Rhodopsin kinase, once thought to be a retinal enzyme, was recently found at high levels in the pineal gland. In the present study the developmental pattern and the regulation by environmental lighting of this enzyme in both tissues was studied in the rat. The possible involvement of calcium in the regulation of retinal serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity was investigated using eye cups of Xenopus laevis cultured in defined medium. Omitting CaCl2 from the culture medium completely inhibited the dark-dependent increase of NAT activity at night. Combined hamartomas of the retinal pigment epithelium and sensory retina are congenital abnormalities which may occur anywhere in the fundus. This case report presents a young, otherwise healthy male with a unilateral example of combined hamartoma of the retinal pigment epithelium and sensory retina located in the juxtapapillary and macular areas.

Gyrate atrophy of the retina and choroid is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by progressive retinal degeneration and ornithine aminotransferase deficiency. In cases of incomplete closure of the retinal defect following retinal detachment surgery photocoagulation may render a second surgical intervention unnecessary. Primary cultures and membranes fractions from chick embryo retina bind iodinated alpha-bungarotoxin, a highly selective ligand for nicotinic acetylcholine receptors from skeletal muscle and fish electric organ. A case of hyperornithinemia and gyrate atrophy of choroid and retina has been observed in a 3-year and 9-month-old girl. She presented also mild mental retardation, delayed language development and speech defects. The restriction of protein intake to a minimum of 0.8 g/kg/day induced a significant reduction of plasma ornithine levels. In some of the previous reports of the syndrome, a deficient ornithine-ketoacid transaminase activity has been found in cultured fibroblasts.

Diffuse retinal irradiation by visible light produces in the rat the death of visual cells and pigment epithelium. Typically, cage illumination of 1500 lux from fluorescent light through a green filter leads to severe damage when continued for 40 hours. Vitamin A deficiency protects against this damage but experiments show that retinol released by light from rhodopsin is probably not the toxic agent.
