Associations between Experiences of Police Contact and Discrimination by the Police and Courts and Health Outcomes in a Representative Sample of Adults in New York City.

Communities marginalized because of racism, heterosexism, and other systems of oppression have a history of being aggressively policed, and in those contexts, researchers have observed associations between a range of negative experiences with police and poor physical, mental, and behavioral health outcomes. However, past studies have been limited in that experiences of police contacts were aggregated at the neighborhood level and, if police contacts were self-reported, the sample was not representative. To address these limitations, we employed NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene 2017 …

Those who tan and those who don't: A natural experiment on colorism.

Are darker-skinned workers discriminated against in the labor market? Studies using survey data have shown that darker skin tone is associated with increased labor market disadvantages. However, it is hard to refute the possibility that other factors correlated with skin tones might affect employment outcomes. To overcome this inherent limitation, we use a natural experiment: we utilize changes in one's own skin tone, generated by exposure to the sun, to explore the effect of skin tone on the tendency to be employed. We find that those people whose skin tone becomes darker by exposure to the s

Racial/ethnic inequities in diabetes mellitus: a narrative review.

Inequities in diabetes diagnosis, management, and outcomes are deeply rooted in social determinants of health and structural racism. Historical policies such as redlining and concentrated poverty in low-income neighborhoods have shaped environments characterized by limited access to healthy food and proper healthcare, which ultimately led to a disproportionate burden of diabetes in these populations. The consequences of these disparities for racial and ethnic minoritized groups include a lower ability to achieve glycemic targets, receive novel glucose-lowering agents, and/or have access to dia…

Racial Capitalism: A Fundamental Cause of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic Inequities in the United States.

Racial capitalism is a fundamental cause of the racial and socioeconomic inequities within the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) in the United States. The overrepresentation of Black death reported in Detroit, Michigan is a case study for this argument. Racism and capitalism mutually construct harmful social conditions that fundamentally shape COVID-19 disease inequities because they (a) shape multiple diseases that interact with COVID-19 to influence poor health outcomes; (b) affect disease outcomes through increasing multiple risk factors for poor, people of color, including racial resid…

Cisgender Black women living with HIV (BWLWH) face significant intersectional stigma, racism, and discrimination, contributing to lower adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Given the role of religion and spirituality in Black communities, we explored their influence on HIV treatment. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 BWLWH in Washington, DC ( M age = 52.7, SD = 15.95), living with HIV for an average of 26 years ( SD = 9.72); 33% were virally suppressed. Interviews averaged 52 min and revealed intersectional stigma from multiple sources that negatively affected ART adherence…
