The influence of oral health on sports performance: an interdisciplinary perspective.

Sports performance is a multifactorial concept determined by the interplay of physical, technical, tactical, and psychological factors. While its measurement is straightforward in metrical sports (e.g., athletics or swimming), it is more complex in team or aesthetic disciplines. In recent years, the role of oral health has gained attention as a potentially modifiable factor influencing athletic performance. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of how sports performance is defined and measured - particularly in explosive and endurance sports - and explores the impact of oral health on p

Glimpse on 21st century new phobias; a predictive model of nomophobia.

The main purpose of this study was to examine the explanatory power of a predictive model of nomophobia consisting of rumination, fear of missing out (FoMO), mindfulness and non-pathological compulsions. The research involved a cross-sectional design exploring the prevalence of nomophobia in a Romanian university students' cohort. The quantitative methodology was used to collect and analyse the data obtained from all the respondents. Researchers adapted and pretested the questionnaire NMP-Q, before distributing it to 194 university students. SPSS (V. 20) and Hayes's PROCESS tool were used to a

Trauma and stress response among Hurricane Katrina evacuees.

OBJECTIVES: Hurricane Katrina's impact on public health has been significant and multifaceted, with trauma-related psychological sequelae likely to result in a sizable burden of disease. Data were collected that assessed acute stress disorder (ASD) prevalence and factors related to ASD symptomatology among sheltered evacuees. METHODS: On days 12 to 19 after Katrina, evacuees at a major emergency shelter completed surveys that assessed demographics, Katrina-specific experiences, and ASD symptomatology. RESULTS: Sixty-two percent of the sample met ASD threshold criterion. Projections based on

Temporomandibular disorder as an indicator of altered physiological stress reactivity: a highly standardized experimental protocol.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are frequently associated with psychological stress. Their prevalence appears particularly high in populations exposed to substantial stress, such as students during examination periods. While subjective assessments have linked TMDs to psychological stress, physiological evidence remains limited. Heart rate variability (HRV) is an established biomarker of autonomic regulation and stress reactivity and may therefore be useful for characterizing stress responses in individuals with TMD symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated stress reactivity i

Pain Perception and Psychoemotional Responses Across Different Scaling Technologies: A Comparative Pilot Clinical Study.

Background/Objectives: Scaling is central to non-surgical periodontal therapy; however, it is often perceived as uncomfortable, particularly in periodontitis. Psychological distress may amplify pain and reduce adherence. This comparative pilot study assessed whether ultrasonic technology influences patient-reported pain and psychoemotional status while quantifying the contribution of the periodontal condition and baseline psychological factors. Methods: A monocentric split-mouth design enrolled 42 adults (21 with stage I-III, grade B periodontitis; 21 periodontally healthy). Maxillary scaling

Psychological symptoms in perimenarcheal adolescents: association with PCOS risk factors.

INTRODUCTION: PCOS is linked with disproportionately high rates of depression and anxiety that significantly compromise quality of life and pose problems for treatment eligibility and adherence. The overarching objective of the proposed manuscript is to define the presence and severity of psychological symptoms in peri-menarcheal adolescents, and their association with well-described risk-factors for future PCOS. METHODS: Fifty-two pre- and early post-menarcheal participants underwent a non-fasting blood draw to measure reproductive hormones (Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH), Luteinizing Hormone

The predictive role of health-promoting behaviours and perceived stress in aneurysmal rupture.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine the roles of two modifiable factors-health-promoting behaviours and perceived stress-in predicting aneurysmal rupture. BACKGROUND: Unruptured intracranial aneurysm detection produces significant stress and anxiety in patients because of the risk of rupture. Compared to nonmodifiable risk factors for rupture such as age, gender and aneurysm size/location, less attention has been given to modifiable risk factors. Two modifiable factors, health-promoting behaviours and perceived stress, have hardly been examined as potential predictors of rupture. DESIGN: This st

Type A behavior pattern, inhibited power motivation, and activity inhibition.

The constructs of the Type A behavior pattern and the Inhibited Power Motive Syndrome (IPMS) have many features in common. The empirical relation between the two constructs was investigated in this study with 45 employed, male medical and surgical patients. Four different measures of the Type A pattern were examined. Results showed that, of the four measures, the Structured Interview and the Hostility Scale were related significantly to the IPMS. Systolic blood pressure reactivity was also related significantly to the IPMS. These relations could be ascribed largely to activity inhibition alone

Characterizing PTSD Using Electrophysiology: Towards A Precision Medicine Approach.

Objective. Resting-state EEG measures have shown potential in distinguishing individuals with PTSD from healthy controls. ERP components such as N2, P3, and late positive potential have been consistently linked to cognitive abnormalities in PTSD, especially in tasks involving emotional or trauma-related stimuli. However, meta-analyses have reported inconsistent findings. The understanding of biomarkers that can classify the varied symptoms of PTSD remains limited. This study aimed to develop a concise set of electrophysiological biomarkers, using neutral cognitive tasks, that could be applied

Psychopathic traits, gender, and motivations for sex: Putative paths to sexual coercion.

