[Legal aspects of temporal lobe epilepsy in prisoners].

The last report of the french Direction Générale de La Santé noted that epilepsy is twice more common in inmates than in the French population at large for the same range of age. Temporal lobe epilepsy is well known to give rise to aggressive behaviour and to psychotic syndromes. The development in prison of auto- or hetero aggressive behaviours has also been observed. We report on a 24-years-old male who was incarcerated for violence and robbery. He worked as a plumber and had no medical history except hepatitis C and use of IV drugs. Temporal lobe epilepsy was diagnosed because of auditory h

The use of ivermectin in controlling an outbreak of scabies in a prison.

BACKGROUND: Ivermectin is a potentially useful treatment for scabies. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin in the treatment of scabies in an institutional environment. METHODS: A single dose of ivermectin 150 microg kg-1 was given under supervision to 1153 prisoners in a prison in northern Tanzania where there was an outbreak of scabies. RESULTS: Thirty per cent of the prisoners were cured after 1 week, 88% after 4 weeks and 95.5% after 8 weeks. Of 16 prisoners with crusted scabies, seven (44%) still had scabies after 8 weeks. Those who were not cured were then treate

Prevalence of dyslexia among Texas prison inmates.

Approximately 80% of prison inmates are reported to be functionally illiterate. We hypothesized that poor single word decoding (the chief feature of dyslexia) accounts for a significant percentage of that rate. We studied 253 subjects selected randomly from more than 130,000 Texas prison inmates. Among them, we conducted a cross-sectional sample survey of recently admitted Texas inmates, beginning with social and educational background and followed by an educational test battery that included measures of word attack skill and reading comprehension. Deficient performance was defined primarily a

A study of outrage of modesty offenders in a Singapore prison.

Outrage of modesty (OOM) offenders cause considerable annoyance and distress to their victims. The offending behaviours include touching, grabbing or fondling of erogenous or non-erogenous parts of the victim's body. The purpose of this study is to examine a prison cohort of OOM offenders and to compare them with a group of OOM offenders who had been remanded in a state mental hospital. All prisoners serving sentence over a two-year study period were interviewed. They were of similar mean age to the hospital cohort but were better educated, more likely to be married and most were working. Vict

Tuberculosis case detection in a state prison system.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to describe the epidemiology of tuberculosis ((TB) among inmates in the Georgia state prison system; to evaluate the effectiveness of the TB case detection methods used; to evaluate the use of contact tracing for inmate TB cases; and to determine rates of completion of therapy. METHODS: Using a standardized form, the authors abstracted data from reports to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prison hospital medical charts, and county health department records for all patients with TB treated in the Georgia Department of Corrections prison system

Acute pancreatitis in a prisoner with AIDS. Bugs or drugs?

Acute pancreatitis has been the cause of death in several patients with AIDS and AIDS-related complex (ARC). Documented etiologies include several microorganisms and adverse drug reactions. We present a case of an HIV-positive prison inmate who died of acute necrotizing pancreatitis. Although he was infected with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare, it is more likely that 2',3'-dideoxyinosine, an antiretroviral agent, induced pancreatitis. It is important to obtain a thorough pharmaceutical history in HIV-positive patients. Fatal medicinal reactions may result in death in ARC or AIDS patients.

Correlates of pathological gambling propensity in prison inmates.

The South Oaks Gambling Inventory was administered to 136 consecutively admitted inmates in a medium-security prison in Nevada. According to the criteria of the authors of this instrument, 22.79% of these inmates had some problem and 26% were probable pathological gamblers. Significant positive correlations with the F, depression, psychopathic deviate, psychasthenia, paranoia, schizophrenia, and Mac Andrew alcoholism scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) were found. Gambling score was negatively correlated with the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices measure of int

In the present study an analysis of the incidence and characteristics of tuberculosis in the prison population people is done. METHODS: The General Penitentiary Hospital attends a prison population from the penitentiary centers of Madrid and its surrounding areas. From 1 March 1991-31 August 1992 a retrospective study of the patients with tuberculosis diagnosed by culture isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was performed. HIV testing in prisoners: is mandatory testing mandatory?

We studied 977 newly incarcerated Oregon inmates to compare voluntary versus mandatory human immunodeficiency virus antibody (HIVAb) testing in the prison setting. All inmates were offered HIVAb counseling and testing. Blood drawn for routine syphilis serology from those who declined this offer was also tested for HIVAb after personal identifiers had been removed. Only 1.2 percent (12) prisoners were HIV positive. However, 62.5 percent (611) inmates were at risk for HIV infection by being an intravenous drug user, a male homosexual, or hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb) positive. The ratio of a

Personality characteristics of death-row prison inmates.

An analysis of MMPI differences that appeared between a sample of 34 male inmates sentenced to be executed by asphyxiation and a representative prison population sample of 2,551 male inmates revealed that the profiles of both groups were indicative of a behavior disorder. The Death Row inmates presented significantly higher elevations on the PA and SC scales. Further evaluation of the subscale scores for the PA and SC scales demonstrated that the test responses of the Death Row inmates to these two scales were related more closely to feelings of resentment, hopelessness, failure, frustration,

Stigma toward persons with mental illnesses in prison.

PURPOSE: The healthcare provision for mentally ill offenders in Germany remains inadequate, despite higher prevalence rates compared to the general population. We examined whether stigma-based discrimination is greater toward this group compared to individuals with somatic illnesses and/or non-incarcerated individuals. METHODS: In February 2025, we conducted a quota-based online survey among adults living in Germany (aged 18 years or older; n = 1,609), in which respondents were randomly assigned to one of eight case vignettes varying by illness (schizophrenia vs. diabetes), incarceration stat

Prevalence of mental illness in Northern Territory prisoners.

BackgroundPrisoners experience disproportionately high rates of mental illness. The incarceration rate in the Northern Territory (NT) is five times the national average but there is no existing research regarding the prevalence of mental disorder in this population.ObjectivesThis cross-sectional observational study aimed to examine the prevalence of mental illness and substance use disorders among NT prisoners.Methods310 adult prisoner files were analysed, using four electronic medical record databases which captured a person's lifetime contact with healthcare services in the NT. Successful strategies in the voluntarily repeated Prisoner's Dilemma.

Reciprocity is central to explanations of cooperation among unrelated individuals in societies of humans and other animals. Most mathematical analyses of the evolution of reciprocity are based on the repeated Prisoner's Dilemma (RPD) and typically assume that new strategies are rarely introduced by mutation or analogous cultural processes, that behavioral errors are absent or infrequent, and that agents are bound to interact with the same partner. Here we analyze a version of the RPD in which new strategies are frequently tested, behavioral errors occur at a non-negligible rate, and actors may
