Behavioral treatment for migraine prophylaxis in adults: Moderator analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: While growing evidence suggests the efficacy of various behavioral approaches to the preventive treatment of migraine, it remains largely unclear which behavioral interventions are indicated for which type of patient. This exploratory study aimed to identify moderators for the outcome between migraine-specific cognitive-behavioral therapy and relaxation training. METHODS: In this secondary analysis of an open-label randomized controlled trial, the data of N  =  77 adults (completer sample) with migraine (mean age = 47.4, SD = 12.2, 88% female), who were allocated to either migrain

Skeletal muscle relaxants as adjunctive pain control following cardiothoracic surgery: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Multimodal pain control following cardiothoracic surgery remains a focus in international guidelines. We hypothesise that non-depolarising skeletal muscle relaxants can prove to be a useful adjunct for this population. METHODS/ANALYSIS: This systematic review will focus on human adult studies of pain control using muscle relaxants within 1 week following cardiac and thoracic surgery available in PubMed, Cochrane Central, Web of Science and EMBASE. Target studies will have a primary focus on measured effects on quality of pain control and reduction in opioid usage. Studies that i

Efficacy of non-pharmacological interventions for pediatric primary headaches: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Primary headaches are common in children and adolescents; however, the comparative efficacy of multiple non-pharmacological interventions remains unclear. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of different non-pharmacological interventions for pediatric primary headaches using a network meta-analysis. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Embase databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated non-pharmacological interventions for pediatric primary headaches, from database inception to August 1, 2026. Application of the relaxation technique in general hospital psychiatry.

The present article demonstrates the clinical application and the efficacy of relaxation techniques in general hospital psychiatry in Japan. During April to December 1993, 20 patients were treated with progressive muscle relaxation and "modified' autogenic training therapies. The targeted symptoms were anxiety attacks (or panic attacks), neurotic insomnia, hyperventilation syndrome, agoraphobia, chronic pain, and distress. Most patients (18/20) improved rapidly with the use of these techniques and their excellence encourages increased use in general hospital psychiatry for the following reason

Biofeedback therapy for spastic dysphonia.

Spastic dysphonia is a disorder of phonation which is characterized by a strained, creaking, and choked vocal attack, a tense and squeezed voice sound. Spastic dysphonia in a functional voice disorder can be classified into two types from the viewpoint of activities of the extrinsic and intrinsic laryngeal muscle groups. A functional voice disorder pertaining to abnormal activities of the intrinsic and extrinsic laryngeal muscles results in spastic dysphonia. The adductor spastic dysphonia may be due to abnormal actions of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles as such is relieved by sectioning of th

Multimodal psychological intervention improves psychological well-being and inflammatory profiles in patients with diabetic nephropathy.

Patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN) often experience negative emotions and a decline in quality of life, conditions in which the neuro-endocrine-immune axis plays a crucial role. In this study, we explored the effects of an eight-week multimodal psychological intervention, incorporating cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness meditation, and relaxation training, on DN patients. Ninety participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group, a sham intervention group, or a control group. The sham intervention group received nonspecific contact of equivalent duration, while the contro

Virtual Reality-Based Relaxation Training and Symptom Improvement Among Inpatients With Depressive Disorders: Retrospective Nonrandomized Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) is increasingly used for adjunctive relaxation training in psychiatric care. However, evidence remains limited among hospitalized patients with depressive disorders, particularly in routine inpatient settings in China, and little is known about whether improvement varies by session frequency. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study examined whether adjunctive VR-based relaxation training was associated with changes in depressive and anxiety symptoms among inpatients with depressive disorders and whether improvement differed by session frequency. METHODS: We condu

Learning from our treatment failures.

Barton and Blanchard's report that multicomponent behavioral treatment fails to modify chronic daily headaches is discussed with reference to the effectiveness of behavioral and drug treatments for chronic tension-type headache, the distinction between chronic tension-type headache and chronic migraine, and the psychophysiology of episodic vs. persistent pain (K. A. Barton & E. B. Blanchard, 2001). It is suggested that the treatment of chronic daily headache can be improved through research on the benefits of combined behavioral and drug therapy, the psychophysiology of persistent pain, and me

Let's talk about sleep: a systematic review of psychological interventions to improve sleep in college students.

Sleep problems are a common occurrence in college students. Insomnia, nightmares and impaired sleep quality lead to several mental health issues, as well as impaired academic performance. Although different sleep programmes exist, a systematic overview comparing their effectiveness is still missing. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of psychological interventions to improve sleep in college students. Seven databases were searched from November to December 2016 (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cinahl, Cochrane Library, PubMed, OpenSigle). The search string included search terms from
