The acute effects of alcohol on state rumination in the laboratory.

RATIONALE: Rumination is a repetitive, negative, self-focused thinking style associated with various forms of psychopathology. Recent studies suggest that rumination increases craving for alcohol and predicts harmful drinking and alcohol-related problems. However, the acute effects of alcohol on rumination have not been previously studied. It is proposed that alcohol may reduce ruminative thinking through decreasing negative mood. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we aimed to test the previously unexplored effects of acute alcohol consumption on rumination in a hazardous drinking population.

Current Challenges for Fasciolicide Treatment in Ruminant Livestock.

Pharmacological treatment remains essential to control fasciolosis in areas where infection is endemic. However, there are major constraints to treating food-producing animals. Of particular concern is the lack of flukicides for treating early Fasciola infections in ruminant livestock in some countries. In addition, the information provided in package leaflets, particularly regarding withdrawal periods, is often incomplete, confusing, and/or contradictory. International regulatory bodies should harmonize the use of flukicides in livestock in favor of fairer, safer international trade. In addit

Sustainable Approaches to Parasite Control in Ruminant Livestock.

It is increasingly difficult to manage and control gastrointestinal nematode parasites in pasture-based ruminant livestock operations because of the high prevalence of anthelmintic resistance. Anthelmintics should be combined with alternative forms of control. Sustainable tools include copper oxide wire particles and condensed tannin-rich plants, which target primarily Haemonchus contortus in small ruminants. Nematophagous fungi reduce larvae on pasture and target nematode larvae in feces of most livestock species. In addition, and perhaps most importantly, genetic selection focuses on parasit…

The breeding structure for the small ruminant resources in India.

Intense selection for a few desired traits has resulted in reduction of the effective population size (Ne) in most of the plant and livestock populations across the world. The objective of the research was to assess the impact of Ne on the genetic architecture of the population in a simulated data with variable Ne for general population under selection. Along with this, the estimate of Ne and its ratio to adult breeding population (NB) in the census data of small ruminants of India were also investigated. Results indicated that the average inbreeding ([Formula: see text]) decreases with increa…

Reindeer Veterinary Care for Small Ruminant Practitioners.

There are hundreds of small reindeer operations scattered across the continental United States. These facilities house small groups of reindeer, typically between 2 and 30 animals. Small ruminant practitioners often are called on to help diagnose and treat a variety of conditions in these reindeer herds. This article discusses the restraint, anesthesia, reproductive management, common diseases, and problems that a veterinarian may encounter when providing care for Rangifer species.

Rumination syndrome: when to suspect and how to treat.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Rumination syndrome is a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by effortless regurgitation of recently ingested food. The disorder is rare, but likely under-recognized and leads to impaired quality of life among those affected. This review discusses recent studies which examined the pathophysiology, diagnoses and therapy of rumination syndrome. RECENT FINDINGS: The pathogenesis of rumination syndrome remains incompletely understood. Therapeutic options, which appear effective, include behavioral therapy with diaphragmatic breathing and pharmacotherapy with baclofen. A ran

Rumination Disorder: An Unexplained Case of Recurrent Vomiting.

Rumination disorder or rumination syndrome is an infrequent clinical presentation reported in infants and young children as well as adults worldwide. Studies calculating prevalence and etiological considerations are very few, and the scientific literature mostly consists of anecdotal case reports and series. Awareness of this clinical entity is obscured by presentations mimicking upper gastrointestinal disorders, mostly recurrent vomiting. The repetitive, voluntary, habitual nature of this disorder is vulnerable to be missed out if not looked for specifically in the history. Here lies the impo

The metacognitions about self-critical rumination questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Self-criticism refers to a series of persistent and negative self-judgements, often involuntary, that an individual makes about themselves. Recent research has explored the possibility that self-criticism can lead to a more perseverative style of thinking called self-critical rumination. There is evidence that self-critical rumination may be a separate construct from other forms of rumination, such as depressive rumination and post-event processing. Research has indicated that metacognitions, beliefs that individuals have about their internal experiences and how to control them, ma

Cognitive Impairments in Unipolar Depression: The Impact of Rumination.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with impairments in several cognitive domains. People with depression also tend to focus on and think about their problems ("ruminate") more than people without depression. Recent studies indicate that depressive rumination is connected to cognitive impairments in MDD. However, there is little scientific understanding of the role of rumination in these deficits. SAMPLING AND METHODS: The current study examined the performance of 62 outpatients suffering from unipolar major depression with a low tendency to ruminate versus outpatients w

Ruminant neurological disease: a retrospective cohort study.

