"…I feel like I am just staying here waiting for death": A qualitative study of the lived experiences of people with advanced illness in refugee settlements in Uganda.

Refugees and migrants with advanced illness frequently face fragmented and inconsistent access to health services. Structural barriers delay symptom management, undermine continuity of care, and limit access to palliative support. A clearer understanding of their lived experiences is essential to inform equitable health system responses and inclusive models of care. This study explored the lived experiences of individuals with advanced illness in three refugee settlements in Uganda to identify contextually grounded strategies for improving access to and delivery of palliative care. In-depth se

People, places, systems and society:A qualitative exploration of socio-cultural factors in head and neck cancer survivorship.

PURPOSE: People living with head and neck cancer (HNC) often endure permanent and life changing adverse effects of treatment and reduced health-related quality of life. Study of post-traumatic growth (PTG), is gaining traction to understand why some people living with cancer have better psychosocial outcomes than others. Current theoretical models on PTG point to the importance of 'socio-cultural influences' but do not provide insight into how such socio-cultural factors influence survivorship outcomes. This research aimed to illuminate pathways to PTG following HNC by exploring socio-cultural

The experiences of individuals who have had gestational diabetes: A qualitative exploration.

AIM: To qualitatively explore the experiences of individuals with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) in Australia, and to recognise opportunities for leveraging digital health to enhance the support of GDM management. Etiology of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome: psychoimmunoneurendocrine dysfunction (PINE syndrome) or just a really bad infection?

PURPOSE: To review the etiology and pathogenesis of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS). METHODS: A literature review for the years 1985-2012 was performed using the MEDLINE database of the United States National Library of Medicine. RESULTS: The evidence for ongoing infection in men with CP/CPPS is lacking. However, men with CP/CPPS are twice as likely to have had a sexually transmitted disease (STD), and bacteria from men with CP/CPPS may be phenotypically different from those that cause cystitis or acute prostatitis. Evidence continues to support an alteration in bo

Nothing can defeat combined hands (Abashize hamwe ntakibananira): protective processes and resilience in Rwandan children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

In Rwanda, the dual vectors of HIV and legacy of the 1994 genocide have had devastating consequences for children and families. In this and other low-resource settings, extreme poverty, poor access to services, family conflict, and other adversities put children and families affected by HIV/AIDS at increased risk of mental health problems. However, even in the face of tremendous hardship, many children and families demonstrate better than expected outcomes. To design interventions that harness these natural sources of resilience, greater knowledge of local protective processes is needed. This

Factors influencing the professional quality of life in South African audiologists.

BACKGROUND: Audiologists in South Africa operate within a complex, under-resourced healthcare system where high caseloads, limited institutional support, and emotional demands impact their professional quality of life. While international studies have explored the professional quality of life among various healthcare professionals, little is known about the contextual and psychosocial factors influencing the professional quality of life among audiologists, particularly in in low- and middle-income settings. PURPOSE: This study explored the factors influencing the professional quality of life

Younger adult women who had a stroke or at high stroke risk: Exploration of their experiences and needs.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, women, particularly younger and middle-aged (≤65 years), are disproportionately affected by stroke. Although the adoption of healthy lifestyle habits is integral for stroke risk factor modification, little is known about younger adult women who had a stroke or are at high risk of stroke-their lifestyle-related knowledge, behaviors, associated and influencing facilitators, and barriers to support brain health, which this study aimed to address. METHODS: A qualitative interpretivist design was employed that was part of a larger quality improvement mixed-methods study. Dat

Promoting Disability Inclusion Through an Expanded Conceptual Framework of the Learning Environment.

The inclusion of people with disabilities in medicine is imperative to ensuring a diverse, culturally adept physician workforce. Despite increasing representation in U.S. medical schools, medical students with disabilities (MSWD) continue to face considerable challenges in pursuing medical education due to systemic discrimination, entrenched biases, and insufficient support and program accessibility. To systematically address the disparities and challenges faced by MSWD, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive framework to design, implement, and evaluate the breadth of initiatives employe

Psychiatric correlates of child marriage before age 15: A case-control study from Turkiye.

OBJECTIVE: Child marriage gives rise to a wide range of problems for young girls whose psychosocial development is incomplete at the time of marriage. The experience of albinism in France: a qualitative study on dyads of parents and their adult child with albinism.

BACKGROUND: To date, almost no research on the psychosocial implications of albinism has been conducted in France and an exploration of albinism-related experiences could be beneficial, in order to better understand this condition. The aim of this study was to examine how French people with albinism and their parents live with and adapt to this condition in all the areas of their lives. METHODS: Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted with 9 parent-child dyads, each participating separately. Participants were recruited by convenience sampling, thanks to the combined efforts of a patie

Survivorship Guidance for Patients with Colorectal Cancer.

Effective therapy for treatment of colorectal cancer includes comprehensive and evidence-based therapies that may include a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and/or radiation. However, in order to provide patients with the highest quality of care, providers must consider all aspects of survivorship care including: surveillance for recurrence/second primaries, genetic counseling, psychosocial/physical late effects of cancer and its therapies, and preventative lifestyle strategies. Health systems, providers, and researchers need to identify systematic methods of addressing

Palliative care in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) and can be characterized by acute exacerbations or gradual worsening of neurological function and disability. The course of the disease is highly variable and unpredictable, however, there are short and long-term favorable and unfavorable predictive factors, which may provide some information about the future pattern of the disease. Palliative care in MS is directed at symptom management, psychosocial support, and rehabilitation. The goal in palliative care is to achieve a high quality of life.

Understanding Delusional Infestation: from pattern recognition to pathogenesis.

Delusional infestation (DI) is a psychocutaneous disorder marked by sensations of crawling and perceived fibers or foreign materials on the skin. Traditionally viewed as psychiatric, evidence now suggests a multifactorial pathogenesis involving dermatologic, neurologic, endocrine, psychosocial, and pharmacologic factors-most notably, striatal dopamine dysregulation. This review explores DI through a multidimensional lens, highlighting elevated striatal dopamine as a mechanism influenced by factors such as medication (e.g., amphetamines, dopamine agonists), iron deficiency, estrogen status, sub

Biobehavioral mechanisms of work-related upper extremity disorders: a new agenda for research and practice.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies provide support for the role of organizational and individual psychosocial stressors in work-related upper extremity disorders (WRUEDs). Despite this evidence, the biological plausibility of a relationship between exposure to various psychosocial and work organizational stressors and WRUEDs remains unclear METHODS: The Georgetown Symposium on Biobehavioral Mechanisms of Work-Related Upper Extremity Disorders was held in Washington D.C. on November 6-7, 2000 to improve the understanding of potential biobehavioral mechanisms, identify future areas for researc
