Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is uncommon. Eight percent of cases are associated with malignancies. The pathogenesis of cancer related RPF (MRPF) is unknown. It may be originated from a desmoplastic reaction of the retroperitoneum to the presence of malignant cells, to the action of cytokines secreted by the tumor or a reactive inflammation. We report a case of retroperitoneal fibrosis due to Schistosoma Japonicum in patient with urothelial carcinoma. Retroperitoneal fibrosis was observed in a-83-year-old man during examinations for postrenal renal failure. Urinary ascites in adults is usually secondary to iatrogenic or traumatic injuries. A case of a 69-year-old male with abdominal pain and decreased renal function is described. Ultrasound showed bilateral hydronephrosis and ascites. Computed tomography revealed retroperitoneal fibrosis complicated by a rupture at the right ureteropelvic junction and urine extravasation in the perirenal and intraperitoneal spaces. Delayed scans showed leaking of contrast media from the anterior perirenal space to the peritoneal cavity. The urinary ascites resolved using a double-J stent.

PURPOSE: Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis is an uncommon disease of unknown etiology that may involve the ureters and other retroperitoneal structures. Surgical ureterolysis as well as medical treatment with steroids have been used to treat these patients. However, there is no agreement as to the dose and duration of steroid. The case was a 73-year-old male who presented with bilateral hydronephrosis due to retroperitoneal fibrosis. Later he became anuric and nephrostomy was constructed. However, with no medical treatment, the hydronephrosis disappeared. Such a spontaneous regression is rare and the etiology is discussed.

This article describe the case of a 38-year-old woman with simultaneous involvement of the thyroid by Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Riedels's disease, associated with retroperitoneal fibrosis and lipidic endarteritis. According to a large review of the literature on the occurrence of this rare condition the difficulty in sharply defining the two thyroid processes is discussed. The chronology of the events is analyzed, and etiopathogenic hypotheses are listed with emphasis on the relationship between the vascular lesions and the onset of the fibrosing process.

Delay in diagnosis is common in retroperitoneal fibrosis because of the non-specific clinical presentation. Ultrasonography combined with color Doppler imaging is a rapid and practical method in the early diagnosis and during follow-up. We report the case of a 37-year-old woman who developed renal failure secondary to obstruction by renal intrahilar retroperitoneal fibrosis. Her disease proved to be sensitive only to high-dose immunosuppression. Our case illustrates an unusual course of this disease and the role of immunosuppression in its management.

Thirteen patients who received surgical treatment for histologically proven retroperitoneal fibrosis were reviewed retrospectively. All patients had idiopathic disease, bilateral in 11 patients. Elevated ESR occurred in 12 patients and in eight patients the hemoglobin value was decreased preoperatively. Sixty patients with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis presenting between 1965 and 1984 are reviewed. Their mean age at presentation was 56 years and the male:female ratio was 3:1. The commonest presenting symptoms were flank and abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea and polyuria. Physical examination was usually normal, expect for the presence of hypertension.
