For many years, plants have long served as sources of potential therapeutic agents. Recently, there has been a growing interest in investigating the effects of plant bio-active compounds on epigenetic modulation of several processes-among them, modifications of DNA, histones, and microRNAs that influence gene expression. Aberrant epigenetic changes can affect key cellular processes by altering the expression of many important genes, leading to disturbances in human cells, and consequently, to various diseases including systemic autoimmune diseases. However, these modifications are reversible,

Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of different concentrations of Cd on the performance of the Cd accumulator Conyza canadens … eviating the toxicity of Cd in C. canadensis. Furthermore, results demonstrate that PC synthesis in plant cells is related to Cd concentration and that PC production levels in plants are related to the toxic effects caused by soil Cd level. These findings demonstrate the roles played by these compounds in supporting Cd tolerance in C. canadensis.

New and detailed data are presented on the phytochemical composition of the volatile and non-volatile organic compounds of the Mediterranean endemic species Portenschlagiella ramosissima (Port.) Tutin. Both the essential oil and hydrosol were obtained from the air-dried plant by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The volatile compounds from the fresh and air-dried plants and from the hydrosol were isolated for the first time by headspace solid-phase microextraction using two fibres of different polarity. The benzene derivative group was the predominant grou

Plasma membrane (PM) depolarization functions as an initial step in plant defense signaling pathways. However, only a few ion channels/transporters have been characterized in the context of plant immunity. Here, we show that the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) Na+:K+:2Cl- (NKCC) cotransporter CCC1 has a dual function in plant immunity. CCC1 functions independently of PM depolarization and negatively regulates pathogen-associated molecular pattern-triggered immunity. However, CCC1 positively regulates plant basal and effector-triggered resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) DC30

The plant hormone cytokinin plays a major role in regulating plant growth and development. Here we generated cytokinin-reduction Arabidopsis plants by overexpressing a heterologous cytokinin oxidase gene DSCKX1 from Dendrobium orchid. These transgenic plants exhibited reduced biomass, rapid root growth, decreased ability to form roots in vitro, and reduced response to cytokinin in growing calli and roots. Furthermore, the expression of KNAT1, STM, and CycD3 genes was significantly reduced in the transgenic plants, suggesting that cytokinin may function to control the cell cycles and shoot/root

Gall-forming insects induce host plants to form specialized structures (galls) that provide immature life stages of the insect access to host plant nutrients and protection from natural enemies. Feeding by larvae of the Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor Say) causes susceptible host wheat plants to produce a gall-like nutritive tissue that supports larval growth and development. To determine if changes in host plant free amino acid levels are associated with virulent Biotype L Hessian fly larval feeding, we quantified free amino acid levels in crown tissues of susceptible Newton wheat plants 1,

Phosphate starvation is one of the major factors limiting plant productivity globally. Soil microflora with an inherent trait of phosphate accumulation directly influences soil phosphorus level by regulating its labile form in soil solution. However, the detailed mechanism involved during their interaction with plants under phosphate deficient conditions is still unexplored. Hence, to dissect these complex gene regulatory networks, transcriptome analysis of A. thaliana roots grown under phosphate starved conditions in presence of phosphate accumulating bacteria (Pseudomonas putida; RAR) was pe

Silicon has not been cataloged as an essential element for higher plants. However, it has shown beneficial effects on many crops, especially under abiotic and biotic stresses. Silicon fertilization was evaluated for the first time on plants exposed to fluctuations in an Fe regime (Fe sufficiency followed by Fe deficiency and, in turn, by Fe resupply). Root and foliar Si applications were compared using cucumber plants that were hydroponically grown in a growth chamber under different Fe nutritional statuses and Si applied either to the roots or to the shoots. The SPAD index, Fe, and Mn concent

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) has been considered as a pivotal source of genetic innovation during early plant evolution. This review synthesizes evidence that genes acquired from microbes (e.g., bacteria and fungi) by plants facilitated critical adaptations in their terrestrialization. These include stress tolerance, phytohormone signaling, cell wall biosynthesis, and defense against pathogens and herbivores. The integration of foreign genes, often following post-transfer domestication such as intron gain, underscores a dynamic evolutionary process in land plants. Furthermore, bidirectional

Iron (Fe), as an important micronutrient element necessary for plant growth and development, not only participates in multiple physiological and biochemical reactions in cells but also exerts a crucial role in respiration and photosynthetic electron transport. Since Fe is mainly present in the soil in the form of iron hydroxide, Fe deficiency exists universally in plants and has become an important factor triggering crop yield reduction and quality decline. It has been shown that transcription factors (TFs), as an important part of plant signaling pathways, not only coordinate the internal sig

The thyroid glands of an 11-year-old castrated cow housed in a region contaminated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident were collected for histopathological examination. The estimated cumulative external exposure dose was 459 mSv. Macroscopically, the left lobe of the thyroid gland was firm and enlarged, and multilobular cystic structures could be observed on the cut surface. Histologically, the tumor cells were tall, cuboidal to columnar, and formed follicles of variable sizes and shapes. The fibrous capsule was unclear, and the neoplastic invasion of follicular tumor cells w

Guard cells detecting fluctuations in ambient CO2 levels and modulating stomatal aperture constitute a crucial adaptive response to changes of atmospheric CO2 in plants. CO2 sensing in animals is closely related to G proteins. Nonetheless, the role of G proteins in high-concentration CO2-regulated stomatal movement in plants remains unclear. Using NaHCO3 as a CO2 source, the results of this study showed that NaHCO3-induced stomatal closure and guard cell hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production in wild type plants were disrupted by Gα inhibitor pertussis toxin (PTX) and in mutants gpa1, cGα/DF, and

Mitoviral-derived sequences are frequently detected in plant genomes, encoding an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). These sequences share many similarities with mitoviruses that are known to commonly infect plant mitochondria. However, the functional characterization of nuclear-encoded mitoviral-RdRp remains unclear. This study elucidates the critical role of mRdRp (AT2G07749) in maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and embryo viability, highlighting the dual role of viral-derived genes in plant development and stress response. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that mRdRp shares 96.8% identity

During insect feeding, a complex interaction takes place at the feeding site, with plants deciphering molecular information associated with the feeding herbivore, resulting in the upregulation of the appropriate defenses, and the herbivore avoiding or preventing these defenses from taking effect. Whiteflies can feed on plants without causing significant damage to mesophyll cells, making their detection extra challenging for the plant. However, whiteflies secrete honeydew that ends up on the plant surface at the feeding site and on distal plant parts below the feeding site. We reasoned that thi
