Changes in the brain's cholinergic receptor systems underlie several neuropsychiatric disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, schizophreni … inistered the muscarinic and nicotinic cholinergic agonist physostigmine, the muscarinic antagonist scopolamine, and saline. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) after each infusion was determined using single photon emission-computed tomography. Both cholinergic probes induced rCBF changes (p<0.005) in relatively distinct, cholinergic-rich, limbic brain regio …

In the case of a combination of urge incontinence and stress incontinence, operative therapy is not successful without previous treatment. In 73% (58/82) of patients treated with 20 mg Butylscopolamine, a significant lowering of the absolute pressure volume values and a significant elevation of bladder capacity could be demonstrated.

On oral administration, Ginkgo biloba phytosomes significantly reduced pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time, produced an alteration in the general behaviour pattern, increased spontaneous motility and inhibited the chlorpromazine-induced blockade of conditioned and unconditioned responses in rodents. They exhibited both antiamnestic and antidepressant activities in the scopolamine-induced amnesia test and behavioural despair test, respectively. However, the phytosomes failed to show anticonvulsant activity. The observations suggest that the G. biloba phytosomes possess moderate antiamnestic/no…

In the present paper, effects of scopolia drugs (scopolamine, anisodine, anisodamine) on experimental gastric mucosal lesion models in rats were investigated. Scopolia drugs were found to be effective anti-ulcer agents in three experimental gastric ulcer models (i.e. cold-restraint stress induced ulcer, indomethacin induced ulcer and acetic acid induced chronic ulcer) in rats in a dose dependent manner. Biochemical analysis of gastric juice and blood showed that scopolia drugs could inhibit gastric acid secretion and pepsin activity, increase gastric barrier mucus and concentration of serum ga…

1. At 37 degrees C in 0.1 M NaCl the pKa of hyoscine (10 mM) is 7.53; the non-protonated form has about one-tenth of the affinity (log K = 8.58) of the protonated form (log K = 9.58) for muscarine-sensitive receptors of the guinea-pig ileum at 37 degrees C. 2. In the same conditions the pKa of hyoscine N-oxide is 5.78 and the non-protonated form is inactive on the ileum whereas the protonated form is highly active with log K estimated to be 9.9, at least as active as hyoscine methobromide (log K = 9.85). 3. Hyoscine methobromide appears to occupy less space in water than atropine methobromide;

A case report is given of a 22-years old student (whose brother had Alport's syndrome) with recurrent central corneal swelling and paracentral erosions of the cornea of both eyes. Further signs of beginning Alport's syndrome in this case are disturbance of re-adaptation after dazzling (Mesoptometer) and paracentral scotomata in the visual fields. Remarkable was the small diameter of the disc in both eyes (1.37 mm). Local therapy was Scopolamin-eye-drops, Actihaemyl- and especially Cystein-Gel (2.4%).

Two technics (chronic electrodes-electrointraperitoneography : EIG) have been used simultaneously in the conscious dog for the pharmacological study of drug effects on the electrical activity of intestine. The results show a good correlation between records obtained with the technic which needs a surgical operation (chronic electrodes) and the other which doesn't (EIG). The expected effects of the parasympathomimetic (acetylcholine-neostigmine) parasympatholytic (scopolamine) and adrenergic (epinephrine-neosynephrine) drugs used on the spiking activity are obtained with the two technics.

Sea sickness was first described in 1881, and since then the syndrome has been described to be associated with travelling also in other means of transportation. Symptoms of motion sickness are quite common in otherwise healthy people. The symptoms are usually of short duration and last for not longer than three days. Children of 2 to 12 years are most susceptible. Women are more susceptible than men to motion sickness. Predisposing factors include menstruation and pregnancy. Scopolamine and antihistamines are used for prevention of motion sickness.

In the rat, the antimuscarinics atropine and scopolamine failed to block the reduction in pentobarbital-induced sleep time produced by either thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) or MK-771 (a TRH analog). Previous reports have indicated that the marked analeptic effect produced by TRH is antagonized by such agents. It is not clear at this time whether the difference between our findings and these previous studies indicates a reduced sensitivity of cholinergic receptors in the rat to muscarinic blockade, a different neurochemical mechanism of action of TRH in the rat, or other unknown factors.

A 59-year-old male patient with congenital central cataract was treated for 24 years with atropine, scopolamine, and thyramine hydrochloride eye drops to achieve a permanent mydriasis for optical reasons. He developed a peculiar secondary pigment dispersion syndrome, which is interpreted as a complication of the excessive pupillary excursion on the anterior lens surface following iatrogenic mydriasis. This may be differentiated from the idiopathic and other more common types of secondary pigment dispersion syndrome, mainly by the location of the defects in the pigment epithelium of the iris.