Between January 2006 and June 2016, 96 ruminants with neurological signs were donated to the Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health and Food Safety (SCPAHFS), University of Glasgow, by veterinarians in the field representing 5.4 per cent of all submissions. Forty-seven different neurological presenting signs were reported with 79 per cent of the donated patients presenting with abnormal gait. All cases presenting with abnormalities in more than 4 out of 10 neurological categories died or were euthanased on welfare grounds. Calves were significantly more likely to present with neurologica…

Ruminative subtypes and impulsivity in risk for suicidal behavior.

Rumination has been previously linked to negative psychological outcomes, including depression and suicidal behavior. However, there has been conflicting research on whether or not two different subtypes of rumination - brooding and reflection - are more or less maladaptive. The present research sought to (1) examine whether individuals high in brooding but lower in reflection would show higher trait and behavioral impulsivity, relative to individuals low in brooding and low in reflection; and (2) examine impulsivity as a mediator of the relation between ruminative subtypes and suicidal ideati

Internal switching and backward inhibition in depression and rumination.

Prior research has suggested that impairments of switching abilities are associated with depression as well as rumination. Backward inhibition (BI) refers to the ability to inhibit the processing of previously relevant information and is demonstrated to be one of the key mechanisms underlying switching abilities. However, the association between BI in internal switching and depression/rumination remains uninvestigated. To examine this association, a modified Internal Shifting Task (IST) was administered to a sample of dysphoric and healthy control undergraduates. Results showed that depressive

The dangers of rumination on the road: Predictors of risky driving.

Past studies found many different types of factors can influence dangerous driving behaviors. Driver inattention, such as driving under the influence or using a cell phone while driving, was found to contribute to risky driving behaviors. Rumination is a cognitive process that may also contribute to risky driving behaviors due to its influence on attention and limited executive processes. The present study explores the potential role of rumination in dangerous driving behavior endorsement. It was hypothesized that trait rumination would be significantly related to dangerous driving behaviors a

The relationship between rumination, PTSD, and depression symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are highly comorbid (Elhai et al., 2008. J. Clin. Psychiatry, 69, (4), 597-602). Rumination is a cognitive mechanism found to exacerbate and maintain both PTSD and MDD (Elwood et al., 2009. Clin. Psychol. Rev. 29, (1), 87-100; Olatunji et al., 2013. Clin. Psychol.: Sci. Pract. 20, (3), 225-257). AIMS: Assess whether four rumination subtypes moderate the relationship between comorbid PTSD and MDD symptoms. Rumination, Entrapment and Suicide Ideation: A Mediational Model.

UNLABELLED: Rumination has been shown to be positively associated with suicide ideation. Yet, only few studies have attempted to explain potential mediators of this association. Perceptions of entrapment are a core component of recent psychological models of suicidality and might mediate the relationship between rumination and suicide ideation. Possible mediator effects were investigated in an online sample (n = 142) and a clinical sample (n = 226) of adults receiving outpatient psychotherapy. Results demonstrated that perceptions of entrapment fully mediated the association between ruminative

Rumination syndrome: a review of current concepts and treatments.

Rumination is a normal and common phenomenon among ruminant animals; but in humans, it is always regarded as symptom indicative of abnormal function of the upper gastrointestinal tract, and understanding of the mechanisms explaining this event are still evolving. Learning-based theories, organic factors such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and psychological disturbances (eg, depression, anxiety) and the role of life stresses have been postulated as potential mechanisms of rumination. In this review, we take the approach that rumination syndrome is a distinct and discrete functional gastrodu

An observational study of co-rumination in adolescent friendships.

Co-rumination is a dyadic process between relationship partners that refers to excessively discussing problems, rehashing problems, speculating about problems, mutual encouragement of problem talk, and dwelling on negative affect. Although studies have addressed youths' tendency to co-ruminate, little is known about the nature of co-ruminative conversations. The primary goal of the present study (N = 314 adolescent friend dyads) was to identify microsocial processes that sustain and reinforce problem talk among adolescent co-ruminating friends. Results indicated that co-rumination was characte
