Rheumatoid aortic incompetence is infrequent, with only 43 cases published in the literature. Seven additional patients (5 females and 2 males) with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and aortic incompetence are reported herein. All seven patients had seropositive RA with severe joint disease and extraarticular manifestations (nodules, cutaneous vasculitis, multiple neuritis). From 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1987, 297 patients were admitted to Ullevål Hospital, Dept. of Surgery, with abdominal injury after blunt trauma. 23 patients with traumatic spondylolisthesis of CII (hangman's fracture), all treated conservatively by external immobilisation and/or bed rest, were followed for an average of 9.6 years, 10 of them for 10-20 years. Radiographically two groups could be distinguished: one with bone formation between the vertebrae of CII and CIII and another without bone formation. Irrespective of the amount of bone formation their long-term prognosis was good: no new symptoms, old symptoms diminished and no limitation of neck movements. Degenerative changes in the neighbouring motor segments were not observed.

Three hundred and thirty one patients with cancer of the rectum and rectosigmoid junction, operated on during the period 1968-1985 are here examined. The study shows the prognostic value and the impact that stage, histopathological grade, number and location of nodal metastases, morphology of the primary tumour, occurrence of obstruction, perforation, and haemorrhage have on the natural history of the tumour. Forty-eight patients with carcinoma of the renal pelvis were treated between 1976 and 1986. 77% (n = 37) underwent nephrectomy; 4% (n = 2) open biopsy; 8% (n = 4) organ-preserving surgery, and 11% (n = 5) were treated conservatively. Major complications associated with the nephrectomies included: hemorrhage (11%); pulmonary embolism (5%); abscess (5%); ileus (5%), and pneumonia (5%). There was no postoperative mortality. Grade-III carcinoma, advanced tumor stage (T4N+M1), and generalized urothelial cancer worsened the prognosis. Such patients might benefit from adjuvant therapy.

To determine the relationship between outcome and histologic type, the authors examined data from 168 cases of hepatoblastoma (HB) and 28 cases of hepatocarcinoma (HC) accrued from children over a 14-year period. Although an estimated 1 million Americans suffer ocular injuries each year, the setting of injury and its prognostic implications have not been closely examined. Data from a program for hypertension screening and follow-up were used to study the relationship between age at onset of hypertension and the risk of cardiovascular complications. The risk for hypertensive subjects, compared with normotensive subjects of similar age, declined significantly as age of onset increased from 40 to 69 years.
