Peer aesthetic and social perceptions of anterior open bite in children.

This cross-sectional study aimed to assess children's aesthetic and social perceptions of anterior open bite (AOB). The sample comprised 272 evaluators, divided into three age groups: 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12 years old. Artificial intelligence was used to generate the children's facial images, and Adobe Photoshop was used to modify their smiles, obtaining paired images of AOB and normal overbite. Participants completed a questionnaire that included images of children in their age range. An illustrated 5-point Likert scale was used to assess aesthetic rating. Social and aesthetic perceptions were ev

Social-emotional learning and adolescent mental health: Indirect effects and the moderating role of peer victimization.

This study aimed to (a) examine the direct and indirect effects of social-emotional learning (SEL)-infused instruction on secondary student mental health through social-emotional skills (SEL) and student-to-student relationships and (b) explore the moderating role of peer victimization on this relationship. Cross-sectional data were collected from a racially and ethnically diverse sample of 546 students in sixth-12th grades from the southeast region of the United States. Participants completed electronic surveys of their peer victimization experiences, relationships with students, SEL skills,

Pedagogical intentionality in walking football: fostering sustained participation and development among older adults.

The growing population aging demands physical practices that promote health, inclusion, and autonomy. In this context, Walking Football (WF) emerges as an adapted sport for older adults, characterized by the absence of running and physical contact, creating a safe and inclusive environment. Although the physical, psychological, and social benefits of WF are well documented, less is known about how pedagogical intentionality is enacted in practice and how it supports sustained participation and development. Therefore, this study examined how pedagogical intentionality was enacted through pedago

Does education shield against vaccine hesitancy? Evidence from the East-West divide.

Education is among the strongest correlates of health behavior, yet its relationship with vaccine acceptance varies sharply across European contexts. Using the SHARE COVID-19 Survey 2 (summer 2021) linked to rich pre-pandemic data from SHARE and SHARELIFE - a longitudinal survey of adults aged 50 and above across 27 European countries - we document a striking East-West asymmetry: schooling is strongly and positively associated with COVID-19 vaccine take-up in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) but only weakly related in Western and Central Europe (WCE). We argue that this contrast is consistent

Justifying violence and hostility through discourse: A critical discursive psychology analysis of anti-refugee hostility on social media during disasters.

Disasters create a fertile context for the scapegoating of minority groups, yet the discursive strategies used to legitimize this hostility remain understudied. This study addresses this gap by analysing how anti-refugee sentiment is discursively justified on social media during a crisis. We investigated how language on social media is used to legitimize hostility against refugees during disasters. Using a critical discursive psychology (CDP) approach, we analysed 345 posts on X that targeted Afghan refugees during the devastating July 2021 wildfires in Türkiye. Our analysis identifies three k

Gen Z and FoMO: A Configurational Analysis of Psychological Factors and Digital Dependence.

OBJECTIVE: This research investigates the configurational antecedents of multifaceted Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in Generation Z. The research explores the complex interdependencies of psychological factors and digital dependence (problematic social media use) factors giving rise to FoMO in Gen Z. METHOD: We used a survey research design combined with fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to examine the phenomenon among the Gen Z (n = 100) from a configurational rather than traditional linear perspective. RESULTS: Leveraging evidence from Gen Z social media users, the analysis d

Visible Pregnancy, Invisible HIV: How Social Norms Shape Adolescents Protection Choice in Kenya and Nigeria.

Adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa continue to face a high burden of HIV, with adolescent girls and young women disproportionately affected. Yet despite major investments in HIV education, testing, condoms, and biomedical prevention such as PrEP, reductions in new infections remain slow in countries like Kenya and Nigeria. This viewpoint argues that current prevention strategies overlook the social realities that shape adolescent decision-making. Drawing on Bicchieri's Social Norms Theory and field experience, we highlight how visible sanctions tied to pregnancy, reputation, and respectability

Early speech- and language-impaired children: linguistic, literacy, and social outcomes.

The aim of this study was to follow-up prospectively a cohort of preschool children originally recruited from successive referrals to speech and language therapy community clinics and to investigate their linguistic, literacy, and social outcomes at 7 to 10 years of age. Three hundred and fifty children aged 84 to 113 months (mean age 99.9mo [SD 5.4mo]) were singletons from monolingual backgrounds where there was concern about their speech and language development. Children who had severe learning difficulties, autism, oromotor deficits, dysfluency, or dysphonia were excluded. Altogether 196 (

Six-month follow-up of the 'Mi Mejor Plan' school-based prevention program: a pilot cluster randomized controlled trial among early adolescents in Chile.

