OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal ultrasonography allows real-time imaging of joint structures and may be used to complement clinical examination in rheumatological practice. We compared ultrasonography (US) with clinical examination (CE) in the detection of effusion, suprapatellar bursitis, and Baker's cyst of the knee in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in order to determine whether US provided additional clinical information.
METHODS: A total of 22 patients with RA (ACR criteria) underwent independent clinical and US examination of both knees for suprapatellar bursitis, knee effusion, and presence of Ba

Ultrasound is outstripping other diagnostic imaging techniques in the evaluation of osteoarthritis (OA). Due to its sub-millimetric resolution, ultrasound has the ability to detect minimal morphostructural abnormalities, even from preclinical or asymptomatic disease stages located in the main joint structures predominantly affected by OA: articular cartilage, synovial membrane, and subchondral bone. As of today, ultrasound has proven to be a useful tool for the detection of abnormalities occurring within soft tissues, including synovial hypertrophy, fluid accumulation, and synovial cysts, as w

The pseudothrombophlebitis syndrome is a complication of ruptured or dissecting synovial cyst in the knee joint (Baker's cyst). Three cases are reported of this clinical entity characterized by symptoms and signs suggesting deep vein thrombophlebitis. We mainly discuss the clinicoradiological aspects.

We present a case report of a previously healthy 43-year-old man with a Baker's cyst and spontaneous venous bleeding in a leg compartment, which caused a compartment syndrome. A thorough evaluation of this case and the treatment are explored.

Arterial cystic disease (ACD) affecting the popliteal artery (PA) is a rare form of non-atherosclerotic vascular disease. This cystic tumor is defined by the accumulation of a mucinous substance in the adventitia. Treatment options include percutaneous cyst aspiration, percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty, the evacuation of the cyst through a surgical approach, and resection of the affected artery segment followed by arterial reconstruction using autologous venous or prosthetic grafting. Our hospital received a 36-year-old man who had an intermittent claudication and periodically noct

The Baker cyst (BC), also known as the popliteal cyst or parameniscal cyst, is a fluid-filled sac that normally develops in the back of the knee, between the semimembranosus and medial head of the gastrocnemius. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of physiotherapy (10 days of treatment) that associates intermittent vacuum therapy (IVT) on the lower limbs in the treatment of the BC, respectively, in its size reduction. Sixty-five patients with knee osteoarthritis using Kellgren-Lawrence criteria and the presence of BC (ultrasonography evaluation), were divided into the Control and Vacuum gro…

OBJECTIVE: Baker's cyst (BC) is also known as popliteal cyst. To evaluate its effect on intra-articular pathology, it is important to have the exact volume of the cyst. As BC may change its shape due to mass effect of the surrounding anatomic structures, it is difficult to measure the exact volume of BC. This study examined the relationship between three-dimensionally measured BC volume and symptomatic intra-articular knee pathologies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The magnetic resonance (MR) images of 45 patients with symptomatic knees were retrospectively examined. The BC volumes were measured via …

Intraarticular steroid therapy in juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) is performed because of high local efficacy with few side effects. Imagin … MRI and US demonstrated pannus formation and effusion, but differentiation was less distinct on US. Popliteal cysts and lymph nodes were visible in both modalities. MRI additionally revealed articular cartilage loss and subchondral cysts, not shown by US. Epiphyseal overgrowth and osteopenia were best seen radiographically. At present MRI is the best tool to ass …

METHODS: We retro … 9.8%. Sacroiliitis is observed in 6%. Unusual forms included destructive polyarthritis (two cases), popliteal cyst (two cases), myositis (two cases) and ankylosing spondylitis (two cases).
CONCLUSION: Joint manifestations are common in Behçet's disease. They are frequently associated with erythema nodosum and necrotic pseudofolliculitis. Polyarthritis is not ra …

BACKGROUND: Adventitial cystic disease (ACD) is an unusual arteriopathy; case reports and small series constitute the available literature regarding treatment. We sought to examine the presentation, contemporary management, and long-term outcomes using a multi-institutional database.
METHODS: Using a standardized database, 14 institutions retrospectively collected demographics, comorbidities, presentation/symptoms, imaging, treatment, and follow-up data on consecutive patients treated for ACD during a 10-year period, using Society for Vascular Surgery reporting standards for limb ischemia. UNLABELLED: The incidence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is high in numerous surgical and medical diseases [1]. There are increasing data on higher incidence of DVT in patients with malignant and other diseases [2]. The diagnosis of DVT is not always simple since there are subclinical and asymptomatic forms of the disease [3]. Besides, there are numerous pathological conditions that imitate deep venous thrombosis [4].
METHODS: We present the results of a retrospective study over the period of January 1, 1996--June 30, 1998 at the Department of Vascular Surgery. Over that period we treated 11

CASE: A 55-year-old man underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for advanced osteoarthritis. A small preoperative Baker's cyst enlarged postoperatively, causing progressive posterior knee swelling and restricted flexion. Conservative treatment, including aspiration and corticosteroid injection, failed. Posteromedial arthroscopic decompression was performed. At 14-month follow-up, the patient was pain-free with full range of motion and no clinical evidence of recurrence.
CONCLUSION: Posteromedial arthroscopy is an effective minimally invasive option for persistent symptomatic Baker's cysts fol
