operated on for lumbar disc herniation. His discectomy material wa

Congenital Melanotic Macule of the Tongue: Report of Two Cases and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Congenital melanotic macule of the tongue (CMMT) has been described as a distinct entity, despite its unknown etiology. However, the diagnosis and management of affected newborns may challenge clinicians and pediatric dentists. METHODS: We document here the clinicopathological findings of two additional cases of CMMT. A literature review of CMMT reports identified across PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus was also conducted. RESULTS: The patients, 2- and 4 month-old Venezuelan boys, respectively, presented at birth with a single or multiple dark-brown-pigmented macule exc

Melanocyte colonization and pigmentation of breast carcinoma: A case report.

Pigmented mammary Paget disease is a rare variant of mammary Paget disease that is often clinically misdiagnosed as a melanocytic lesion of the skin or nipple-areolar complex. Careful morphological assessment, along with the performance of adequate immunohistochemical stains, will help in achieving the right diagnosis and avoiding misdiagnosis of the entity as malignant melanoma. We report a rare case of pigmented mammary Paget disease with concomitant colonization of the underlying invasive ductal carcinoma by melanocytes mimicking melanoma.

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling in melanocyte pigmentation and melanomagenesis.

The second messenger cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) regulates numerous functions in both benign melanocytes and melanoma cells. cAMP is generated from two distinct sources, transmembrane and soluble adenylyl cyclases (tmAC and sAC, respectively), and is degraded by a family of proteins called phosphodiesterases (PDEs). cAMP signaling can be regulated in many different ways and can lead to varied effects in melanocytes. It was recently revealed that distinct cAMP signaling pathways regulate pigmentation by either altering pigment gene expression or the pH of melanosomes. In the context o

Roles of inflammation factors in melanogenesis (Review).

The occurrence of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation after inflammation is a common condition in dermatology and cosmetology. Since the exact mechanism of its occurrence is not yet known, prevention and treatment are troublesome. Previous studies have confirmed that α‑melanocyte‑stimulating hormone, stem cell factor and other factors can promote melanogenesis‑related gene expression through the activation of signaling pathways. Recent studies have revealed that a variety of inflammatory mediators can also participate in the regulation of melanogenesis in melanocytes. In this review, we summ
