Role of musculoskeletal disorders in falls of postmenopausal women.

UNLABELLED: We aimed to investigate the role of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) as risk factors for falls among postmenopausal women. Our results indicate that MSDs are common and are associated with increased falling risk, especially nonslip falls. Excess number of falls due to MSDs is greater than that due to any other disease class. PURPOSE: Falls are a major public health problem worldwide. The aim of the study was to investigate the role of MSDs as risk factors for falls among postmenopausal women. METHODS: This cohort study utilized data from a population-based, prospective cohort stu

Cardiovascular Benefits of Exercise Training in Postmenopausal Hypertension.

Exercise training is often considered the cornerstone of nonpharmacological therapy for postmenopausal hypertension while aerobic exercise is the mainstay of life style modification for antihypertension. Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise is well tolerated on most days of the week by most people with postmenopausal hypertension and is not suspected to detract from exercise adherence. That being said, moderate aerobic exercise may be superior for eliciting cardiovascular benefits in hypertensive postmenopausal women and resistance exercise may offer desirable benefits. The beneficial outcomes

Labial adhesions in postmenopausal women: presentation and management.

Labial adhesion is defined as complete or partial fusion of the labia minora in the midline through flimsy or dense adhesions. It may be congenital or acquired. Acquired cases are mainly seen in oestrogen deficiency states in prepubertal girls and postmenopausal women. Aggravating factors include chronic inflammation due to poor hygiene, eczema, lichen planus or sclerosus, seborrhic dermatitis, eczema, local trauma and recurrent urinary tract infections. Patients may be asymptomatic or present with urinary or vulval symptoms. Management in mild cases includes the application of topical oestrog

Long-term treatment strategies for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Osteoporosis guidelines do not usually provide specific recommendations regarding what medication is most appropriate for individual patients. Generic oral bisphosphonates are often considered first-line treatment for osteoporosis, but treatment duration is limited, based on potential long-term safety concerns, and there is no consensus about what to do after 5 years. There are no recommendations concerning long-term management of osteoporosis over 30 or more years of postmenopausal life. RECENT FINDINGS: This review attempts to specify medication choices and provide the be

Ectopic Breast Tissue of the Vulva in a Postmenopausal Woman.

Ectopic breast tissue is a rare condition caused by remnants of the mammary ridges that fail to involute during embryologic development. To date, only 39 cases have been reported in the literature worldwide. Here, we report the 40th case of a 69-year-old G3P2 postmenopausal Caucasian woman who presented with complaint of vulvar swelling. Biopsy of the mass revealed the presence of a benign mammary gland-like adenoma which was completely excised shortly thereafter. Clinical presentation of vulvar breast tissue is highly variable depending on the amount of breast tissue developed and its functio

Determinants of prolactin in postmenopausal Chinese women in Singapore.

PURPOSE: Mechanistic and observational data together support a role for prolactin in breast cancer development. Determinants of prolactin in Asian populations have not been meaningfully explored, despite the lower risk of breast cancer in Asian populations. METHODS: Determinants of plasma prolactin were evaluated in 442 postmenopausal women enrolled in the Singapore Chinese Health Study, a population-based prospective cohort study. At baseline all cohort members completed an in-person interview that elicited information on diet, menstrual and reproductive history, and lifestyle factors. One y

Use of bone turnover markers in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Bone turnover comprises two processes: the removal of old bone (resorption) and the laying down of new bone (formation). N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PINP) and C-telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I) are markers of bone formation and resorption, respectively, that are recommended for clinical use. Bone turnover markers can be measured on several occasions in one individual with good precision. However, these markers are subject to several sources of variability, including feeding (resorption decreases) and recent fracture (all markers increase for several months). Bone turnove

Denosumab - a new medication in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a chronic, systemic skeletal disorder characterised by decreased bone density. It leads to an increased risk of bone fractures - one of the major causes of disability in modern societies. Bisphosphonates are the most commonly used medications in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Denosumab, a new approach to fracture prevention, is a fully human monoclonal antibody that targets nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL), an important cytokine regulating formation and function of osteoclasts. Generally, denosumab is not used as initial therapy; however, in some cases it should

Metabolic syndrome and sexual function in postmenopausal women.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is associated with metabolic syndrome (MS) and to identify factors that contribute to FSD in postmenopausal women. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in 111 sexually active women aged 45-65 years. We applied the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) to evaluate the participant's sexual function and a structured questionnaire to collect demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, anthropometric, and laboratory data. RESULTS: The prevalences of MS and FSD were 68.5% and 70.3%, respectively.

Life Satisfaction and Morbidity among Postmenopausal Women.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between morbidity and global life satisfaction in postmenopausal women taking into account type and number of diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 11,084 women (age range 57-66 years) from a population-based cohort of Finnish women (OSTPRE Study) responded to a postal enquiry in 1999. Life satisfaction was measured with a 4-item scale. Self-reported diseases diagnosed by a physician and categorized according to ICD-10 main classes were used as a measure of morbidity. Enquiry data on health and lifestyle were used as covariates in the multivariate

Postmenopausal osteoporosis - clinical, biological and histopathological aspects.

Osteoporosis is one of the most common disorders in postmenopausal women, affecting the quality of life and increasing the risk for fractures in minor traumas. Changes in the bone microarchitecture causes static changes in the body and affects motility. In this study, we analyzed two groups of women, one with physiological menopause and one with surgically induced menopause. The diagnosis of osteoporosis was suspected based on the clinical symptoms and confirmed by assessing bone mineral density by the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Comparing some clinical and biological aspects ther