BACKGROUND: School-based preventive interventions for adolescent substance use often show limited short-term behavioral effects, with evidence suggesting that sustained impacts may depend on continued exposure and reinforcement strategies such as booster sessions. However, few studies have examined the longitudinal effects of booster implementation on substance use and related psychosocial outcomes in culturally adapted interventions. METHODS: We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial to evaluate the longitudinal impact of a culturally adapted school-based prevention program among si

Attitudes of healthcare professionals towards the use of parenteral methotrexate in rheumatoid arthritis patients: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Methotrexate is a cornerstone disease-modifying antirheumatic drug for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), effectively controlling disease activity and reducing cardiovascular mortality. Despite its efficacy, parenteral methotrexate, which offers higher bioavailability, faster response, and fewer gastrointestinal side effects compared to oral administration, remains underutilized in clinical practice. Understanding the factors influencing its utilization is critical to improving RA management. AIM: To explore the barriers and enablers towards using parenteral methotrexate in rheumatoid a

Self-injurious behaviour: limbic dysregulation and stress effects in an animal model.

BACKGROUND: Self-injurious behaviour (SIB) is prevalent in neurodevelopmental disorders, but its expression is highly variable within, and between diagnostic categories. This raises questions about the factors that contribute to aetiology and expression of SIB. Expression of SIB is generally described in relation to social reinforcement. However, variables that predispose vulnerability have not been as clearly characterised. This study reports the aetiology and expression of self-injury in an animal model of pemoline-induced SIB. It describes changes in gross neuronal activity in selected brai

The effects of social isolation and problematic social media use on well-being in a sample of young Italian gamblers.

INTRODUCTION: Gambling, especially when problematic, has been observed to have a significant impact on mental health, social relationships, and well-being in general. Social isolation and problematic social media use (PSMU) have also been identified as risk factors affecting psychological well-being, with a potential link to gambling that may intensify the impact on well-being, especially among adolescents. However, the interaction between these factors remains poorly explored, especially in younger populations. This study aims to investigate the effects of social isolation and problematic soc

Convergence and divergence in adolescent- and parent-reported daily parental positive reinforcement: Dynamic links with adolescent emotional and behavioral problems.

Parents and adolescents often hold concordant and discordant views on parenting behaviors. Scant research has explored short-term within-family dynamics of parent-adolescent congruency and discrepancy on parental positive reinforcement on a micro timescale. Adopting a month-long daily diary design, we examined the convergence and divergence among 86 dyads of adolescents (Mage = 14.5 years, 55% female, 45% non-White) and one of their parents (Mage = 43.7 years, 72% female, 38% non-White) on their perceived daily parental positive reinforcement behaviors and the links to adolescents' daily emoti

Abnormal reinforcement learning in a mice model of autism induced by prenatal exposure to valproic acid.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) display dysfunction in learning from environmental stimulus that have positive or negative emotional values, posing obstacles to their everyday life. Unfortunately, mechanisms of the dysfunction are still unclear. Although early intervention for ASD victims based on reinforcement learning are commonly used, the mechanisms and characteristics of the improvement are also unknown. By using a mice model of ASD produced by prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA), the present work discovered a delayed response-reinforcer forming, and an impaired habit

Development, extinction and reinstatement of morphine withdrawal-induced conditioned place aversion in rats.

The motivational component of drug withdrawal may contribute to drug seeking and relapse through the negative reinforcement-based process. Here, we used conditioned place aversion (CPA) induced by naloxone-precipitated morphine withdrawal to measure the aversive effects. Using an unbiased conditioning paradigm, we treated rats with morphine hydrochloride [(10 mg/kg intraperitoneally (i.p.)] twice per day (at 08:00 and 20:00) for 6.5 days (from day 1 to day 7 morning), while gave them naloxone (0.3 mg/kg i.p.) on day 6, a precipitated withdrawal paired with a compartment that caused CPA to the

Errorless compliance training with physically abusive mothers: a single-case approach.

OBJECTIVE: "Errorless compliance training" is a recently developed, success-based approach for teaching children to comply with parental requests without the use of coercive consequences. Two mothers were trained to use this intervention to reduce severe child defiance that was precipitating mother/child confrontations and physical abuse. METHOD: To determine probability of child compliance to specific requests, we observed mothers delivering requests to their child. We then developed a hierarchy of compliance probabilities for each child. Mothers were trained to deliver a high density of Lev
