The α2 Adrenoceptor Agonist and Sedative/Anaesthetic Dexmedetomidine Excites Diverse Neuronal Types in the Ventrolateral Preoptic Area of Male Mice.

Dexmedetomidine is an important ICU sedative. The mechanism of dexmedetomidine is not fully understood. Activating NA(-) and NA(+) neurons in the VLPO by dexmedetomidine using polysomnography and electrophysiological recording, this may explain the unique sedative properties with rapid arousal.

Predicting Sleep and Sleep Stage in Children Using Actigraphy and Heartrate via a Long Short-Term Memory Deep Learning Algorithm: A Performance Evaluation.

Children's ambulatory sleep is commonly measured via actigraphy. However, traditional actigraphy measured sleep (e.g., Sadeh algorithm) struggles to predict wake (i.e., specificity, values typically < 70) and cannot predict sleep stages. Long short-term memory (LSTM) is a machine learning algorithm that may address these deficiencies. This study evaluated the agreement of LSTM sleep estimates from actigraphy and heartrate (HR) data with polysomnography (PSG). Children (N = 238, 5-12 years, 52.8% male, 50% Black 31.9% White) participated in an overnight laboratory polysomnography. Participants …

Obstructive sleep apnea and ambulatory blood pressure abnormalities in children with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and hypertension are common complications in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Progression of CKD can aggravate OSA and hypertension whereas worsening sleep apnea can make hypertension difficult to treat in CKD patients. We, therefore, conducted a prospective study to evaluate the association between OSA and hypertension in pediatric patients with CKD. METHOD: In this prospective observational study consecutive children with CKD stage 3-5 (nondialysis dependent) underwent overnight polysomnography and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitorin…

Comparison of a novel non-contact biomotion sensor with wrist actigraphy in estimating sleep quality in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.

Ambulatory monitoring is of major clinical interest in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. We compared a novel non-contact biomotion sensor, which provides an estimate of both sleep time and sleep-disordered breathing, with wrist actigraphy in the assessment of total sleep time in adult humans suspected of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. Both systems were simultaneously evaluated against polysomnography in 103 patients undergoing assessment for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome in a hospital-based sleep laboratory (84 male, aged 55 ± 14 years and apnoea-hypopnoea index 21 ± …

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may worsen postoperatively. The objective of this randomized open-label trial is to determine whether perioperative auto-titrated continuous positive airway pressure (APAP) treatment decreases postoperative apnea hypopnea index (AHI) and improves oxygenation in patients with moderate and severe OSA. METHODS: The consented patients with AHI of more than 15 events/h on preoperative polysomnography were randomized into the APAP or control group (receiving routine care). The APAP patients received APAP for 2 or 3 preoperative, and 5 postoperative nights. …

Are biomarker levels a good follow-up tool for evaluating obstructive sleep apnea syndrome treatments?

BACKGROUND: Polysomnography is the standard method for evaluating results of treatments for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), but it is time-consuming and often unavailable. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to analyze the correlations between sleepiness, anthropometric parameters, exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and serum cytokine levels with changes in the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), in order to identify potential measurements that could be an alternative to polysomnography. METHODS: Based on AHI results, 22 non-OSAS and 68 OSAS cases were followed up. Among the 68 patients, 5 underwent …
