Fifty-one Rickettsia tsutsugamushi isolates from small mammals collected in central Peninsular Malaysia serologically characterized by direct immunofluorescence using eight prototype strains. Karp-related (TA763, TA686, TA716) antigens were found in 90.2% of the isolates.

An epidemiological survey of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Senegal revealed the presence of numerous Phlebotomus duboscqi in the entrances of rodent burrows. Two P. duboscqi out of 45 females dissected showed infection of the gut by promastigotes which could be cultured on NNN medium.

Methods for mass preparation of crude antigen and exoantigen of Trypanosoma gambiense from experimentally infected Cricetomys gambianus are described. The size of this animal and the hyperparasitism obtained make it a remarkable source of trypanosomian antigens.

Blood and organ smears from 24 of 98 ground squirrels (Xerus erythropus) from the Sudan were infected with a trypanosome resembling Trypanosoma (Herpetosoma) xeri. The developmental stages are described from the liver of one heavily infected ground squirrel. Multiplication was by binary fission and numerous triangular amastigotes, sphaeromastogotes and trypomastigotes were observed. A tentative development cycle in the final host is presented.

Examination of blood films from six species of rodents and lagomorphs on Nantucket Island disclosed infections with Babesia microti in all of five Microtus pennsylvanicus (field mice) and 31 of 39 Peromyscus leucopus (white-footed or deer mice). Six human cases of clinical babesiosis have recently been diagnosed on the island.

The authors present the results of bacteriological and serological study for tularemia of 498 lemmings caught in Taimyr. Positive results were revealed in 4 out of 98 sera examined in the indirect hemagglutination test. In carrying out 67 biological tests on albino mice there were isolated for the first time in the Soviet Union 6 cultures of the causative agent of tularemia from the spleen of lemmings. By morphological, cultural and virulent properties the cultures obtained failed to differ from those isolated in other regions of the Soviet Union, and, consequently, we referred to the holoarct

The genus Litomosoides Chandler, 1931, includes species that as adults occur in the thoracic and abdominal cavity of mammalian hosts and are … identification of a single host-switching event involving the disparate lineages of Chiroptera and Rodentia offers a framework to reconstruct the gene evolution and diversification of this lineage after the host-switching event. This will help in predicting the ability of these parasites to infect sympatric mammals.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of Leptotrombidium deliense among different small mammal hosts in some areas of Yunnan province. … rders. Our results showed that Leptotrombidium delienses were mainly collected from Insectivora and Rodentia. Leptotrombidium deliense had long been considered as the dominant species of chigger mites and the main vector of tsutsugamushi disease in Yunnan province of China, but our results seemed not thoroughly supporting this point of view.
CONCLUSION: T …

Zoonotic virus emergence is a continued threat to global health, though more than two-thirds originate in wildlife. Within natural reservoirs, bats and rodents are host to a remarkable diversity of highly pathogenic viruses, including coronaviruses, filoviruses, hantaviruses, and more. Yet, reservoir hosts rarely develop disease. In bats, functional adaptations related to inflammasome activation, cell death, and cytokine storm have been noted, while maintaining potent interferon and restriction factor activity. Similarly, in rodent reservoirs, chronic infection with hantaviruses is associated

Hantaviruses are a diverse and widespread group of zoonotic viruses under the Orthohantavirus genus that can cause severe acute cardiopulmonary or renal disease. Hantavirus species are grouped generally as either New World or Old World based on geographic distribution, which is influenced by their respective host reservoir including rodents. Although there is no specific treatment for hantaviruses, recognizing clinical presentation and interpreting laboratory results for case identification can improve patient management. Here we review the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic

Diabetes and chronic hyperglycemia exert a profound impact on the central nervous system, significantly increasing the risk of cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disease. This neurological decline is driven by a complex interplay of molecular and cellular mechanisms, including dysregulated insulin signaling, impaired cerebral glucose metabolism, excitotoxic glutamate accumulation, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. Collectively, these metabolic stressors compromise synaptic integrity and plasticity, promoting pathological hallmarks such as amyloid-beta accumulation, tau hyperphos
