The impact of hearing loss on tone discrimination: An fMRI study.

Hearing deprivation induces structural and functional reorganization in the brain, which compromises an individual's language processing capacity. As a tonal language, Mandarin Chinese requires fine-grained auditory processing for lexical tone discrimination. Nevertheless, the neural mechanisms through which hearing loss influences this process remain poorly understood. This study utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine behavioral performance and neural activation patterns during Mandarin tone discrimination tasks in individuals with early-onset deafness. Participants

[Laser vibrometry. A middle ear and cochlear analyzer for noninvasive studies of middle and inner ear function disorders].

A complete battery of audiometric methods is required for the differential diagnosis of different hearing disabilities (including puretone audiometry, impedance, stapes reflex, speech audiometry, brainstam evoked response audiometry, otoacoustic emissions, etc.). In many cases, a comprehensive diagnosis is not possible. Here we describe a new technique based on a laser-Doppler vibrometer that has the potential for non-invasive diagnosis not only middle ear disease but also cochlear pathologies. Disturbance of cochlear function can be ascertained because the input impedance of the cochlea acts

Diagnosis of endolymphatic hydrops by low-frequency masking.

Low-frequency masking is a new method for the diagnosis of endolymphatic hydrops. A short acoustic stimulus and a low-frequency masker tone are applied to the same ear in an adjustable phase relationship. We recorded phase-dependent masked thresholds from normal-hearing subjects, and patients with Ménière's disease and sensory hearing loss without vertigo. In normal hearing, there is a mean maximal difference in masking (modulation depth) of 28 dB between the phase delays of 0 degree and 270 degrees. In patients with sensory hearing loss without vertigo, modulation depth is reduced due to recr

[Effect of contralateral stimulation on otoacoustic evoked emissions in acute deafness].

23 patients with unilateral hearing loss and presence of TEOAE on both ears were examined with regard to the association between contralateral acoustic stimulation and evoked otoacoustic emissions. Contralateral white noise of 40 dB HL, 50 dB HL and 60 dB HL decreases the amplitude of TEOAE both at the ear with and without hearing loss. In comparison with a group of subjects with normal hearing, the decrease in the amplitude of TEOAE was less in the group of patients with hearing loss. Two paradoxical cases were found with an increase in the TEOAE amplitude in the ear with hearing loss during

Spatiotemporal reconstruction of auditory steady-state responses to acoustic amplitude modulations: Potential sources beyond the auditory pathway.

Investigating the neural generators of auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs), i.e., auditory evoked brain responses, with a wide range of screening and diagnostic applications, has been the focus of various studies for many years. Most of these studies employed a priori assumptions regarding the number and location of neural generators. The aim of this study is to reconstruct ASSR sources with minimal assumptions in order to gain in-depth insight into the number and location of brain regions that are activated in response to low- as well as high-frequency acoustically amplitude modulated sig

Enjoyment of music by elderly hearing-impaired listeners.

BACKGROUND: Anecdotal evidence suggests that hearing loss interferes with the enjoyment of music, although it is not known how widespread this problem currently is. PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence of music-listening difficulties among a group of elderly hearing aid wearers. RESEARCH DESIGN: Interview. Telephone interviews were conducted with patients who wore hearing aids. Questions regarding several aspects of music listening were included. STUDY SAMPLE: Sixty-eight hearing-impaired people served as subjects. They had all been seen in the audiology clinic for hearing aid evaluation dur

Audiogenic seizure susceptibility and auditory brainstem responses in rats prenatally exposed to alcohol.

Rats prenatally exposed to alcohol (0%, 17.5%, or 35% ethanol-derived calories) were tested for audiogenic seizure susceptibility on one of postnatal days 18 to 23, then retested 5 days later. Prenatal alcohol exposure did not influence audiogenic seizure susceptibility or severity. There was, however, a significant increase in seizure incidence on the retest day for all groups, suggesting a priming effect. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) data suggested that prenatal alcohol exposure and acoustic trauma (i.e., exposure to an alarm bell used for eliciting audiogenic seizures) induced measurab

[Objective determination of auditory threshold in the child].

In children who are difficult to test with dubious behavioural-audiometric results, brainstem electric response audiometry (BERA) is today the method of choice for accurate determination of hearing threshold. Oral sedation with the shortacting neuroleptic chloroprothixene allows BERA to be performed on an outpatient basis. Thirty-six girls and 41 boys aged between 11 weeks and 12 years (median age 40 months) with inconsistent behavioural-audiometric findings were examined. Frequency-following responses were searched for in flat fast response curves. BERA proved to be a very sensitive method co

Effect of Combined Respiratory Muscle Training (cRMT) on Dysphonia following Single CVA: A Retrospective Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Although dysphonia is less prevalent than dysphagia following cerebrovascular accidents, dysphonia does contribute to the burden of disease resulting from stroke. Strengthening muscles of the larynx and respiratory tract through respiratory muscle training (RMT) has proven effective in improving voice after neurological insult. However, approaches to strengthen only the expiratory muscle groups (EMST) dominate the clinical study literature, with variable outcomes. By focusing on exhalation, the contribution of inspiratory muscles to phonation may have been overlooked. This study in

Hand Gestures Facilitate the Acquisition of Novel Phonemic Contrasts When They Appropriately Mimic Target Phonetic Features.

