Work-related musculoskeletal risk among refugees: recommendations for improvement to promote health and well-being.

Refugees fall under the umbrella term of immigrants. Whereas immigrants chose to leave their host country for positive reasons, refugees are pushed out due to war and fear of persecution. The work they pursue does not align with their education and experience and oftentimes leaves them vulnerable to increased health and safety hazards causing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Current publicly available resources and guidelines ignore their unique psychosocial profiles and homogenize refugees with all other workers. The resultant consequences are not only of concern to refugees but to healthcar…

Understanding the mental health consequences of family separation for refugees: Implications for policy and practice.

Consistent evidence documents the negative impacts of family separation on refugee mental health and concerns for the welfare of distant family members and desire to reunite with family members as priorities for refugees postmigration. Less is known about refugees' emic perspectives on their experiences of family separation. Using mixed methods data from a community-based mental health intervention study, we found that family separation was a major source of distress for refugees and that it was experienced in a range of ways: as fear for family still in harm's way, as a feeling of helplessnes…

Secondary psychotic features in refugees diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A substantial amount of refugees (10-30%) suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In Denmark there are different facilities specialised in psychiatric treatment of trauma-affected refugees. A previously published case report from such a facility in Denmark shows that some patients suffer from secondary psychotic symptoms alongside their PTSD. The aim of this study was to illustrate the characteristics and estimate the prevalence of psychotic features in a clinical population of trauma-affected refugees with PTSD. METHODS: Psychiatric records from 220 consecutive patient…

The interrelation between intestinal parasites and latent TB infections among newly resettled refugees in Texas.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has documented that parasite infection may increase vulnerability to TB among certain at risk populations. The purpose of this study was to identify whether an association exists between latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and intestinal parasite infection among newly resettled refugees in Texas while controlling for additional effects of region of origin, age and sex. METHODS: Data for all refugees screened for both TB and intestinal parasites between January 2010 and mid-October 2013 were obtained from the Texas Refugee Health Screening Program and were analyz…

Disease surveillance among newly arriving refugees and immigrants--Electronic Disease Notification System, United States, 2009.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Approximately 450,000 legal permanent immigrants and 75,000 refugees enter the United States annually after receiving required medical examinations by overseas panel physicians (physicians who follow the CDC medical screening guidelines provided to the U.S. Department of State). CDC has the regulatory responsibility for preventing the introduction, transmission, and spread of communicable diseases into the United States as well as for developing the guidelines, known as technical instructions, for the overseas medical examinations. Other conditions that are not infectious mi…

Prevalence and correlates of lifetime disordered gambling in Cambodian refugees residing in Long Beach, CA.

BACKGROUND: Research has suggested that disordered gambling is endemic to Cambodian refugees. Whereas earlier study of the prevalence and correlates of disordered gambling has relied on convenience sampling, this investigation used a subset of a sample representative of the largest Cambodian refugee community in the US. METHODS: Face-to-face interviews assessing gambling disorder were conducted with a subsample of persons (N = 127) participating in a broader study of the mental health of this community. RESULTS: 13.9% of participants met screening criteria for lifetime disordered gambling, i…

Congenital rubella syndrome in a child born to Liberian refugees: clinical and public health perspectives.

We describe a case of congenital rubella syndrome with typical stigmata in an infant born in New Hampshire to Liberian refugees. The infant's clinical specimens were tested for rubella. Rubella immunity status was sought for contacts. The infant's specimen cultures grew wild-type rubella virus; serum immunoglobulin M and G were positive. Eighteen of 20 contacts were rubella-immune. Family's transit history, mother's vaccination history, and infant's estimated gestational age supported congenital infection acquired overseas. Clinicians should maintain vigilance for congenital rubella syndrome i…

Mortality and cancer incidence in Vietnamese refugees in England and Wales: a follow-up study.

Mortality and cancer incidence were analysed in follow-up of a cohort of 3327 Vietnamese refugees who came to Britain after the end of the Vietnam war. Overall mortality of the refugees was very low compared to expectations based on England and Wales national rates: the all-cause standardized mortality ratio for males was 64 (95% confidence interval 52-77) and for females was 56 (95% confidence interval 44-71). This resulted particularly from very low mortality from ischaemic heart disease and colorectal cancer in each sex, and breast cancer in women. Mortality in the refugees was greatly incr…

Belief inflexibility reduces the impact of allostatic overload on psychotic-like experiences among Ukrainian refugees.

INTRODUCTION: Refugees are chronically exposed to cumulative stress, which may increase allostatic load (AL) and vulnerability to psychotic-like experiences (PLEs). Belief inflexibility, reflecting difficulties in revising beliefs in response to new information, may influence how physiological stress affects psychosis proneness. This study examined whether AL index interacts with cognitive biases and refugee status in predicting PLEs. METHODS: Sixty Ukrainian refugees and fifty matched controls underwent psychiatric evaluation, assessment of cognitive biases, and measurement of AL biomarkers.…

Coping mechanisms adopted following a suicide attempt among refugees in humanitarian settings within northern Uganda.

Most suicides happen following maladaptive coping among suicide survivors; however, coping mechanisms adopted by refugee suicide survivors, especially in Uganda, have hardly been studied. This study assessed the coping mechanisms adopted following suicide attempts among refugees in humanitarian settings in Northern Uganda. A concurrent mixed-methods design was used to study adult refugee-suicide survivors of South Sudanese origin. They were consecutively sampled across four settlements and engaged in structured, in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed in SPSS version 25 using descriptive stati…

Between Patriots and Refugees: Negotiating Displacement With the State in (Post-)Second World War China.

This article examines how non-elite Chinese navigated displacement in relation to the state during the decades of war and revolution in the 1930s and 1940s. The conflicts, including the Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War, created displacement and complicated identities. This article reveals the diversity of wartime identities, beyond the well-studied identification with the nation and native place. It highlights the reinvention of 'righteous people' as a survival tactic to exploit the discourse of nationalism and the complexity of 'refugees' not just as a social category or status, bu…

Speaking the Self: How Native-Language Psychotherapy Enables Change in Refugees: A Person-Centered Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, countless forcibly displaced individuals facing not only material loss, but also deep psychological distress, have sought refuge across Europe. For those traumatized by war, the absence of a shared language in therapy can hinder healing and exacerbate suffering. While cultural diversity in psychotherapy has gained recognition, the role of native-language communication-especially from a person-centered perspective-remains underexplored. METHODS: This narrative review with a thematic analysis examines whether and how psychotherapy in the mother

Predictors of Traumatization Among Humanitarian Aid Workers Working With Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Türkiye.

Refugees and asylum-seekers flee their countries due to conflict, violence or persecution and seek safety in another country. Professionals working with refugees in host countries are being exposed to the narratives of their traumatic experiences, an important risk factor for vicarious posttraumatic stress. The current study examined predictors for traumatic stress in humanitarian aid workers working with refugees and asylum seekers in Türkiye. We surveyed 156 participants (67.3% women) from various disciplines (psychologists, social workers, interpreters, lawyers etc.) to examine their trauma…
