INTRODUCTION: Although limited, recent research suggests that contact sport participation might have an adverse long-term effect on brain health. Further work is required to determine whether this includes an increased risk of neurodegenerative disease and/or subsequent changes in cognition and behaviour. BACKGROUND: In elite sports, concussion is common and recurrent, especially in high-speed contact or collision sports such as american and australian football, ice hockey and rugby. Mental health symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance) are often reported by former elite athletes, with prevalence ranging from 16% for distress to 26% for anxiety/depression. This article focuses on the potential relationship between sports career-related concussion and mental health symptoms in former elite athletes.

We present a case of a high-level rugby player with severe groin pain following a partial rupture of his left adductor longus enthesis during a game. Conservative treatment proved unsuccessful and the athlete had persistent symptoms, affecting his quality of life and ability to play sports. Further assessments revealed a large bony spur/enthesophyte at adductor longus origin. The patient underwent a successful surgical resection of the active bone formation.

Acute compartment syndrome is an emergent condition characterized by increased pressure in a noncompliant fascial compartment, resulting in ischemia of the muscles and nerves. It is most commonly caused by a traumatic etiology but rarely can be caused by an atraumatic etiology, resulting in a confusing clinical scenario. We present a case of a 15-year-old sedentary teenager diagnosed with acute exertional medial compartment syndrome of the foot, initially diagnosed with MRI, following two days of rugby practice.

A case is reported of a 37-year-old man who developed paraesthesia in the distribution of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve following an injury to the upper cervical spine during a game of rugby. The central pathways of the trigeminal nerve are discussed and it is proposed that mandibular fibres descended beyond their expected level in the spinal trigeminal nucleus, and that it was these fibres which were compressed in the unstable dislocation at the atlanto-axial joint producing the paraesthesia described. Other remote anatomical explanations for the paraesthesia are considered.

We describe a giant unruptured acquired aneurysm of the noncoronary sinus of Valsalva, which was detected incidentally in a 30-year-old rugby player with clinical suspicion of dermatomyositis. Sixty-four-slice cardiac computed tomography showed a giant aneurysm (diameters: 91 x 78 x 100 mm) of noncoronary sinus of Valsalva compressing both atrial chambers. The patient underwent cardiac surgery according to the Tirone David technique based on the information provided by cardiac computed tomography.
