PURPOSE: To report a case of IgG4-related ophthalmic disease, which presented with papillitis and subretinal deposits.
METHODS: Observational case report with multimodal imaging.
RESULTS: A 52-year-old man with a history of persistent lymphadenopathy presented with decreased vision in his left eye. Funduscopic examination demonstrated cuticular drusen in both eyes and florid edema of the left optic nerve, along with scattered circumscribed grey-yellow subretinal deposits that were distinct from the cuticular drusen. Swept-source optical coherence tomography demonstrated a hyper-reflective su

Fabry Disease (FD) is a rare X-linked lysosomal storage disorder characterized by systemic and ocular involvement. It has been described an increasing in retinal and conjunctival vessel tortuosity and this feature represents an important marker for the disease. Currently, there is not an objective method to measure and quantify this parameter. We tested a new semi-automatic software measuring retinal and conjunctival vessel tortuosity from eye fundus and conjunctival digital images in a group of FD patients. We performed an observational case-control study evaluating three mathematical paramet

The availability of noninvasive high-resolution imaging technology, the immune-suppressive nature of the subretinal space, and the existence of surgical techniques that permit transplantation surgery to be a safe procedure all render the eye an ideal organ in which to begin cell-based therapy in the central nervous system. A number of early stage clinical trials are underway to assess the safety and feasibility of cell-based therapy for retinal blindness. Cell-based therapy using embryonic stem cell-derived differentiated cells (e.g., retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)), neural progenitor cells,

The use of intravitreal bevacizumab in pediatric retinal and uveitic disease has become more widespread over the past decade. This article serves to outline the rationale underlying the use of intravitreal bevacizumab, and which disease entities it should be appropriately thought of as a primary or solo therapy, as opposed to an adjuvant one. Also presented is the relevant literature regarding each of these retinopathies.

PURPOSE: Relapsing ocular inflammation occurs in about 70% of patients with Behçet's disease (BD) and can lead to permanent loss of vision. Neovascularization of the optic disc (NVD) or elsewhere in the retina (NVE) is a relatively uncommon but severe complication that lacks standardized treatment.
METHODS: We report on the therapeutic use of anti-TNF monoclonal antibodies for BD-associated NVD and NVE in one pediatric patient (subcutaneous adalimumab) and one young man (intravenous infliximab). Also, we review the previously published experience on biologic therapeutic options, namely anti-T

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We aimed to comprehensively describe a spectrum of retinal vessel measures including fractal dimension (Df) and their associations with indices of coronary artery disease (CAD) extent and severity, as well as hypertension and diabetes.
METHODS: The Australian Heart Eye Study (AHES) is an observational study that surveyed 1680 participants presenting to a tertiary referral hospital for the evaluation of potential CAD by coronary angiography. A range of newer retinal vessel geometric measures (Df, curvature tortuosity, and branching angle) were quantified from retinal photo

BACKGROUND: This is the first report of vitreous surgery for traction retinal detachment in a patient with type III Gaucher disease with multiple vitreous opacities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 16-year-old boy who was diagnosed with Gaucher disease at age two and was undergoing enzyme replacement therapy presented with numerous white opacities of varying sizes in the vitreous bodies of both eyes. Visual acuity was 20/40 in the right eye and 20/2000 in the left eye. The retina of the left eye was completely detached, and vitreous surgery was performed.
RESULTS: Liquefaction of the vitreous body

BACKGROUND: Dense deposit disease and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome are often caused by Complement Factor H (CFH) mutations. This study describes the retinal abnormalities in dense deposit disease and, for the first time, atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome. It also reviews our understanding of drusen pathogenesis and their relevance for glomerular disease.
METHODS: Six individuals with dense deposit disease and one with atypical haemolytic uremic syndrome were studied from 2 to 40 years after presentation. Five had renal transplants. All four who had genetic testing had CFH mutations. I

OBJECTIVE: The branching pattern of retinal vessels may be affected in Behçet's Disease (BD). Fractal analysis can be used as a new method to quantify the changes of the vascular branching pattern. In this study, we examined, for the first time, the relationship between retinal fractal dimension (D f) and retinal vascular changes seen in patients with BD.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 10 new cases of BD with clinically ocular involvement. Color fundus images taken from both eyes of the participants have been analyzed, and D f of the whole retinal vasculature was quantified us

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia worldwide; it is characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive functions and memory, resulting from synaptic and cell loss, and accompanied by a strong neuroinflammatory response. Besides the vast progress in the understanding of the pathophysiology of AD in the past decades, there is still no effective treatment. Moreover, the diagnosis occurs usually at an advanced stage of the disease, where the neurological damage has already occurred. The identification of biomarkers that would allow an early diagnosis of this disease is a

OBJECTIVE: Melanopsin retinal ganglion cells (mRGCs) are photoreceptors driving circadian photoentrainment, and circadian dysfunction characterizes Alzheimer disease (AD). We investigated mRGCs in AD, hypothesizing that they contribute to circadian dysfunction.
METHODS: We assessed retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in 21 mild-moderate AD patients, and in a subgroup of 16 we evaluated rest-activity circadian rhythm by actigraphy. We studied postmortem mRGCs by immunohistochemistry in retinas, and axons in optic nerve cross-sections of 14 neuropath
