Unable to Switch Off: Fear of Missing Out, Affective Rumination, and Psychological Detachment from Work.

The expansion of digital connectivity has reshaped contemporary work environments, increasing flexibility while simultaneously blurring the boundaries between work and personal life. In such contexts, employees may experience difficulties in psychologically detaching from work during off-job time. Drawing on the Effort-Recovery model and Conservation of Resources theory, this study examined whether affective work-related rumination indirectly explained the association between Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and psychological detachment. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 228 employees from

The relationship between metacognition, anger, and pain intensity among fibromyalgia patients: a serial mediation model.

Fibromyalgia is a burdensome pain causing patients a very negative emotional state that can worsen their clinical profile, perceived disability, and treatment outcomes. In particular, anger can negatively affect pain and patient adjustment to the disease. Recent studies suggest that metacognitions and anger rumination can negatively affect anger, which in turn can amplify the intensity of pain. This study aims to investigate whether anger rumination and state anger serially mediate the relationship between metacognitions and the intensity of pain. The study included 446 subjects who: declared

A meta-analysis of the association between event-related rumination and posttraumatic growth: The Event-Related Rumination Inventory and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory.

Trauma can disrupt an individual's core beliefs about themselves, others, and the world. Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is thought to be the outcome of a reconstruction process involving ruminative processing. This meta-analysis examined the strength of the associations between event-related intrusive and deliberate rumination and PTG. The moderating effects of variables including age, time since trauma exposure, and trauma type were examined. Eight databases were searched for English-language, peer reviewed studies examining the associations between PTG and types of event-related rumination in ad

Effects of induced rumination and distraction on mood and overgeneral autobiographical memory in adolescent Major Depressive Disorder and controls.

BACKGROUND: In adults there is evidence that the affective-cognitive processes of rumination and overgeneral autobiographical memory retrieval may play a part in maintaining depression. This study investigated the effects of induced rumination as compared to distraction on mood and categoric overgeneral memory in adolescents with first episode Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and the specificity of any effects to MDD. METHOD: Three subject groups; adolescents with first episode MDD (N = 75), non-depressed psychiatric participants (N = 26) and community controls (N = 33) were recruited. An exp

"Family shame should not be made public": witnessing parental intimate partner violence and depressive symptom among Chinese college students -- the mediating role of brooding and the moderating role of resilience.

BACKGROUND: While Western research has consistently linked witnessing parental intimate partner violence (IPV) to elevated risks of depressive symptom among adolescents and young adults, the cognitive-emotional mechanisms underlying this association remain insufficiently understood within the Chinese cultural context. Witnessing parental IPV may represent not only a family-based traumatic experience but also a process through which enduring cognitive vulnerabilities become internalized within sociocultural environments. Although such culturally embedded schema-related vulnerabilities are not d

Rumination in the laboratory: what happens when you go back to everyday life?

Rumination has been suggested to mediate the physiological consequences of stress on health. We studied the effects of rumination evoked in the laboratory and subsequent changes over 24 h. Heart rate (HR) and systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP) were monitored in 27 male and 33 female participants during baseline, reading, an anger recall interview, and recovery. Half of the sample was assigned to a distraction condition. The lab session was followed by a 24-hour ambulatory (A)HR and BP recording and self-reports of moods and rumination. Rumination was associated with higher SBP, D

Long-term efficacy of metacognitive therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy for depression.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the two-year outcomes for depression, anxiety, cognitive and global social functioning after cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and metacognitive therapy (MCT) for depression. METHOD: Participants were 31 adults with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder in a randomised pilot study comparing MCT and CBT. Therapy modality differences in change in depression and anxiety symptoms, dysfunctional attitudes, metacognitions, rumination, worry and global social functioning were examined at the two-year follow-up for those who completed therapy. RESULTS: Significant improvem

Low working memory capacity in euthymic bipolar I disorder: No relation to reappraisal on emotion regulation.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation (ER) applies behavioral and cognitive strategies to modify the appearance and intensity of emotions. Working memory capacity (WMC) plays an important role in the ER process, particularly through its influence on the efficiency of ER strategies. METHODS: We investigated interactions between WMC and three ER strategies, namely cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression, and rumination, in 43 euthymic patients with bipolar I disorder and 48 healthy control subjects. We used the Korean versions of the Operation Span Task, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, Ruminat

Neural propensity for trait rumination in adolescents: A cross-sectional study with Voxel-Based Morphometry.

Rumination is a transdiagnostic risk factor among adolescents for developing psychopathology. Despite prior research on the neuroscience of rumination in adults, more research is needed regarding the underlying structural neural correlates associated with adolescent rumination. This study analyzed the neural correlates of trait rumination among adolescents (N = 95) using Voxel-Based Morphometry. We found higher trait rumination was associated with lower gray matter density in the left orbitofrontal cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, dorsolateral prefrontal gyrus, and bilateral temporal gyrus, whi

Unique contributions of metacognition and cognition to depressive symptoms.