Evidence suggests that both men and women perpetrate sexual coercion. Psychological factors, including psychopathic traits and power motivations, have been proposed to characterize male-perpetrated sexual coercion; however, it is unclear whether these factors play a similar role in female-perpetrated coercion or whether other motivations (e.g., intimacy, affect regulation) should be considered. To improve our understanding in this area, the current study first examined relationships between psychopathic traits and sexual coercion in a sample of 1199 undergraduate students (756 women), with gen

The association between depression, perceived stress, and sexual function among adults attending primary health care services.

BACKGROUND: Sexual function is an integral component of overall well-being and is influenced by both biological and psychosocial factors. While psychological distress is known to affect health outcomes broadly, its specific impact on sexual function among adults attending primary health care services has not been well established. This study aims to examine the relationships between sexual functioning and depression, perceived stress, and sociodemographic variables among adults aged 18-45 who attend primary healthcare services, and to determine whether these psychological variables significant

Indirect Disaster-Related Deaths Among Hemodialysis Patients Following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident.

INTRODUCTION: Disaster-related deaths (DRDs) are indirect fatalities caused by physical or psychological stress during evacuation. Patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) face increased vulnerability during disasters due to reduced dialysis frequency, elevated mental stress, and limited access to medical resources. Although their risk is heightened, detailed analyses of DRDs in HD patients remain sparse. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 13 HD-related DRD cases in Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture, following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. A total of 520 DRDs we

Psychological Treatments for People With Severe and Enduring Anorexia Nervosa: A Mini Review.

This Mini-Review presents recent research into evidence for psychological treatments for people with severe and enduring anorexia nervosa (SEAN). Two psychological therapies, specialist supportive clinical management (SSCM), and cognitive behavior therapy for anorexia nervosa (CBT-AN) have limited (one randomized controlled study) evidence of efficacy. Both have had adaptations for SEAN, notably with revision of the primary treatment goal of improved quality of life and full weight recovery a secondary goal. A major issue with existing studies is poor definition of SEAN, and the large deficit

[The Influence of Media Consumption During Early Childhood on Media Use and Psychological Disorders in Adolescence].

The Influence of Media Consumption During Early Childhood on Media Use and Psychological Disorders in Adolescence There are many studies that suggest that there is a link between high media consumption and psychological, physiological and social disorders. Nevertheless, there are also inconsistent results, methodical limitations and a lack of longitudinal studies. The present study analyses habits of media consumption in children and adolescents, the influence of different early childhood risk factors on the use of the media in adolescence and the links between early childhood media consumptio

Higher psychological pain during a major depressive episode may be a factor of vulnerability to suicidal ideation and act.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that psychological pain ("psychache") is a key factor in the suicidal process. In addition, suicidal acts may be best understood within a stress-vulnerability model. We hypothesized that more intense psychache during a major depressive episode would be a factor of vulnerability to suicidal behavior. METHODS: Patients hospitalized for a major depressive episode, including 87 individuals with a recent history of suicidal acts, 61 individuals with a past history of suicidal acts, and 62 individuals without any suicidal history, were assessed at admission using s

[Employment after the first myocardial infarct and rehabilitation].

Which are the determinants of return to work in middle aged myocardial infarction patients? This question was analysed by means of a follow-up study on men between 1986 and 1992 (group 1: n = 64, age = 46.6 (+/- 5.4), 5-6 years follow-up; group 2: n = 36, age = 51.2 (+/- 7.5), 2 years follow up), all of whom underwent a cardiac rehabilitation program in our hospital. Our aim was to determine the predictive power of social and psychological as compared to cardiologic factors. These factors were operating under two relevant conditions: 1. relative social homogeneity of the samples; 2. rehabilita

Differentiating constitutional thinness from anorexia nervosa in DSM 5 era.

INTRODUCTION: Constitutional thinness (CT) is an underweight state characterized by normal menstruations and no change in feeding behaviour. Thinness is the only resemblance between Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and CT. Removal of amenorrhea from the new DSM 5 definition of AN might result in misdiagnosis between these two populations. The objective of this study was to compare CT, AN and Control subjects in terms of biological, anthropometric, and psychological markers in order to better distinguish AN from CT subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Body composition, nutritional markers, pituitary hormones

Event centrality as a unique predictor of posttraumatic stress symptoms and perceived disability following spinal cord injury.

STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving completion of self-report measures. OBJECTIVES: Individuals who acquire a spinal cord injury (SCI) face numerous physical and psychological challenges, with the former receiving considerable less attention during the rehabilitation process. In this article, we examined event centrality as a unique predictor of psychological outcomes in a sample of individuals receiving rehabilitation for SCI. Event centrality refers to the extent to which individuals construe a stressful experience as a core part of their identity. In samples of ind