Purpose Research has shown that observing hand gestures mimicking pitch movements or rhythmic patterns can improve the learning of second language (L2) suprasegmental features. However, less is known about the effects of hand gestures on the learning of novel phonemic contrasts. This study examines (a) whether hand gestures mimicking phonetic features can boost L2 segment learning by naive learners and (b) whether a mismatch between the hand gesture form and the target phonetic feature influences the learning effect. Method Fifty Catalan native speakers undertook a short multimodal training se

Gelotophobia and the challenges of implementing laughter into virtual agents interactions.

This study investigated which features of AVATAR laughter are perceived threatening for individuals with a fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia), and individuals with no gelotophobia. Laughter samples were systematically varied (e.g., intensity, laughter pitch, and energy for the voice, intensity of facial actions of the face) in three modalities: animated facial expressions, synthesized auditory laughter vocalizations, and motion capture generated puppets displaying laughter body movements. In the online study 123 adults completed, the GELOPH <15 > (Ruch and Proyer, 2008a,b) and rated rando

Towards a closed loop retinal prosthesis: measuring electrically evoked retinal responses using large electrodes.

Objective.Sensory prostheses use arrays of electrodes to stimulate neural tissue and restore a sense of vision or hearing. At perceptible levels of stimulation, the current from each electrode spreads and causes overlapping regions of neural activation. This lack of specificity results in perceptual deficits. Methods to overcome this reduced specificity, such as a closed loop stimulation approach require measurement of the neural response to stimulation. This investigation tests the possibility of using the large stimulating electrodes such as those required by some subretinal or suprachoroida

Deep Brain Stimulation of Heschl Gyrus: Implantation Technique, Intraoperative Localization, and Effects of Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is a source of considerable morbidity, and neuromodulation has been shown to be a potential treatment option. However, the location of the primary auditory cortex within Heschl gyrus in the temporal operculum presents challenges for targeting and electrode implantation. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether anatomic targeting with intraoperative verification using evoked potentials can be used to implant electrodes directly into the Heschl gyrus (HG). METHODS: Nine patients undergoing stereo-electroencephalogram evaluation for epilepsy were enrolled. HG was directly targeted o

Enhanced auscultation with a new graphic display system.

BACKGROUND: To provide an objective method to support and teach auscultation, a new portable system (graphic display system) was evaluated for graphic display and printing of heart sounds. METHODS: Ninety-one patients from three institutions, with a variety of heart sound abnormalities, were studied by two examiners. A graphic recording was made in each and compared with the auscultatory findings. RESULTS: The findings of the graphic system confirmed the auscultatory impressions of both examiners in 77 (85%) of the 91 cases. Brief sound transients, such as split second sounds and ejection so

Inherited low-frequency hearing loss. A new mixed conductive/sensorineural entity?

Eighteen patients with low-frequency hearing loss ( LFHL ), 10 males and 8 females with an average age of 27 years, were examined in order to classify their hearing loss, i.e. to find the topical site of the hearing lesion and to evaluate the aetiology of the hearing disorder. Based on extensive audiological test procedures, the patients could be subdivided into two groups: Group A comprising 11 patients with true sensorineural hearing impairment caused by various well-known aetiologies, and group B comprising 7 patients in whom no classification of the LFHL could be made because of conflictin

Sensory and cognitive event-related potentials in myalgic encephalomyelitis.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) is a form of post viral fatigue syndrome resulting in myalgia and fluctuating fatiguability. Symptoms reflecting central nervous system dysfunction are common and include muscle weakness, headache, sensory disturbances, poor short term memory and impairment of concentration. In view of the fact that sensory and cognitive disturbances are experienced by many patients objective evidence was sought with multi-modality sensory evoked potentials and auditory event-related cognitive potentials in a group of ME patients both with and without the enteroviral antigen, VP1

Executive functions and cognitive subprocesses in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.

In recent years, special interest has been focused on impairments of executive functions in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). However, the majority of studies have not clearly separated deficits in executive functions from impairments in other cognitive processes involved in task solving. In the present study, working memory (WM) functions of 20 patients with OSAS were compared with those of 10 age-, sex- and education-matched healthy subjects. Cognitive functions were measured four times a day; each of these measurements was accompanied by an assessment of subjective and