This study attempts to examine the unique contributions of "cognitions" or "metacognitions" to depressive symptoms while controlling for their intercorrelations and comorbid anxiety. Two-hundred-and-fifty-one university students participated in the study. Two complementary hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed, in which symptoms of depression were regressed on the dysfunctional attitudes (DAS-24 subscales) and metacognition scales (Negative Beliefs about Rumination Scale [NBRS] and Positive Beliefs about Rumination Scale [PBRS]). Results showed that both NBRS and PBRS indivi

Gender related correlates of posttraumatic stress symptoms in a World Trade Center tragedy sample.

Previous research has documented that women are more susceptible to developing posttraumatic stress disorder than men. This study examines the relationships between gender, ruminative coping, traditional gender role characteristics, trauma-related cognitions, and posttraumatic stress symptoms. Participants were 123 victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, including 72 males and 51 females. Results indicated that female victims had more posttraumatic stress symptoms than male victims. Ruminative coping was positively correlated with posttraumatic stress symptoms. Victims who were c

Preoccupation as psychopathological process and symptom in adjustment disorder: A scoping review.

In the ICD-11 diagnostic guidelines, preoccupation has been introduced as the new core symptom of adjustment disorder. Despite this essential innovation, preoccupation has so far largely been defined as rumination and worry and does not feature a distinct character as an independent symptom. In order to investigate the nature of preoccupation, various cognitive approaches are evaluated and linked to preoccupation. Furthermore, the aim of this review is to define preoccupation more precisely and to distinguish it from other symptoms in psychopathology. The evaluation of key features of cognitiv

Aversive distractors modulate affective working memory in frontoparietal regions.

Rumination and worry are prominent symptoms of many psychiatric disorders. These symptoms compete for the same working memory (WM) storage space as those required for task-goals, leaving few cognitive resources available for successful goal-directed behavior. Once lodged in WM, negative information reduces cognitive control and further biases cognition toward affective stimuli. However, few studies have examined the neural mechanisms associated with maintaining affectively negative information in WM and the filtering of aversive distractors. Here, subjects completed an affective verbal WM task

Trauma or growth after a natural disaster? The mediating role of rumination processes.

The aim of this study was to test a cognitive model of posttraumatic symptoms (PTS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG) after exposure to a natural disaster. It was hypothesized that although subjective severity of trauma would be related to the severity of PTS, this relation would be mediated by brooding and cognitive strategies related to the presence of repetitive negative content in thoughts. Furthermore, the relation between severity and PTG would be fully mediated by deliberate rumination (DR), cognitive strategies related to conscious efforts focused on handling the event. To evaluate the co

Selective attention deficits in obsessive-compulsive disorder: the role of metacognitive processes.

While initial studies supported the hypothesis that cognitive characteristics that capture cognitive resources act as underlying mechanisms in memory deficits in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the influence of those characteristics on selective attention has not been studied, yet. In this study, we examined the influence of cognitive self-consciousness (CSC), rumination and worrying on performance in selective attention in OCD and compared the results to a depressive and a healthy control group. We found that 36 OCD and 36 depressive participants were impaired in selective attention in c

Work Stress, Work-Related Rumination, and Depressive Symptoms in University Teachers: Buffering Effect of Self-Compassion.

PURPOSE: The association between work stress and depressive symptoms has been well documented. More research is still needed to further investigate the underlying explanatory process mechanism and the potential protective function of personal resource in attenuating the negative effect of work stress on mental health. To address this gap and informed by the stress process model and emotion regulation theory, the present study examined the indirect role of work-related rumination and the buffering effect of self-compassion in university teachers, a population with increased vulnerabilities for b

Cognitive factors in the development, maintenance, and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Cognitive content and processes are central to theories of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this paper, we highlight recent findings on cognitive factors in PTSD. Evidence for the role of negative post-traumatic cognitions in PTSD has continued to mount, with cognitions mediating PTSD symptoms and predicting PTSD over and above other key variables. Researchers have also continued to implicate cognitive processes like rumination in the development and maintenance of PTSD. Finally, we review how cognitive-behavioral therapies interrupt dysfunctional cognitive processes in PTSD and highl

Prediction of pre-exam state anxiety from ruminative disposition: The mediating role of impaired attentional disengagement from negative information.

Rumination is a maladaptive form of repetitive thinking that enhances stress responses, and heightened disposition to engage in rumination may contribute to the onset and persistence of stress-related symptoms. However, the cognitive mechanisms through which ruminative disposition influences stress reactivity are not yet fully understood. This study investigated the hypothesis that the impact of ruminative disposition on stress reactivity is carried by an attentional bias reflecting impaired attentional disengagement from negative information. We examined the capacity of a measure of ruminativ

Novelty-seeking, fantasy, and sensitization in chronic insomniacs.

13 chronic primary insomniacs and a matched group of normal sleepers were studied in terms of their level of novelty-seeking, ability to fantasize, and cognitive rumination. All-night electroencephalographic patterns confirmed insomniac-control sleep differences. Chronic insomniacs differed from normal sleepers on a measure of cognitive activity as a defense pattern (Byrne's Repression-Sensitization Scale) but did not differ on measures of need for cognitive stimulation (Pearson's Internal and External Cognition Scales), ability to fantasize (Betts' imagery task), or preference for fantasy (Pe
