144 placentas were sampled from all cases of stillbirth weighing 500 g and above seen over a period of thirteen months in the UKM Unit of the Maternity Hospital, Kuala Lumpur. Sampling was limited to 1-3 blocks per placenta for histological study. Forty-two women with abnormal ultrasound findings after 27 weeks' gestation underwent a placental biopsy. In 39 cases, a karyotype was obtained from a direct preparation within 48 h, five abnormal karyotypes being detected (four trisomies and a triploidy). Placental Chorioangioma occurs in 1% of pregnancies and are generally asymptomatic. However, they are known to cause a number of complications which are detrimental to the mother, fetus or the neonate. A typical case where acute polyhydramnios precipitated premature labour and delivery of the fetus as a result of a large placental chorioangioma is presented. A brief review of the other possible complications are also included.

Two clinical cases of fetal hydrops are discussed: one of them was caused by diffuse lymphangiectasis and the other was idiopathic. A review of recent literature regarding the management of non-immunological hydrops is presented and gives hope for a new therapeutic approach to fetal hydrops especially in cases of chylothorax. However the mortality remains extremely high because of lung hypoplasia.

The placental transfer of clonidine was investigated in five pregnancies. Clonidine readily crosses the placenta. The drug elimination in neonates was slow, but the only clinical abnormality was that of a raised arterial blood pressure. Hypertension for at least 24 h was observed in four cases. It is suggested that this may be related to a withdrawal syndrome due to the sudden cessation of the placentally transferred drug.

A number of scientifically substantiated indications of the application of placental suspension in man of higher age, the positive results of the studies of the effectiveness of placental therapy on metabolic processes and physiological functions of the aging organism, and the experience won in the application of placental suspension in the complex therapy of some diseases frequently occurring at old age allow us to consider this kind of treatment an effective therapy and thus to recommend tissue therapy with a placental suspension for the introduction into geriatric practice.
